Extravagant Living Said to Cause Resilience
WASHINGTON (UP)—Irate Spectators aimed an axe today at plum living quarters, free servants, clerical trains, and other luxuries in U.S. military personnel in overseas posts.
If the Pentagon fails to curb "luxury living" by U. S. occupation forces in Germany, Senator O'Mahoney (D-Wyo) told a porter, Congress will find a way to do it.
O'Mahoney is presiding at closed-door Senate hearings on multi-billion dollar annual defense money bill. He said he probably will offer an amendment call for an end to free servants or special trains to recreation centers for U. S. military forces in Germany.
Two Republican members of the purse-string committee, Ferguson of Michigan and Young of North Dakota, said in separate interviews they will support O'Mahoney.

American taxpayers are the costs for all these clienemployees of the military many and elsewhere either directly or indirectly," Young said.
Young said the Pentagon informed him that 17,200 German servants "or quarters attendants" were being used by the military last October 31 at an average pay of $37.50 a month.
"That's some $600,000 a month or six million a year," he said.
Young said he learned the armforces in Japan had hired women secretaries in Australia and suppled them with free Japanese maids, quarters and transportation to and from Japan. He said free servants for both military and civilian workers in Japan ended last July 1.
Ferguson said extravagant living in occupied countries "by our representatives is bad public relations" and "it also tends to soften up our armed forces."
SENATOR DOUGLAS (D-III) said the "high living of military personnel abroad, particularly in occupied countries, not only is a source of great expense but produces resentment and hatred."
"If Germany was not using her funds for this, we would be required to supply much less for occupation costs," he said.

SENATOR DOUGLAS (D-Ill) said the "high living of military personnel abroad, particularly in occupied countries, not only is a source of great expense but produces resentment and hatred."
"If Germany was not using her funds for this, we would be required to supply much less for occupation costs," he said.
Douglas lost a recent effort to get the Senate to cut in half the special overseas allowances for all military personnel, especially military attaches.
All four Senators expressed surprise at a report by Chauncey G. Parker, retiring Assistant U.S. High Commissioner for Germany, that the Army refused to give up free servants, special trains and other luxury items in Germany.
"And we don't want to fool ourselves that the Germans are paying for these things in the last instance," Parker was quoted in an interview from Bonn, Germany. "It's the old U.S. taxpayer holding the bag in terms of aid and other things that come over to Germany."
Parker said that U.S. civilians no longer had free German servants, and British officials in Germany had withdrawn all special and private trains for their military and civilian personnel.
He said Germans, urged to raise 400,000 troops for western defense, have asked the U.S. Army to eliminate the occupation luxuries but Army officials declined to comment.

In the morning worship service Sunday, Pastor Bob Kevorkian will speak on "A foundation in the Christian Life." The resurrection of Jesus Christ gives us a tremendous hope for eternity. However, there is a foundation necessary within our Christian Church which is necessary for a growing and productive effort for Christ.

Their first task will be to nurse sick pygmies brought to the mission hospitals in order to learn their languages. They will later move to their base camp in the jungle and visit the small settlements of pygmies.
