Miss Talchiel, one of the stars of the New York City Center ballet, was brought in to portray Anna Pavlova in "the one piece bathing suit." Her Indian-sounding name is the McCoy; she was born in Oklahoma to an Orange father and a Scotch-Irish mother. The young dancer isn't like the usual ballerina of legend. She animatedly on many topics, including matters of the heart. "Of course, some people in the ballet do get married and have families," she remarked. "My sister, who is a dancer, married and has a child. Moira Shearer (who was working on the movie stage next door) also has a husband and is expecting a child. But many people find that mixing ballet and marriage is too difficult. "For instance when I am doing a night performance, I generally have dinner at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Then I have a bite to eat after the performance. It would be hard to find a man who could understand and adjust to such odd habits." "A ballet performer would have little time to devote to a home, what with practicing and rehearsing. Then there are the you get so many sentiments together, there is no some temper. But they really minor flareups things as the orchestra being right. She added that changing had in the been gone for several the old days, a day John Smith would get his handle to something Ptrovitch, or some suism. "When I started in 1942, no one suggested change my name," she ever, there were thought my name was which was the name of general." Miss Talchiel insisted but praise for American dancers and said this pity of talent was greatful. "But the been handicap," she France and England, altered an honor which becomes a ballet dance has been an unhealth toward male ballet this country." MORE ABOUT... Their there are the tours. I will be leaving soon when our company tours Europe for five months. How could I explain that to a husband? Miss Talchief added that the most likely mate for a ballerina would be someone who was also connected with the ballet. She tried that herself, but failed. Her marriage to George Baancame, the famous ballet director, was annulled. We talked about the ballet boom, and Miss Talchief allowed that the movies, particularly "Red Shoes," had a lot to do with it. Another important factor is the American housewife. "I have talked to many men who told me that they wouldn't have thought of going to the ballet voluntarily," she said. "But their wives dragged them to it, and the men stayed to enjoy it." The balerina punctured some beliefs about the ballet, particularly concerning temperament. "The oldtime ballerina who would blow up at the slightest mishap is a thing of the past," she remarked. "Dancers don't make big scenes backstage any more; the companies just won't put up with it." "Of course, I don't mean to say that there is no temperament in the ballet. Naturally, when becomes a ballet dancer has been an unhealthful toward male ballet this country." MORE ABOUT ... She added that the name-changing fad in the ballet has been gone for several years. In the old days, a dancer named John Smith would generally after his handle to something like Igor Petrovitch, or some such Russianism. "When I started in the ballet in 1922, no one suggested that I change my name," she said. "However, there were those who thought my name was Talchieff, which was the name of a Russian general." Miss Talchieff had nothing but praise for American mime dancers and said that the supply of talent was getting more plentiful. "But there have been handicaps," she said. In France and England, it is considered an honor when a boy becomes a ballet dancer. There has been an unhealthy attitude toward male ballet dancers in this country." MORE ABOUT... If he has anything to say in his behalf, the towering pivotman had best pipe it down to the public through his mouthpiece. Wonder if thin air at that stratospheric height of seven feet could have any effect on the mind? Or do moral standards and a sense of right and fair play merely become distorted up there? SC Cage Coach Forrest Twogood has announced that he is at last abandoning the slow, deliberate ball-control style of play for the fast break a la UCLA and John Wooden. About time, we sez. Yes, "Twogie," basketball has speeded up to the point that has run away from the ball-control patterns. Even Oklahoma A&M can no longer work them the way the Aggies once did. Ball-control basketball is as outmoded as a stationary zone defense. Twogood has the material to work a fast break next year.
