For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... Speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee... Job. 12:8. BACKGLANCES—A year ago three people—Earnest Weaver, 58, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beaumont, 69 and 55, met death in a Westminster crash. The traffic toll was 22... The stork did business with three Anaheim families leaving pinup gals at the Rudy Tavam and Joseph Johnson; the David Macrenders and the John Jacksons welcomed wee heirs... That was a year ago. Remember? SHOESTRING STRIP—In the welter of headline news, you may have missed a mighty enlightening article last week. A pact establishing a boundary line between Fullerton and Anaheim was approved to eliminate possible future territorial disputes between the neighboring municipalities. The resolution establishes Houston avenue as a "permanent" east-west boundary the two cities. No agreement was reached on a boundary between 15 Lose Lives In Crash of B-36 Bomber SPOKANE, Wash. (P)—A giant, 10-engine B-36 bomber faltered and fell on takeoff at Fairchild Air Force base early today, killing 15 of the 17 then aboard. The huge craft, world's largest bomber, crashed through a fence at the end of the runway and burst into flames in a farmer's wheat field, leaving bits of wreckage in its wake. Somehow two men survived. They were very seriously burned and suffering from shock. They were unable to speak to investigators. The B-36 hit with terrific force and pieces fell off as it bounced along the ground. It stopped in the edge of farmer Ernest Alf's wheat field and burned fiercely. "We were awakened by this awful crash and as we got out of bed all we could see was a big fire," Alf said. Fire trucks from the nearby community of Medical Lake raced across the wheat land to fight the flames. "The CRASH made an awful explosion," Alf said. "It lit up the room like it was daylight." It looked like it was daylight. ANNOUNCEMENTS Cemetery LOMA VISTA MEMORIAL PARK Fullerton, California A pact establishing a boundary line between Fullerton and Anaheim was approved to eliminate possible future territorial disputes between the neighboring municipalities. The resolution establishes Houston avenue as a "permanent" east-west boundary the two cities. No agreement was reached on a boundary between the cities west of South Spadra road. Credit for bringing about the boundary-line agreement between the two cities goes to Robert L. Clark, landowner on the Anaheim side of the border in the county territory. It was his efforts that got representatives of the two cities together to work out a pact which would be mutually satisfactory to both expanding municipalities. Mayor Charles Pearson of Anaheim and Mayor Thomas Eadington of Fullerton; City Administrator Keith Murdoch; Fullerton City Engineer Herman Hiltscher; James Graves, superintendent of the Orangethorpe school district; Hugh Ellis; Lou Fuhrman of the U.S. Electrical Motors; Fred Schell; Edison company manager, and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Phelps took part in the proceedings. Once the boundary is finally adopted, the two municipalities can begin to develop the land of the county territory which has so long been regarded as a "no man's land." SUGGESTION — It was Max Besler who first suggested that the two cities—Fullerton and Anaheim—should sit down at a conference table and work out a solution to the complex territorial squabbles that date back almost to the time George and Edward Amerige staked out their subdivision north of Anaheim in 1887. In this Gazette editorial Besler suggested that the intense, though foolish rivalry, should be forgotten and the issue settled fairly and equitably to all parties concerned. Apparently, Bob Clark thought he had something awful crash and as we got out of bed all we could see was a big fire," Alf said. Fire trucks from the nearby community of Medical Lake raced across the wheat land to fight the flames. "The CRASH made an awful explosion," Alf said. "It lit up the room like it was daylight. It looked like it was only a block away but it was a half mile." The B-36 with its huge swept-back wing was virtually a shell in minutes. "It was flat in a little while," Alf said. The 3½ million dollar bomber was taking off on a routine training flight from Fairchild, some 10 miles west of here. there. Instead of waiting for someone else to do something about it, he acted and his initiative has been fruitful. He got the ball rolling. EXPANSION — In the 1920's Anaheim pushed its city limits to Orangethorpe where the Anaheim Northrop Division plant is now located. Since then there has been considerable agitation to make Orangethorpe the dividing line between the two cities. It was Henry Meiser, the rancher, who thwarted Anaheim's shoe-string annexation plans. After long, drawn out court litigation which was taken to the State Supreme court by City Attorney Preston Turner, the Fullerton City limits were planted on Anaheim's doorstep as it were. BOOSTER—Unlike many home-town newspapers, the Gazette editorials are primarily concerned with the problems facing Anaheim and Anaheimers. Anaheimers are immediately concerned with the events and problems in their own back yard, consequently they have won the admiration and respect of Gazette-readers. NITECAPSULE—You will win if you can afford to lose. White House Says President Didn't Say 'No' to Tidelands Measure WASHINGTON — The White House says a caller misquoted President Truman in telling newsmen the president planned to veto a pending bill giving the states title to submerged coastal lands. I. A. Smoot, a former Salt Lake City postmaster, told reporters on leaving the White House yesterday that Truman had informed him the measure would be rejected. Press Secretary Joseph Short called newsmen together five hours later and told them Smoot had "misquoted the president." The Senate and House have passed measures giving the states title to the oil-rich coastal lands but the bills are before a conference committee to reconcile differences. Truman vetoed a similar bill in 1946 and Congress failed to override the veto. At that time, the issue was before the Supreme court, which later held the federal government has prior rights over the land: California, Texas and Louisiana are the states primarily concerned. Smoot has pending an application to lease lands off Long Beach Calif. He told newsmen that Truman informed him he would direct Secretary of the Interior Chapman to grant the leases which Smoot and others have filed. Short told reporters: "First, the president did not tell Mr. Smoot the pending tidelands oil bill will be vetoed. That legislation has not reached the president for signature and the president reserves comment thereon at this time. "Secondly, the president did not tell Mr. Smoot that he would order the Secretary of the Interior to issue federal tidelands oil leases. "Mr. Smoot urged the president to do both these things, but received no commitments on either request." Smoot, reported en route to Salt Lake City, was not reached for comment.
