Robert Ryan Admits He's Not the Bobbysox Type By DOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD — Here's one leading man who admits that bobbysoxers aren't his main following. What's more, he's glad of it. The actor is Robert Ryan, Chicago-born former boxer and Marine. He is good-looking in a rugged sort of way, but he readily confessed that the teen-age fans don't blow their tops over him. "They never have," he remarked. "One reason is that I have never played the kind of role that would rank the kids mad for me. The sole exception was 'the picture in which I got my first big break' — 'Tender Comrade,' opposite Ginger Rogers. That was during the war, when the movies were making a play for the bobbysox audience. "I probably would have gotten typed in that category, because the studio had four or five scripts lined up for me and they tended in that direction. But luckily I was eaved by going into the Marines." "It was actually a good break for my career. A lot of young guys who were playing leading men in those days and were the rage of the malt-shop set, are forgotten today." "The bobby sox audience is fickle. The kids drop their idols when someone new comes along. Also, they grow up and find other interests. An actor who bases his career on them alone finds him the actor think he's job." Bryan observed that like to pattern his that of the late W. "He was a great did the things he wore Ryan remarked. To gradually work her acting. That's why in this business myself into the film so that I know will be taken care are able to take off self. Now I'd like cut things. I want and television, as turns." He probably worked of a chance to for and a half years. His contract extends studio generally kept or loans him out; he in "The Texas Man doesn't mind working." I'm not selective geometry Clift and do," he commented, an actor should know and I'm always r new things." ALL THE PEBRIS WE MUST OFFOUGHTA JAM THE LIMBAN RADAR AND CONFUSE EM! BUT WE DON'T SHARE EM OFF OUR TIME! THE TRAITOR, SVEND, DEGRADED TO DECK-HAND DUTifully MONITORS THE CONTROLS OF STERN JET 22 HE COUNT HAS A AST, TERRIFIC CARD TO PLAY! HEAR THAT, CADET! BUT YOU MAKE 'EM SOUND PURTY! YOU LISTEN HERE BIGGING WOMAN! I DON'T LIKE THEM WORDS. BUT I'M HUNGRY! "It was actually a good break for my career. A lot of young guys who were playing leading men in those days and were the rage of the malt-shop set are forgotten today. "The bobby sox audience is fickle. The kids drop their idols when someone new comes along. Also, they grow up and find other interests. An actor who bases his career on them alone finds himself in trouble when they lose interest in him." Bryan's theory seems to have been evidenced in recent Hollywood history. Frank Sinatra evoked the most hysterical response from the bobbysoxers, and his later career has failed to maintain the momentum of the war years. Van Johnson was dropped like a hot spud when the youngsters were disenchanted with his marriage. His studio had to cast him in dramatic roles instead of relying on his romantic appeal. Montgomery Clift was another who hit a let-down. His miscasting in "The Heiress" didn't help his career at all. Even Hopalong Cassidy has experienced the fickle nature of the juvenile audience. "I can watch it happen with my own little boy, Tim," Ryan continued. "Every week he has a new favorite on television. Just the other day, he asked me, 'have you ever been a space man?' I had to admit that was one of the few lines of work that I haven't been in." The actor added that the bulk of his fan mail comes from adults. "Most of the letters are from intelligent people," he said. "That's the kind of a response that makes Horace Mann's team win the chase the Recreation Depot venile Basketball league day, as they downed lington 22-19. This marked the second time they made a clean sweep, as they took both leagues in flag football. It was the terrific all-around play of Robert Godoy, Horace Mann's ace center, who led the Mann attack. He scored eight points in the ball game, and continuously passed up shots that he would ordinarily make, to completely baffle the Washington players. Washington's center, Filadeffia, scored the game's high of 10 points to lead the scorers. Horace Mann's players will receive a trophy for the school trophy case, and a ribbon for each boy who played in the league's games. George Washington will get second-place ribbons, Thomas Jefferson third place, and Benjamin Franklin the fourth place ribbons.
