Whose keepeth the command will (car no evil things).
—Eccl. 8-5.
BACKGROUND — A colorful chapter in Anaheim history is all but forgotten. The Societas Fraterula is a thing of the past and would be forgotten except for the files of the Anaheim Gazette.
In 1826; a wealthy Englishman, George P. Hinde, arrived in Anaheim with his wife and children.
He bought a tract of land five miles northeast of Anaheim and had a five-story frame building erected. The architectural peculiarities of the structure was the talk of the town.
Although the building had an impressive exterior, every room, halls, and closets were round or oval shaped.
POWER—According to the Gazette of May 20, 1879, it was an invisible power that led Hinde across the ocean and thence westward to Anaheim. He kept going until he reached the very spot where he built the unusual house. Two years later, under the com-
'Wings Over Jordan' Choir Here Friday
The world-famous "Wings Over Jordan" Negro choir, who have been on the Columbia Broadcasting System network every Sunday for the past 12 years, will be in Anaheim on Friday night, to give an admission-free performance at Anaheim Union High school auditorium at 8 o'clock, sponsored by the Anaheim Association of Christian Churches. The public is invited.
The distinguished group will be under the leadership of their pastor-director, Rev. Glynn T. Settle, and are visiting our community in the course of a nationwide goodwill tour, endeavoring to show America what loyal citizens and what cultural contributors the Negro race has proved to be.
They will also sing for an assembly of students at the high school in the afternoon, and will be entertained for dinner by the Men's club of St. Michael's Episcopal church. Members of various churches of Anaheim will provide overnight lodging in their homes for the distinguished guests.
The U.S. Weather Bureau now issues bi-monthly bulletins predicting the trend of the weather over wide areas for a month in advance—often with some accur-
POWER—According to the Gazette of May 20, 1879, it was an invisible power that led Hinde across the ocean and thence westward to Anaheim. He kept going until he reached the very spot where he built the unusual house. Two years later, under the command of "spirits," a Dr. Schlessinger arrived in Anaheim. The mystic power led him to Hinde's place.
When Dr. Schlessinger and Mr. Hinde met, it was with a realization that they were brought together to accomplish some grand purpose.
ORGANIZATION — The two men formed the Societas Fraternia, Dr. Schlessinger was president; Hinde, secretary, and Ira Carpenter, treasurer.
This was a unique group. Its most remarkable feature was the strange view it took on man's diet. They ate no meat of any kind, no eggs, milk, butter, cheese or bread. In fact they ate nothing but fruit and vegetables—and those had to be uncooked.
Nothing passed their lips except that which grew in the ground and it had to be eaten as it grew.
Even fried fruit was banned. Members of the Societas believed that cooking destroyed the spirit essence which pervades everything in nature.
BELIEFS—Members of the Societas could not shake hands with aeretics (all were heretics except themselves) without losing the precious essence.
The Doctor and his associates did not believe in work as nature provides everything necessary for man's existence; the necessity for continuous toll does not exist.
They held the marriage ceremony in contempt as the Societas Fraternia held many views in common with those of the famed Oneida Community.
IMPRACTICAL — The Doctor never practiced medicine in Anaheim.

did not believe in work as nature provides everything necessary for man's existence; the necessity for continuous toll does not exist.
They held the marriage ceremony in contempt as the Societas Fraternia held many views in common with those of the Iamed Oneida Community.
IMPRACTICAL — The Doctor never practiced medicine in Anaheim, nor did he remain long as head of the organization he helped to found.
Hinde, however, remained and the society lasted for something like 40 years before it disintegrated.
HISTORY. Although the Societas Fraternia formed a colorful chapter of Anaheim's colorful past, the story has been lost with the passage of time.
Although the Polish settlement, two miles east of Anaheim, gained prominence after the turn of the century when Mme. Helena Modicka, the great actress, and Henryk Stonkiewicz, author of Quin Vadis, etc., organized a cultural community, the more dramatic chapter of Anaheim history is virtually forgotten.
WHITEMAN SERVICES HELD
Jessie F. Whiteman, 83, formerly a resident of Anaheim for eight years, who had been recently making his home in Pasadena, was interred yesterday at Fairhaven cemetery, following graveside services directed by the H. R. Brown mortuary of Santa Ana.
Mr. Whiteman died last Saturday. He was a retired truck operator. He leaves two sisters in Ohio.
