... Whitened sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones.—Matt. 23:27.
ANAHEIM PAST TIMES — Just a year ago, your newspapers proclaimed the fact that the rods were masisng 500,000 for a big spring push ... Flood victims were returning to their devastated homes in the East ... A three-car crash south of Laguna claimed the lives of Jack Kirtley, 60, his wife, Evelyn, 55, and a Camp Pendleton Marine, Frank Johnson, 25, Charles Cunliff, 21, and Darrel Mahood, 23, servicemen, and Joe and Donna Easterling were also injured ... Newport police had less work on the 1951 Ball week than the 1950 student holiday ... Buena Park will hold its annual "Hometown Day" May 26 ... W. Paul Wright, former Santa Ana and Fullerton newspaperman, reported the addition of a daughter to his family ... Chuck Holloway was voted Orange county's athlete of the year
Sierra Madre Wistaria Vine Gets Surgery
Size, not age may be the undoing of the famous Sierra Madre wistaria vine which sprawls itself over nearly an acre of ground—and is still growing on its 60th year.
Although this vine, the world's largest blooming plant, is given the best of care, the tremendous drain of its interwoven tendrils, a million and a half blossoms and the ultimate leaf age may some-day overtax its single main trunk and its root system.
This was pointed out by Wayne Johnson, Pasadena tree specialist, who this year inspected the giant vine and supervised minor surgery of some of its principle branches.
Thousands of people each year visit the vine grounds while the plant is in bloom and marvel at its great expanse and the lushness of its blossoms; all the time wondering how anything could get so big.
Johnson said that many wistaria vines have lived longer than Sierra Madre's plant, but none has grown so big and still remained so healthy. Need for surgery, however, he said indicates that the
servicemen, and Joe and Donna Easterling were also injured... Newport police had less work on the 1951 Ball week than the 1950 student holiday... Buena Park will hold its annual "Hometown Day" May 26... W. Paul Wright, former Santa Ana and Fullerton newspaperman, reported the addition of a daughter to his family... Chuck Holloway was voted Orange county's athlete of the year... That was the news of a year ago. Remember?
ANAHEIM NEEDS — A radio station to disseminate information in time of an emergency. If disaster should strike Anaheim would be dependent upon the county seat or metropolitan radio stations.
REPORT—Rumor has it that Thomas S. Warburton may find that there are repercussions following the apparent unwarranted termination of a coach. The citizenry of Fullerton is up in arms. Some have gone so far as to demand the sculp of the Fullerton college administrator for his part in the Walt Lunsford matter... Anyway, Thomas S., or T. Stanley (as he prefers), is getting bad press. And that ain't good!
GRIPE—A few apparently un-informed Anaheimers were a little peeved by the Hollywood Stars exhibition games at La Palma park. Honestly, they shouldn't have been. If it hadn't been for the good work of Vic Ruedy, the ceecgar-smoking park superintendent, there wouldn't have been any kind of a spring training team in La Palma park. It was through Vic that Fred Haney got the Brown Derby man—Bob Cobb—to switch training sites... Impartial baseball fans who took in both the Ellay Angels and the Stars exhibitions will tell you Anaheimers got a rare treat. Branch Rickey had the Pittsburgh Pirates playing intercamp games. These were open to the public without charge... Al Koenig will tell you that it is "a major league agreement," that makes it mandatory to charge a buck admission where big leaguers and potential big servicemen, and Joe and Donna Easterling were also injured... Remember?
Johnson said that many wistaria vines have lived longer than Sierra Madre's plant, but none has grown so big and still remained so healthy. Need for surgery, however, he said indicates that the plant would limp if it walked. But the plant expert would not estimate the number of years the Sierra Madre wistaria has yet to live.
It was planted in 1892 from a gallon tin can, and since then it has crawled over a house and a trellis system to cover over 40,000 square feet.
Grounds have been opened to the public each spring since 1913. This year the blossoming season will continue through most of April, and thousands of persons will visit the vine during Sierra Madre's annual Wistaria Fete and Flower Festival.
The Wistaria vine gardens are open to the public each day between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Lichens is found all over the world, with only a few species thriving in polar regions. But the same species are found in both Arctic and Antarctic regions.
Who would have thought the Democrats were smart enough to get the country in the shape it's in today?
tial baseball fans who took in both the Eliay Angels and the Stars exhibitions will tell you Anaheimers got a rare treat. Branch Rickey had the Pittsburgh Pirates playing intercamp games. These were open to the public without charge.
Al Koenig will tell you that it is "a major league agreement" that makes it mandatory to charge a buck admission where big leaguers and potential big leaggers play. For the good of Anaheim, here's hoping Hollywood utilizes the La Palma facilities for many years to come. Adequate housing isn't available for major league clubs so why not be satisfied with the best of the second best? He-min? We sincerely hope the Stars got what they came here for; good, sound spring training.
POLITICS: Anaheimers like Ike General Eisenhower's popularity seems to be contagious. But Anaheimers with Democratic leanings show a preference for Estes Kefauver, the crime-busting senator from Tennessee. Ike Anaheimers had their say; the balloting would be between these two sterling Americans in November.
HISTORICAL NOTE — On March 30, 1867, the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. In 1869 Secretary William H. Seward crossed the continent to inspect the real estate he bought for Uncle Sam. It was on Sept. 20, 1869, that Abraham Lincoln's right-hand man stopped over in Anaheim.
NITECARSULE — Most of the things a fellow really likes to do are either immoral, illegal or fattening.
IN JAPAN—Two Marine mechanics check the markings on a "Banshee" jet fighter at Itami, Japan. They are M/Sgt. James W. Mann, 36, left whose wife, Mary, lives at 13561 Katella ave., Anaheim, and Sgt. Melford L. McQuade 23, of Seattle Wash. M/Sgt. Mann is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Mann of Hedley, Tex.—(Marine Corps photo)
