Thursday Thoughts ... Bob Kelley, the LA sportscaster whose personal "war" with the metropolitan sports writers was described in one of our columns recently, is at it again... He says the scribes were out of line in protecting 18 loudly that Luino Salas should have got the decision over Jimmy Carter Tuesday night... Those who know him know that Kelley would never be happy unless he had something to raid about... Jess Hill says at SC that Jim Sears, Al Carmichael, and Addison Hawthorne are all even" at the conclusion of spring practice. In the battle for the Trojan tailback spot for next hall... Thousands more fans will watch Troy next fall if Hawthorne wins the first-striping job, because a Negro on the SC varsity will be such a rarity... It hasn't happened in 25—count them—25 years... It looks like Jim Crow is being driven off the campus but good at our alma mater, and we say, "it's about time."... The most amusing statement to us these days is the one lying made to the effect that the Pacific Coast league is no longer a minor league, how that it has its "open" classification... Let's be realistic men... Merely changing the name of a product does not change its contents, and the loop is still cluttered with tired old men and untried rookies.
What Do You Know? Old Bobo Newsom Is Back Again with the Washington By RALPH EOBEN
Associated Press Sports Writer
Old Bobo Newsom is back.
Newsom, who claims he has spent more years in Washington than any other man with the exception of the late president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, has signed for his fifth hitch with the Senators.
Baseball's famous nomad, who owns up to 43 years of age, hooked on with the Senators as a relief pitcher yesterday.
Newsom had been working out with the Senators at Orlando, Fla., and looked pretty good.
Those few who have waived major draft rights have received terrific publicity, but the great majority of players in the PCL would still much rather be in the majors, despite the less pleasant climates Eastwards... The man on the street has only to walk a few blocks on Thursday or Saturday mornings to become aware of the tremendous popularity of nationally-burned TV lights on Wednesday and Friday nights... They're the talk of the town everywhere... Biggest favor the beer company sponsors of the Wednesday cards could do the video audiences and themselves would be to work out arrangements for "live" lights every week, rather than every other week...
Folks are getting awfully tired of two-week old bouts on film in which they already know who the winner is and how he won... If Washington can induce Cleveland to part with Bob Chakalese for Mickey Harris as rumored, the "Old Fox" of baseball, Senator President Clark Griffith, will have put over one of his silkest deals.
Chakalese is a fast-developing youngster with a world of promise, while Harris is a tired oldster.
Also, Chakalese is a "spot" starter to throw in when the big Cleveland aces. Feller et al. have been overworked, while Harris is a reliever, something the Tribe doesn't need with Lou Breslin.
Washington manager Harris said:
"If Bobo isn't a changed he's putting on the best team know.
"When Newsom dies, they go to cut off his right arm and it in the hall of fame at Cool town. He still has a lot of ball and I think he can help as a reliever."
Newsom hasn't graced thejor league scene since 1948 he was released by the New Giants. He won 30 games Chattanooga and 17 for Binghamton of the Southern Association the past three seasons.
In addition to the Senators Giants, Newsom has pitched the Chicago Cubs, BrookDodgers and every American League club except Cleveland Chicago.
Newsom found time in his cell to win 205 big league games Bob Feller of Cleveland is only other active major leagel with more than 200 victories.
The shopworn righthander plenty of stories. There's then he tells about the first time he shipped back to the milieu Newsom came up to the Cut 1932 when Rogers Hornsby was manager. In an early son game infielder Hornsby played right field.
"I remember there was balls hit against the right fence and Hornsby misplayed very one of them," Newsom lates.
"I never saw a guy run so many Hornsby didn't say nothing to in the clubhouse after he got but the next day I was with Ring."
With Newsom around life-the Senators shouldn't be du

Anaheim High School Baseball Team Drops Close Game to Long Beachers
After holding a two run lead for almost 11 innings, Anaheim high school's baseball squad dropped a game, 6-3, to Long Beach Wilson yesterday afternoon on Long Beach City college field.
Heavy hitter for the Colonists was shortstop Gayle Herbel, who banged out three hits, one a double, for five trips to bat. Jim Roberts drew two for four.
The Colonists scored first in the second inning, as Herrera singled. Ramella attempted to sacrifice him to second, and got on on an error himself. Lupe Gonzales then singled to take Ramella to second, and Roberts bunted to score Herrera.
In the fourth, Herbel singled. Bishop hauled up safe on first on another attempted sacrifice, and Herbel scored on a two-base wild throw.
The Wilsonites scored their first run in the fifth as one man tripled and was brought in on a single. The Colonists then extended their lead to a 5-1 in the sixth as Herbel doubled, worked his way to third and came home on a wild pitch.
In the fatal seventh inning, a Wilson batter took a base on balls and was scored on a triple to left field. A bad choice on an infield out then scored the second Wilson man to bring the game into a tie.
The eighth frame was the bonus inning for the winners. The Wilson men romped home with the game on two singles, a sacrifice or an error, and a holder's choice which scored three runs. Anaheim failed to score in the top of the ninth.
The loss was chalked up to Colonist pitcher Val Weithorn, who tossed the last two innings. Dick Ramella pitched the first six innings.

