Youth often is the pawn of broken homes or parental neglect. A child, likewise, is the product of his environment. The lack of parental affection and interest often leads a youth astray. A study of juvenile delinquents reveals adult negligence in his formative development. MORALITY—The morality of today's youth is no better nor worse than the example set for him by his elders. Newspaper headlines decry youthful drug addiction, crime, reckless driving and sexual immorality. It isn't as widespread as one would believe. Youth is impetious. Youth seeks an outlet for its pent up energy. The release of this energy sometimes does not meet with the strictest moral codes. But in the long run, youth comes out on top. HOT RODS—By and large, Anaheim youth is law abiding, though there are few cases of petty mischiefs, thefts, etc. Many of the most respected citizens can look back upon their youth and remember doing unethical things — like stealing watermelons, knocking over Chick Sites and the like. Others, too, can remember trips to the woodshed for acts which in these modern times would require the counsel of the authorities. Times change and so do people. PROBLEM — Anaheim's most serious teenage problem is reckless driving. Anaheim youngsters, in this respect, are no different than others. They take undue risks. In a speed-mad world it is little wonder that kids lead-foot it when they have control of a car. Speed is the greatest menace of highway safety. School authorities, law enforcement agencies and the automotive industry are aware of the teenagers' record on the highway. Consequently driver-training is overcoming the youth menace. Teenagers taught the fundamentals of courteous driving actually make better and safer drivers than adults. Statistics have proven that driver-trained youths reduce the accident frequency rate considerably. CONCLUSION—Although Anaheim youth—a small percentage of Anaheim youth—occasionally goes off on a tangent; Anaheim can be proud of its young people. The kids are intelligent, understanding, courteous and industrious. The Anaheimers of tomorrow will be as good or better as the Anaheimer of today.
