Record Slate of Candidates Set To Woo California Constituents
By MORRIE LANDSBERG
SACRAMENTO (P)—California gets to elect seven additional Congressmen this year, and a record batch of candidates will scramble for the new total of 20 seats.
The official list of candidates released today by Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan shows:
A total of 186 will compete for party nominations for the House of Representatives in the June 9 primary.
Five others are seeking the one place in the U.S. Senate that's up for election. They are Republicans: William P. Knowland, the incumbent; and Robert D. Adams, South Gate; Democrats: Rep. Clinton D. McKinnon, San Diego, and Arthur W. Watwood, Compton, and Independent Progressive: Reuben W. Borough, Los Angeles.
Californians also will vote on four slates of national convention delegates in the presidential race, and on 100 of the 120 seats in the state legislature.
The primary will provide the first practical test of Democratic complaints that the predominantly Republican legislature reapportioned the Congressional districts last year to carve out "safe" GOP districts.
California was awarded seven more Representatives on the basis of it population growth since the 1950 census.
Of the 23 present incumbents in Congress, all but two are true Rep. Jack Shelley, Francisco Democrat, has no position.
In contrast, there are 11 candidates from the new 23rd district in Los Angeles county (S Gate, Huntington Park, Lynn Comptop). Voters there actually will find 24 names on their ballot because of cross-fillings.
San Mateo county has the chic among five candidates for its 9th district. There are six in field in Contra Costa, which got its own district under the apportionment program.
The candidates from the district are David Farrell, James B. Utt (R), both of San Ana; Oscar E. Knappe (R), condido; Frank M. Linnell, Newport Beach; John A. Stee (R), Oceanside; Lionel Van Dillin (D), Poway.
