New personnel has been added to the Riverside staff to continue and extend the smog investigations carried on for several years in the Plant Pathology division, said Dr. Alfred M. Boyce, director of the Citrus Experiment station.
He has named an Air Pollution Research committee, headed by Dr. John T. Middleton, associate plant pathologist, who has led the research into smog injury to truck and field crops. On the committee are Dr. Homer D. Chapman, chairman of the Division of Soils and Plant Nutrition; Dr. Walton B. Sinclair, chairman of the Division of Plant Physiology, and Dr. Sterling J. Richards, associate irrigation engineer. The Agricultural Extension Service will continue to cooperate in the program.
The study, it was explained by Dr. Chapman, will require among other things, carefully controlled plant culture work with citrus and other plants over a considerable time.
As a preliminary, he said, citrus leaf samples collected from the coastal plain to as far inland as Banning, in San Gorgonio pass, were analyzed in the experiment station laboratories. These analyses, Dr. Chapman said, have shown an elevated fluorine content in the foliage from citrus trees in some areas, but careful, long-term research will be required to learn how far from the sources and to what extent this air constituent will affect citrus growth and production.
