Santa Ana Bride Killed in Ridge Route Accident
En route from Seattle to Santa Ana to visit her family. Karen Volf Fairbanks, 16, bride of four months, was killed last night in a traffic crash on the Ridge route, between Bakersfield and Los Angeles. Her husband, Ross Fairbanks, a sailor, is in a critical condition in Newhall hospital.
The girl, a Santa Ana high school junior when she eloped to Yuma with Fairbanks last Dec. 23, was a daughter of Mrs. Erna Volf, 917 Kilson drive, Santa Ana, and Christian Volf, a physicist, now living in Denmark.
She also leaves a brother, Rex, 19, Army paratrooper, who leaves next week for service in Korea, and a sister, Werdandi Volf, 21, of Santa Ana. Werdandi is complainant in a bogus check charge against Edward G. Robinson Jr., 19, son of the actor, who is now awaiting trial. He has given him a "hospitality" check after staying over night and having breakfast with the Volf family last Feb. 3.
The accident last night took place a half-mile north of Oak Flat, on the Ridge route. A car bulging registration of voters in more than a score of Orange county election precincts will require an innovation, double election boards, in 23 or 24 precincts, for the June 3 primary, County Clerk B. J. Smith announced today.
Lack of time in which to make changes in precinct boundary lines forced the move to name two election boards in those precincts where the registration has surged upward, Smith said.
Only one new precinct has been created for the primary, and another precinct has been eliminated, so the total for the county remains the same, said the clerk.
The old West Orange precinct was the one eliminated, due to changes in boundary lines between the 74th and 75th assembly districts made by the 1951 session of the legislature. The new boundary line, following the Santa Ana river channel, split West Orange precinct. The section west of the river was joined to Katella precinct No. 3, the new precinct. A small segment along the river, south of Ball road, went into Katella No. 3. The portion of old West Orange precinct east of the river, just north of Santa Ana, was added to McPherson precinct. The section north of Chapman ave. was joined with St. James precinct.
A small wedge of territory between Santa Ana and the river has been transferred from the Second supervisorial district to the Fifth district, and from Newhope precinct to Diamond precinct.
New precincts will be created by dividing the largest precincts after the June primary election is out of the way, Smith said.

Taxes Due Today,
Collector Warns
Taxes for the fiscal year 1952 must be paid by 5 p.m. too or be declared delinquent. County Tax Collector Don Mozz warned.
The legal deadline of April was extended one day because that date fell upon Sunday.
The tax collector's office rushed all day today, and many brought sacks of checks to pile on the growing heap in office. Mail payments, even though reaching his office pled the deadline, would be accepted without penalty if they be an April 21 postmark, said Miley.

The accident last night took place a half-mile north of Oak Flat, on the Ridge route. A car drfven by Fairbanks struck the rear end of a lumber truck. Fairbanks suffered a broken leg and broken arm. A sailor hitch hiker in the car also was injured.
Another car then crashed into the wreckage, injuring the driver.
County Planners Reverse Two City Bodies on Permits
Running contrary to action by both the Anaheim and Fullerton planning commissions, the Orange County planning commission last Friday disapproved applications of two machine shops for permits to locate near Orangethorpe and Raymond aves... close to the Northrop Aviation Co. plant near Anaheim.
Protests from 20 individuals were filed with the planners against the application of Herbst Bros. who operate an iron works and machine shop at 606 S. Spadra rd., Fullerton, and E. Carrell, who planned an electric motor shop alongside the proposed Herbst Bros. location. The Herbst concern had thought to move because Fullerton planners imposed "too many" restrictions on their business when they sought to enlarge.

Sam Collins to Support Own Bill On Crossfiling on TV Tomorrow
Whether to eliminate cross-filing in primary elections completely, or adopt an alternative proposed in a bill sponsored by Speaker Sam L. Colling of the State Aseembly, which would require any candidate cross-filing to state his own party affiliation on the other party's ballot, will be debated on television Tuesday evening at 8:30.
Speaker Collins himself, with an associate, will defend his proposal, which will appear on the ballot next November, with the proposal to bar cross-filing entirely. The debate will be held on Los Angeles Station KNTX, Channel 2.
The Collins proposal, AB1018, would require that the party affiliation of any candidate cross-filing, must appear following his name on the primary ballot.
Thus, Collins himself, seeking his own party (Republican) nomination for the State Senate from Orange county this year, and also cross-filing for the Democratic nomination, would be required to insert on the Democratic ballot the word "Republican" after his name, were his proposal now a law.
Collins contends that his proposal would eliminate the objec-tion raised by interests seeking bar cross-filing entirely. The opp-nents of cross-filing contend that voters in any party primary do not aware that candidates whose names appear on their party ballot may not be actually members of their party. Thus they vote candidates under a misapprehension.
If the candidate is required to state his party affiliation in cross-filing, that objection is removed said Collins, and any candidate whom the voters of both parties may wish to support can give voters such opportunity by cross-filing in the primary.
Speaker Collins and Geraldine Hadsell, minute clerk of the Assembly, who also is legislator chairman for the California Business and Professional Women clubs, president of Republican Women, and a director Los Angeles Ebell club, will advocate that Collins proposal on the television debate Tuesday evening. Favoring the complete elimination of cross-filing will be H. O. Van Petten and Mrs. Elizabeth Snyder of the League of Women Voters.