Los Angeles Takes Possession of First Place in Pacific Coast Loop
By The Associated Press
With just three games of the season written into history, the 1952 Pacific Coast league baseball Los Angeles Angels have taken over exclusive possesion of first place.
Thursday night it was Doyle Lade, a big control specialist, tossing a four-hitter for Stan Hack's leaders as they beat Sacramento, 12-2, for their third straight victory.
San Francisco dropped out of the undefeated ranks in losing 4-3 to Portland's Beavers. In the other games San Diego's rookie Willie Luna shut out Oakland 3-0 and Seattle toppled Hollywood 4-1. The same teams tangle again tonight.
Los Angeles gave Lade plenty of support and broke out in a 15-bit attack paced by catcher Les Peden's double and pair of singles. Lade helped himself to a couple of one-base blows.
Manager Joe Gordon of the Solons was banished in the seventh as he protested a fourth ball called on the Angels' Max West. Sacramento fans tossed a half dozen cushions on the diamond. Catcher Vinnie Smith also was chased and the visitors scored four runs.
AT SAN DIEGO, Luna, a Mexican left-hander who won 26 and lost 13 for Triunfa in the Class C Southwest International league last year, faced a six-hitter. Bill Ayres was the losing pitcher. Shortstop Buddy Peterson paced the Padre batting department with a pair of doubles.
Seattle moved into the second place tie with San Francisco and San Diego (both with 2-1 records) with its first win since slaughter by Old Sol, stakes the Weather Bureau.

Looks Like Big Olympic Year In California
BY WILLIAM H. ALLEN
SACRAMENTO UP—The Olympic year is starting off like a big one for California track and field athletes. A pair of husky discus throwers are leading the way.
The heavy winter rains hampered training and delayed the opening of the season for two weeks. But even so take a look at what some of the state’s trackmen have done already:
BIG SIM INESS, eligible again to compete for Southern California, marked up a new national collegiate discus record by tossing the platter 182 feet 5 inches in his first competition of the year.
A week later, world record holder Fortune Gordien, back from a year in South Africa, got off a 14-foot 9-inch throw. Gordien, now competing for the Los Angeles Athletic club, established the previous collegiate record of 173 feet 11½ inches when he was at the University of Minnesota.
His world mark is 186 feet 11 inches. Nobody in the world bettered 180 feet last year.
With illness and Gordien throwing the discus out of the lot, the fine early season 154 feet 11½ inch toss of Stanford’s Bob Mathias went practically unnoticed.
Mathias, defending Olympic decathlon champion and a Tulare high school classmate of Jones State, scored three firsts and a third as Stanford defeated San Jose State and Fresno State in a triangular meet. Besides the discus he won the 120 yard high hurdles in 14.7 and the 220 yard lows in 24.1. He was third in the shot put.
San Jose’s Herm Wyatt, a solid individual mark of the three-way meet, however, he cleared 6 feet 8 inches in the fifth jump.
Other good jumps include Mel Martin, San Francisco Olympic club, 6 feet 6, and Manuel Ronquillo, USC, 6 feet 5.
NATIONAL CHAMPION Perry O’Brien heads a strong group of shotputters. He sailed one out 54 feet 14 inch as his USC Trojans were defeating Arizona State at Tempe. Lew Davila of the Olympic club, Moose Thompson of the LAAG, and Howard Hertz of Stanford have battled 52 feet. Thompson is the 1943 Olympic thlist.
Frank Flores of USC has broad-jumped 24 feet 6½ inches, and another Trojan, Al Sandusky, has the best pole vault mark, 13 feet 9.
Bud Held of the Olympic club, the world’s number one Javelin thrower, started his campaign with a 219 foot 2 inch loss.
On the track, an unknown Stanford junior, Bob Magna, and an Alameda high school boy, Herb Turner, so far outshine all the big name sprinters in the state. Each turned in a 5.7 100 meter race.

ING Arizona State at Tempe, Lew Davis of the Olympic club, Moose Thompson of the LAAC, and Howard Hertz of Stanford have betted 32 feet. Thompson is the 1948 Olympic thlist.
Frank Flores of USC has broad-jumped 24 feet 6½ inches, and another Trojan, Al Sandusky, has the best pole vault mark, 13 feet 9.
Bud Held, of the Olympic club, the world's number one Javelin thrower, started his campaign with a 219 foot 2 inch toes.
On the track, an unknown Stanford junior, Bob Magee, and an Ammeda high school boy, Herb Turner, so far outshine all the big name sprinters in the state. Each turned in a 5.7-100 yard dash victory last week.
Ollie Matson, the University of San Francisco football star, Gay Bryan, the Olympic club's many-event man and Craig Dixon, the BAAC's Olympic hurdle veteran, have run 2.5 centuries.
Norm Storks of USC agreed to a sparkling 29.5, 220 with a strong wind at his back. The next week he clocked a creditable 21.5 without the wind.
WALT BURNETT of San Jose has the best quarter mile time, 48.7 in the milc, so far it's been Larry Carter of UCLA, 4:17.5, Bob McMillen of San Jose, 4:18.5 and Art Garcia of USC, 4:19.6.
Southern Cal's Jack Dayla and Dixon have both topped the high hurdles in 14.2; Davis has a 23.5 flight of lows to his credit, and Dixon has run 22.6.
Although he quilt the Occidental college team, all around ace Bill Albans, now performing in an LAAC uniform, is behaving like a man who would like to beat Mathias in the decathlon.
