Local Optimists Get Cancer Facts For Men from Physician Member
Anaheim’s own Optimist, Dr. Brock Roberts, addressed the club at their weekly Thursday evening meeting held at Mother’s Kitchen on the basic cancer facts for men. “There are seven danger signals and these should be indelibly impressed on our minds. No person, no age and no sex are exempt. Furthermore, cancer is curable. The dread disease that is killing one out of eight Americans can be cured if caught in time by one of three methods: X-ray, radium and surgery.”
The seven symptoms that a sensible person should particularly note:
1. Any sore that consistently does not heal.
2. A lump or thickening in the breast or elsewhere.
3. Unusual bleeding or discharge.
4. Any noticeable change in a wart or mole.
5. Persistent indigestion or difficulty in swallowing.
6. Persistent hoarseness or cough.
7. Any change in normal elimination habits.
Driving home the facts were two short explanatory movies sponsored by the American Cancer Society, shown by the club’s cinematographer, Bob Hutchinson.
Main point to remember is that as many men die of cancer as do women. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells or tissues anywhere in the body. Time is the greatest curing factor in controlling the rapid multiplying and spreading of cancer diseased cells. It is wise to have a physical check-up once a year. Limit the growth and cancer can be cured. Dr. Roberts assured his listeners.
George Tucker, deputy district governor of the Orange county 10th area, from Laguna Beach, announced plans for the Boys’ Oratorical Speak-off to be held at Santa Ana in mid-April. Representatives from every club in San Diego, Imperial and Orange county are expected to be on hand. This year’s topic is entitled “Optimism for Courageous Living.” Local awards, paid by the Anaheim club, are three prizes of $15, $15 and $5. Winner of the area speak-off will enjoy an expense paid trip to Catalina Island where he will compete for 14th District honors. Winner of the district contest will appear at the national

"The Saints at Rome" will be the subject of Pastor Bob Kevorkian's message at the 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship at the First Baptist church, Broadway at Citron.
The Apostle Paul has given a high commendation to the little band of Christians huddled in the wicked metropolis of Rome. How does this group compare with the Christian of today? Are the circumstances of the present-day Christian like that of the Roman believers?
At the 7:30 p.m. service, the subject will be "Jacob's Ladder." Many have heard the familiar tune to the words, "We are climbing Jacob's ladder," but to understand its significance means to have knowledge of the actual historical incident.
Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the services. A nursery and Junior church is maintained for them.

Ellis Back, who recently returned from the Batang Mission station on the Chinese-Tibetan border, will speak at the Christian church this Sunday at the morning service. Mr. Back saw the formation of the communistic regime in West China and the rapid build-up of hatred against all Americans. He was forced to flee with his family through Tibet into India. During this flight mountain passes 17,000 feet in height were crossed and for a period of 16 days they were forced to walk over narrow mountain trails with only two small bowls of soupy rice for each day's ration.
Mr. Back will tell of his personal adventures, and also relate something or the progress of communism in Asia and the future of Christian missions in China.

Stanton Lions to Sponsor Branch Organization in Westminster
Charley Brothers, member of the Stanton Lions club, made an appeal at their regular meeting to sponsor the organization of a Lions group for Westminster. It was voted to hold a spaghetti dinner Feb. 26, at 8 p.m., in the Stanton Lions Community clubhouse to which 31 prospective members, who had already been contacted by Brothers, would be invited.
Brothers introduced Philip E. Hastings of Redwood City, Calif., special representative from Lions International in Chicago who spoke about ways and means to help start the Westminster Lions.
Sgt. Russell Campbell of the Orange county sheriff's office, was the featured speaker on "Narcotics." He stressed three points that are the most current cause of narcotics being used by young people: lack of parental control, excessive use of automobiles by teen-agers and the consumption of liquor by teen-agers. A movie called "The Terrible Truth" illustrated Campbell's talk.
A spaghetti dinner for Boy Scout Troop 92 will be given from 6 to 8 p.m., March 22. Admission will be $14, proceeds going to groups who sell tickets. All tickets

