In the rooms above the company's cafeteria, at the corner of S. Olive and Santa Ana sts., a modern laboratory has been installed by Kwikset. The laboratory, presided over by Dr. P. James Rich—Kwikset chemist—is designed to solve any problems concerned with metallurgy, testing of raw materials, controlling of coatings on metal parts, and checking the rigid specifications established by Kwikset for its products. For example, among the scientific instruments is equipment used to test the protective coating on Kwikset products—including abrasion, scratch and impact tests, strength, hardness and flexibility. AFL (Continued from Page 1) From a labor standpoint, Kwikset already outperforms the most militant labor union standards in the matter of employee benefits. Because of high pay and excellent working conditions the plant is understood frequently to receive about 100 job applications daily. Last year, when the organization effort was at its highest, the Gazette interviewed a number of Kwikset employees, who were almost unanimous in their desire "to be left alone." The Gazette concluded from the interviews that being employed at Kwikset was like suddenly becoming a partner in a thriving business. Leading the organization attempt yesterday was Arthur Timmons, who said he is secretary of the Metal Trades Council. He would not comment on the activities of his group. Through the years, your Gas Company has done a great deal to simplify and speed up its service operations. But, in spite of increased efficiency, our costs (like yours) have gone up and up. We have had to pay much more year after year for everything we buy and everything we do. Because the price you pay for gas today is about the same as in 1938, it has recently been necessary for us to seek approval of higher rates. Yet, with any increase that may result, gas will still be lower in cost than almost any other household item. ERN COUNTIES GAS COMPANY Old bargain is GAS