Prison Wardens Tighten Up Due to Epidemic of Riots
By The Associated Press
Prison officials in many parts of the country were watchful for signs of unrest today as the third major prison rebellion in a week flared in Michigan.
However, some prisons were taking no special precautions.
With rioting convicts in control of a large section of the Southern Michigan state prison at Jackson, and 231 hard-bitten criminals revolting at New Jersey's state prison at Rahway, federal prison director James V. Bennett said in Washington:
"Realizing that situations of this kind are contagious, we are naturally taking every precaution."
He declined to specify what these measures are.
At Atlanta penitentiary in Georgia, however, Warden W. H. Hiatt said no special precautions were being taken now, but "we are always on the lookout and try to be prepared for any emergency."
At the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kas., Warden Walter Hunter said, "we're always on the alert for those things here," but "we've had no indications of trouble."
He added, in reference to midwestern floods: "all we've got is a lot of high water and that's bad enough."
Warden Ewin Swope of Alcatraz federal prison in San Francisco bay said no extraordinary precautions were being taken on the maximum-security "rock."
While the average penitentiary can tighten up its rules in times of stress, he said, "things here are always as tight as we can make them."
Ohio penitentiary and prison officials said no special safeguards were being employed, and that inmates knew of the current riots from newspapers and radio which are not being censored.
At the Michigan prison, some of the institution's toughest criminals grabbed four guards as hostages and took over the mess hall and other prison sections in a right boat were kept at hand the work was done

Some 1600 men sloughed through mud in a chilly rain, bolstering a three-mile stretch of dikes against the tremendous river pressure.
It was a dangerous hand-to-hand struggle.
Flood waters behind the dikes stood as much as nine feet above the level of the air field. Lifeboats were kept at hand. Most of the work was done without aid of machine. The field was too soggy for trucks.
Fort Leavenworth is about 25 miles northwest of Kansas City. The critical area along the flooding Missouri is now between St. Joseph, Mo., and Kansas City.
If the dike at the north end of Sherman field gives way, the water probably will cut a new river channel across the field leaving part of it an island, flood fighters reported.
The around-the-clock activity was carried on at night under strings of lights.
"It looks like a beach operation in New Guinea," an observer sai. "We've got the water and the beehive activity. About all we lack is the mosquitoes."
The flood fighters even included instructors at the Army's Command and General Staff school at Fort Leavenworth.
While the army fought the Sherman field battle, tricky Missouri valley weather posed new problems on 700 miles of the flooding

Officials Probe Airplane Crash Near Whittier
LOS ANGELES (AP)—While deputy coroners continued their grisly task of attempting to complete identification of 29 plane crash victim, aviation experts today tried to determine cause of Friday's airliner disaster.
Ralph Reed, Deputy Chief of the Civil Aeronautics board, and his assistants are rechecking parts of the smashed C-46 non-scheduled North Continent Airlines plane.
Later a public hearing on the crash will be held.
Reed said he didn't give much weight to a possible heart attack of the pilot as a crash cause. He said it was logical the co-pilot would take over if the pilot were stricken.
Saturday, a county autopsy sargeon said he found post mortem evidence that the dead pilot, Lewis Powell, 44, of La Crescenta, suffered from heart disease.
The coroner's office said 28 bodies and parts of a 29th have been recovered. Twenty-one have been identified. Coroner's officials continue their efforts today to identify the other eight.

While the army fought the Sherman field battle, tricky Missouri valley weather posed new problems on 700 miles of the flooding river.
What worried the flood fighters was the question: how much will it rain? And where?
All the experts would say was that a chance of heavy rain exists. But they couldn't tell yet whether it would hit the Missouri basin, especially the overloaded area from St. Joseph, Mo., to Kansas City.
Even if it rained a full inch in the Kaw (Kansas) basin, they said, it would raise the Missouri at Kansas City only about a foot. That would still be well below the level the protecting dikes were built to stand.
