Anaheim Gasette WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 1952 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA St. John’s and Kansas Reach NCAA Finals SEATTLE — It will be Lovellette & Ca., of Kansas against the giant killers of St. John’s for the National Collegiate basketball crown tonight. Kansas got to the throne room doorway the easy way in the semi-finals of the NCAA playoffs last night, as Big Clyde Lovellette paced a 74-53 victory over Santa Clara. St. John’s of Brooklyn got there by the margin of a game-ending gasp, with a 61-50 win over favored Illinois. In the title classic it will be the clever passing game of St. John’s against the power that comes from having a tower of strength like 8-foot 9-inch Lovellette in the slot. The big Kansas center scored 33 points against the Santa Clara Broncos. He stood out as a playmaker and backboard bulwark as well as a scorer. His 108 points for the three-game NCAA playoff set a new record. The old mark, in four games, was 85. It was set by Don Sunderlage of Illinois last year. Kansas won a 52-51 victory over St. John’s when they met last year in Madison Square Garden. But these St. John’s hoop magicians have thrown the book out the window. No one could find a better authority on baseball as it was played 45 or 23 years ago than that master of the art, Cobb, out the question is: After 10 many years away from the game, from even soaring much major league ball, how well informed is Cobb on baseball in its present form? Clearly superior in a majority of the track events, the Colonists conceded the meet largely on their inability to show a field squad. The meet left Coach Sam Keith's cindermen winless in their third league outing of the season. Larry Kirchmann, sensational Colonist dash and middle distance man, again was the outstanding thinclad in the event, handily annexing the 100, 220 and running the anchor lap on 880 relay. Never pushed, his times were slightly slower than the record marks he chalked up in the four way meet at Huntington Beach last week—running the 100 in 10.9 and the 220 in 22.1. Ira Webber, popular student body prey, also sparkled in the day's outing—copping the 440 in 54.2 and running a neat first lap in the varsity relay, where, despite severe jostling around the east turn he overtook his man, moving into the passing zone...Newport's bad pass on the last lap then turned the event into a walk-away. Anaheim's milers, while unable to take the first spot, nabbed the next three places as Reed, Eberhard and DeLeón crossed the tape in that order. Although surely missing the services of laid-up Aaron Peralta, ace Colonist timber-topper, Anaheimer Ted Talamantez managed a fourth in the 120 highs and a second in the 180 lows. With Bill Walker and other ace Bee team men utilized to bolster the varsity, the Bees were land-slid 88 to 8 with Salazar taking the solitary first place in the broad jump with an 18'4" leap. Seals Get Revenge One Year Too Late PALO ALTO — (A) The San Francisco Seals are getting revenge from the Sacramento Solons—the club that shoved them into the Pacific Coast League cellar the last day of the 1951 season. The Seals passed the Solons 5-2 yesterday, their second consecutive win. Lefty Al Lien and Rookie Kenny Wright gave up eight hits, while the Seals knocked Kenny Gables and Orville Grova for 14. Eight players on the roster of the Washington Senators hail from Cuba. None comes from Washington, D.C. Cliff Chambers, who pitched a no-hit no-run game for Pittsburgh last season and is now a member of the St. Louis Carunals, is a graduate of Washington State U. Old Oss, himself, is easy these days. "I don't care who the Yankees out there in centerfield-Jensen, Woodling, Cervis ever—he's not going to be DiMaggo," Oss declared. The course of a season, the difference between having Joe and another player out there came to six or eight and Stengel will find it only talking about his field. "Believe me, I know dored me in the three years at Cleveland, I can remember least a half-dozen games to those guys that we won won but for some catch or Joe made at a crucial never saw one to equal him respect." Their star dash man, little Mickey Gouyd, who last week smashed a school dash record, nabbed a first in the 180 in 19.9. Anahi Baseball Team Takes 9-1 Win from Corona Anaheim high school's baseball squad, with only one win in five starts this season, got back in the win column yesterday afternoon as they blasted Corona high schoolers 9-1, in a game at La Palma park. Off to a one run lead in the first inning, the Colonists set the pace with the season's first double play in the season—from Lupe Gonzales to Herbel to Hatfield. The Mayflower men forged steadily ahead in the fourth, adding two runs—then tacking on three more in both the fifth and sixth frames. Dick Ramella, Colonist hurler, was credited with the victory. The Sox may not add much so long this season, but there are those with the clubs who profess to believe they'll hold it which counts—the final day. Much of the optimism is based on the point that Paul Richards is manager, tactician and brunet of the outfit. He worked a small miracle in his freshman year as a major league manager. With what most critics think is a stronger club, Richards in his second go-round might do better.
