If You Can Read You Can Cook Says Food Authority

Associated Press Women's Editor
The old joke about the bride's biscuits is now out of date.
The rankest amateur can produce a gourmet meal today in 30 minutes flat, merely by reading the directions on the package.
So wide and varied is the current list of ready-to-serve canned frozen and packaged foods that the U. S. housewife can take her pick of the secrets of the world's great chefs, heat them up in the oven, serve them as her own handwork and take the bows.
No need now to wrestle with grandmother's recipe for light rolls or biscuits. A dozen products now on the market enable the bride to turn out light-as-a-feather hot breads by the simple method of opening the package browning in the oven and serving.
She can buy frozen waffles, packaged pie crust, all manner of cake mixes which require only the addition of eggs and milk or water.
The whole meal may well come out of the frozen foods cabinet at the local grocery store, says James Blish, editor of Frosted WE OWE OUR SUCCESS TO YOU!

Woman Detective to Address County Wide Altrusa Meeting
Altrusan Clubs of Orange County are holding a joint meeting Monday, March 24, at 7 p.m. at the Anaheim Elks Club House, Mrs. Marguerite Coons, chairman of the International Affairs Committee, has secured a very important speaker, Mary Ross of Los Angeles.
Miss Ross served 21 years as a policewoman with the Los Angeles Police Department of law enforcement and justice. She retired from the force in 1949, and now owns and operates her own detective agency in Los Angeles—the only woman known to operate such an agency. Her experiences gained while with the force have been recorded in her book Badge 23, written by Virginia Kellogg. It is hoped that Miss Kellogg will be back from New York by March 24, and will accompany Miss Ross to Anaheim.
Miss Ross is well-known among the law enforcement departments for her belief in rehabilitation of
SOME SPORTSWEAR GOES TO CHURCH
Easter is a day for church clothes so it will be the more sophisticated sportswear fashions that will make their appearance. Silk print dresses and separates are top candidates. Emphasis will be on the crisp silks such as shantung and taffeta that can translate bouffant sleeves and skirts so perfectly.
Easter blouses will take two directions this year. New synthetic fabrics make the usual Easter frills easy on the eye, and easy to maintain. Ruffles and lace first offenders and her support of educational programs within the walls of prison story of her career is being led by the Hal Roach Studio recently purchased the right filming her life, as written book, Badge 23.

Food Fields, trade magazine of the industry.
Our bride can start with frozen hors d'oeuvres—the kind you used to get at the Ritz. These are popped into the oven, served piping hot and are bound to impress the most jaded epicure.
The soup course might be Chinese egg drop soup, which needs only to be thawed and heated. The fish course offers a wide variety, from fried shrimp to deviled crabs to lobster newburgh. The entree might be prepared chicken a la king and the dessert frozen cheese cake, ice cream cake roll or any kind of out-of-season fruit, from strawberries to fresh peaches, which she may thaw and serve. She may even get frozen concentrated instant coffee, if she wants to go that far.
Shrimp, crab or lobster in cocktail sauce also is available in frozen form, as are such things as chicken or beef pot pies, a long list of stews, a complete line of Chinese foods, from egg rolls to chow mein, Italian ravioli and pizza and almost anything else you can think of.
"The ultimate goal of the industry," comments Blish, "is to freeze everything."
While the frozen food boys have been busy cooking up new recipes, the canned food tycoons have not been idle. Their list of heat-and-serve delicacies is even longer, as is attested by the fact that their production in 1951 was 22 billion cans of food, or 146% cans of food for every man, woman and child in the U.S.A.
The bride who is hep may buy vacuum-canned French fried potatoes or onion rings as crisp as if she had labored hours over the deep-fat fryer. These also come frozen, need only to be heated and served.

phisticated sportswear fashions that will make their appearance.
Ruffles and lace embroideries are lavished on the nylon tricots and nylon and/orion combinations. In most cases, the trimmings are synthetic, too, with the same quick-drying, noironing properties.
The bouffant sleeve and Gibson Girl silhouette is another spring style favorite. In addition, suit blouses are made with above-elbow length puffed sleeves in very sheer crease-resistant cottons, or the synthetic fibers. These sleeves go under suit jackets, especially the very latest new Gibson Girl Jackets.
For the classic suit blouse, it's the soft, feminine, individually detailed type called the French blouse. Most have a curved dropped shoulder but no sleeves, and some bustline or midriff-section detail such as pockets, contrast yokes and buttoned tabs.
Delicious luncheon salad: alternate slices of orange with thin slices of mild sweet onion and mound creamed cottage cheese in the center. Ring the salad with water cress and pass French dressing with it.

TODAY'S CROSS-WORD PUZZLE
The bride who is hep may buy vacuum-canned French fried potatoes or onion rings as crisp as if she had labored hours over the deep-fat fryer. These also come frozen, need only to be heated and served.
Canned soups offer infinite variety, from green turtle to French onion. And of course even a bride knows that the quickest and best way to make any creamed dish is to use undiluted cream of mushroom soup instead of the tricky white sauce.
Other labor-saving canned products available on grocery shelves include: whole roast chickens or hams, beef and gravy, hamburgers, corned beef hash, various noodle and spaghetti dishes, an impressive list of such things as smoked shrimp, smoked salmon, anchovies and such, and such exotic vegetables as hearts of artichoke and hearts of palm.
If she can't bake an apple, she can buy 'em canned.
There's no longer any need to ask the prospective bridegroom, "can she cook? The answer is:
"She can cook if she can read."
Anaheim High school P-TA executive board meeting will be held Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria.
Next time you prepare meat loaf use any leftover slices for hot open-faced sandwiches for the next day's lunch. Arrange the slices on bread or toast, top with hot gravy, and serve with a cooked vegetable.
