SECTION II Stand-Ins May Have to Accept Oscars—The Elite All Seem to be Elsewhere By JAMES BACON HOLLYWOOD (P) — Anybody who is anybody in Movieland will be present tonight for the 24th annual Academy Awards—except some of the people voted most likely to win. At least 12 of the 25 top nominees won't be on hand. Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando, choice of the Associated Press poll and most other experts for the coveted top actress and actor Oscars, are out of town. Both were nominated for roles they first played on the stage in "Streetcar Named Desire." But right now Miss Leigh is on the New York stage with her husband, Laurence Oliver, and Brando is in France. In the event this becomes a sentimental year—like some in the past—Humphrey Bogart, Shelley Winters, Jane Wyman and Eleanor Parker will be ready and willing in the audience at the RKO Pantages theater. Katharine Hepburn, Bogart's costar in "African Queen," is en route to London and won't be among those present. Montgomery Clift of "Place in the Sun" will be the only other top male star present. He's planing in from New York. Fredric March of "Death of a Salesman" could be alcoholic of "Come Fill the Cup" make it anybody's race. Ustinov, home in England, is the only absentee. WORST ATTENDANCE record of the night will go to the supporting actress nominees. All five are in New York. Lee Grant, the shoplifter of "Detective Story" was the choice of the nationwide AP critics poll but Joan Blondell of "Blue Veil" stacks up as the sentimental choice. Mildred Dunnock ("Salesman"), Kim Hunter ("Streetcar") and Thelma Ritter ("The Mating Season") could easily win. Closest battle is between "Streetcar" and "Place in the Sun" for the best picture sweepstakes. It's worth $1,000,000 added at the boxoffice for the winner of the best picture plum. MGM's double entry of "Quo Vadis" and the musical "American in Paris," and "Decision Before Dawn" are not figured to upset. The nearest thing to a sure bet is George Stevens for the best direction. His "Sun" was tabbed a director's picture from the start. He'll be there, as will Willie Wyler ("Detective Story"), Vincente Minelli ("American") and Elia Kazan ("Streetcar"), John Huston. A victory for him would make him the only three time winner. He's in New York. Arthur Kennedy (Bright Victory) is in Jamaica. CREDITS BOSOMS FOR U.S. FEMININE ELEGANCE—Emilio Schuberth, Arome fashion designer, shown measuring bust of his model, Lalla, says Italian and French women can blame their bosoms for their inability to dress as elegantly as their American sisters. Schuberth believes "the bosoms of Italian women are too big and French women are too flat chested." He says American women got that way by leading a more active life, exercising through sport or work.
