MIDDLETON MOTOR S 420 W. CENTER ST., ANAHEIM DE SOIO-PLYMOUTN Dealers present GROUCHO MARX in "You Set Your Life" every week on both Re Tragedy of Cancer Told in 'Digest' Article "After a long illness"—an article appearing in the April issue of the Reader's Digest, narrates the tragic story of the death of Mrs. Bruce Barton. "It is one of the most moving personal stories ever told about cancer," said Worth Babbit, Orange county chairman of the 1952 Fund Drive, "and it should be of immense value in the Cancer Crusade; helping to save many lives. I hope everyone reads it." "The article opens with the words—'She dies after a long illness'" Babbit continued. This is the kindly phrase that the newspapers use to spare the feelings of the family and friends, but I wonder if it would not be kinder to come right out and say 'She died from cancer!' I wonder whether we do not need to be shocked by a fresh reminder of how awful cancer is and how close it is to every one of us. The narrative closes with the lament that had it not been for the fatal delay in consulting a physician, Mrs. Barton might well be alive today. A visit to a physician at any one of seven danger signals is a paramount warning of the Society in the prevention of cancer deaths. "These seven signals, while they by no means definitely indicate cancer, do have sufficient basis upon which to justify an examination by your doctor," said Babbit. The Society lists them as follows: any sore that does not heal; a lump or thickening in the breast or elsewhere; unusual bleeding or discharge; any change in a wart 4-H Council Completes Plans For Bazaar The Orange county 4-H Club Council has big plans for the 4-H Bazaar they will hold in downtown Santa Ana April 5. The sale will be from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the Woolworth building at 203 W. 4th st. Members of the 40 4-H clubs throughout the county are collecting and making articles which will be sold at the bazaar. A special feature of the bazaar will be the sale of 4-H agricultural products such as chickens, eggs, rabbits, vegetables and fruits. The bazaar will really look like a junior size farmer's market. The sale will also have the usual articles of home made pies, cakes, cookies, clothing and rummage. Another highlight of the sale will be that of flower corsages, made both of wood pulp and real flowers. The Brea 4-H club members plan to make gardenia cor-sages with the help of club leaders Mrs. Eldora Williams and Mrs. Rosemary Hatfield. The La Habra 4-H club members are making the attractive wood pulp flowers under the guidance of one of the leaders, Mrs. H. J. Burton. In 1935 he became rector of St. Luke's of the Mountain-parish at La Crescenta and in 1942 was given his present charge. Thursday morning there will be a midweek service of Holy Communion at 10:30 a.m. Business Makes Slight Rise In February Business activity rose slightly during February in the Southern half of California, Bernard W. Jordan, manager of Security-First National Bank’s Anaheim Branch disclosed today. The bank's index of business activity, as reported in its Monthly Summary of Business Conditions, was down two per cent, however, as compared with February a year ago. A wide variety of business indicators showed increases last month, the banker said. They included total employment, factory employment, the use of electric power by industry, railroad freight volume, residential building permits, real estate sales activity, and bank debits. Building permits for dwelling units issued in Los Angeles county last month rose 30 per cent above the January figure, marking the largest volume in 11 months. Department store sales showed little change between January and February reflecting the relatively horizontal trend of retail sales which has been evident for many months, the bank manager said. The "cost of living" in this area declined in January for the first time in seven months. The revised Consumers' Price Index stood at 90 per cent above the 1935-39 average. In contrast to the sharp post-Korean upsurge in the index, which lasted until March 1951, the uptrend in the past year has been much less pronounced, the banker pointed out. At least for the time being, Mr. Jordan said, inflationary pressures on living costs seem to have diminished. Radioactive Copper Rushed NEVER ENJOYED so many wonderful ride and drive es! Radioactive Copper Rushed To Cal Tech A tiny piece of radioactive copper is being rushed by Navy plane from Chicago to California on March 27 for important tests by physicists at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Speed is essential in the shipment of the copper since it loses one half of its radioactivity every 12 hours. Capt. Frank W. MacDonald, USN, commanding officer of the Office of Naval Research in Pasadena, said the copper will be transported from the atomic pile at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago to Lockheed Terminal, Burbank, where a truck will be waiting to deliver it to Pasadena. Although minute in size, the copper will be encased in lead weighing over 600 pounds. Dr. Jesse Dumond, professor of physics, will conduct exhaustive tests on the metal. By using a curved crystal gamma ray spectrometer, Doctor Drumond will be able to measure with extreme accuracy the peculiarly interesting reaction that results from the annihilation of the positive and negative electrons. Remember Speed Kills! Job of Printing AUHS Yearbook Hits Half-Point The big job of color printing the 1952 Colonist year book was completed in the school print shop last week. Five separate colors were used. The more than 50 press runs actually exceeded the number of press runs remaining to finish the annual. Printing on the book will continue throughout the next two months. Meanwhile, Colonist Editor Don Hillary, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Hillary, 415 S. Citron st., reports that at least three sections of the year book are completed and the others are moving briskly. Biggest chore to date, he said, has been getting pictures of athletic teams. Notwithstanding the many problems connected with producing the annual, Hillary clings to the tradition that "this year's yearbook will be bigger, more colorful, and better than ever." Yearbook advisor is Howard Hall, AUHS journalism instructor, and the printing is being done by Lloyd Ross, in charge of the school's printing plant. are planning big things in the way of games which will entertain the younger shoppers.