Army Official
States Reasons
For Air Bases
WASHINGTON (P) — An Air Force official told Senators today that the Joint Chiefs of Staff ordered rush construction of air bases in North Africa soon after the communist attack in North Korea.
Assistant Secretary of the Air Force Edwin V. Huggins offered this explanation for the hurried aspects of the construction in testimony to the Senate preparedness investigation subcommittee. The Senators are digging into reports of waste and estravagance on the multi-million dollar costs of overseas airbases.
“This was an urgent job,” Huggins said.
“The emergency was part of a decision by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.”
Huggins indicated, but did not say directly, that top Pentagon leaders were apprehensive of a communist drive in Europe or Africa after the Korean invasion in June, 1960.
The Senators had developed earlier in the hearings that the Air Force asked speedy completion of five air bases in French Morocco (North Africa) within six months at an estimated cost of more than 800 million dollars.
Senator Hunt (D-Wyo), acting chairman, noted that the original schedule called for equipment to move to the airbase sites in January of last year and for the bases to be completed by July.
Instead, Hunt said, delays in negotiations with the French on the sites stalled the start of the program until April.
Hunt asked if the “Air Force was negligent” in insisting upon completion by July 1 despite the delayed start.
Downey Rice, committee attorney, noted that Pentagon report

QUESTION: Is there any way I can get up a shell on the tile wall of my bedroom?
- J. B., Brockton, Massachusetts
ANSWER: Start by attaching small blocks of wood to the tile wall with adhesives. The type of adhesive is generally available. Most of them are black in color, and will not practically all kinds of materials together very well. With blocks in position, use rubber to attach futures in customary way.
QUESTION: Please advise how to remove rust stains from white substrate shingles. The stains are caused by rain water droplets from gable and lower rants.
- J. H. C., Bronx, N.Y.
ANSWER: Use a solution of saline (saltines called sodium carbonate) granulated soap to warm water. Scrub gills with this mixture, using a still air scrubber thoroughly with clear water—use garden hose with full pressure. Start your scubbing at the bottom; otherwise the dirt from above will make stains on lower shingles, which will be hard to remove.

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted...—Koe 2:1-8.
ANAHEIMERS REMEMBER —
A year ago today the Yanks resumed their "killer" offensive in Korea rolling northward on the central front as two new American divisions joined the fracas... Supervisor Willard Smith said that $10,000 was earmarked for the development of O'Neil Park... Lt. Col. Robert M. Hayes assumed command of the lighter-than-air base... Ocean Hunting got under way at Newport... Property owners of Orange county were billed for $21,159,467 in local taxes—that was nine percent more than the $19,049,852 in 1949-50... Rainfall figures were far below normal in spite of the .27 inches of precipitation. Anaheim's total to date last year was only .497 inches... The Howard Hills were infesting this time last year... Alex Gimley was torn into the Fullerton college pool following the Hurons.
Anaheimers didn't concern with Energetic Earnie's latest enterprise.
HISTORIC — The Anaheim-Telegram road is a historic landmark, a definite link with Anaheim's past. Why didn't the Chamber of Commerce object to the Anaheim-Pueblo and the Anaheim-Sandra Roads in Ellen county? They're just as confusing as the Anaheim-Telegram Road?
SUGGESTION — If Energetic Earnie would like to clear up confusing street names, it might be a good idea to start closer to home.
Where does Palm street end and Spadra Road begin?
Then there is the matter of Lemon street which becomes Harvard avenue after it crosses Orangethorpe. It is one and the same street and should have the same name from one end to the other.
La Palma and North streets are also confusing to some newcomers. I am told. Cypress avenue joins Placentia Avenue—which by the way never quite reaches Placentia.
NAMES — Santa Ana street right here in Anaheim is a misnomer. An inebriated sailor might easily "be confused and exasperated" if he wished to take it to Santa Ana.
Anheim Blvd., never quite gets to Anaheim. Guess the Long Beach city council can expect a letter
