READY FOR EMERGENCIES—Maintenance men at the Anaheim Division of Northrop Aircraft, Inc., go through their paces during a realistic fire-fighting practice at the plant. While the big, concrete Anaheim building is relatively free of fire hazards, Northrop spares no effort in emergency control training designed to protect personnel and property. A small wooden house, constructed of scraps, filled with straw and soaked with oil, burns as the amateur firemen bring one of the division's big fire hoses into play. It took just one minute and 55 seconds for the crew to drag the fire cart 200 yards, connect the hot water supply and quench the blaze. Claims in fire control are held twice weekly at Northrop's Anaheim factory to prepare its personnel for emergency service. Anaheim fireman, William Dowden, 1127 W. Chestnut st., Santa Ana above left, and Sgt. I. D. Draper, Placent member of the plant protection crew (not shown), directed the day's activities. The Anaheim Division is currently producing rugged control devices for the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. Question Arises Over Releasing Purple Heart Meets Returned to Trump Question Arises Over Releasing Names of Dead, Injured, Missing WASHINGTON (AP) — Should the military announce immediately the names of men killed, injured or missing in major accidents or withhold them until relatives have been notified? This question, for which logical and humane arguments can be made on either side, was pointed up today by a new Air Force regulation. The regulation increases from four to 12 hours the time that must elapse between the sending of official notification to next of kin and the release of names for use by press and radio. What troubles everyone—relatives, military and press-radio—is this: In holding back names for publication the relatives of 10 or 20 men may be shielded from the shock of receiving the first word through press or radio announcement; if the military has been unable to reach them meanwhile. But the relatives of possibly 100 other men, known to be in the area of the accident, undergo hours or days of anxiety until they know the names of their servicemen are not on the grim list. The military feels that its policy—withholding names for a specified period until either relatives have been notified or it may be assumed sufficient time has elapsed for such notification to be completed—is the lesser of two evils. But the other side of the problem was demonstrated recently in an incident during winter maneuvers at Camp Drum, N. Y. A plane with four crewmen and a load of paratroopers who were to make a drop crashed on takeoff. Authorities announced that four men were dead. The news appeared in early morning newspaper editions and on radio newscasts. At Camp Drum for the maneuvers were 33,000 soldiers, paratroopers and members of plane Purple Heart Medal Returned to Trump By Angered Mother MEMPHIS (AP) — A mother has malled to President Truman the Purple Heart medal and scroll she received after death of her soldier son in Kokoto. Mrs. Donna Cooper, whose year-old son, Paul, was killed Oct. 1, in what she called "nine less slaughter," said she wrote president: "I am returning it to you this thought—to me he is a boll of the 109,000 men who he been sacrificed in needless slaughter, a so-called 'police action' has not and could never be said factorily explained to patriots Americans who love their country and the ideals it stands for. "If there had been a need armed conflict to preserve American way of life, I could have him proudly and would have treasured the medals. However since there was nothing superficial in his whole life, I can mar his memory by keeping medal and stereotyped words that hold no meaning and fail to proise a better tomorrow for the one that he died for." at McMAHAN'S... 5-TIED BROOMS Made exclusively for McMahan's. ANAHEIM Phone 2524 Relics of Abraham Lincoln on Auction Sale in New York City NEW YORK (UP)—Relics of a one-time country lawyer sold for $185,253 here yesterday. The lawyer was Abraham Lincoln. The 392 relics were among 842 items in the famed Lincoln collection of the late Oliver R. Barrett of Chicago, on auction sale yesterday and today at Parke-Bernet galleries. The sales told the story of Lincoln the man troubled by self-doubts, quick in wit, rich in prophesy. "How miserably things seem arranged in this world," he wrote. "If we have no friends, we have no pleasure; if we have them, we are soon to lose them." He wrote these words to his intimate friend, Joshua Fry Speed. For this letter and 13 others to Speed, the Barrett Lincoln collection fund paid $35,000—the highest price ever paid for a collection of Lincoln letters. They will be given to the Illinois State Historical society. Lincoln's own record of the Lincoln-Douglas debates went for $24,000 to Alfred Withal Stern of Chicago, second highest price of the day. Many of the items were intimate Lincolnesque material: Lone-ly letters to his wife, an old text book, an old axe handle, a family Bible. The man is Michael Wilding, 9-year-old British actor, and 19-year-old Liz is scheduled to marry him Friday at Caxton Hall registry office in Westminster. The ceremony will be brief. Both Liz and her intended said they hoped there would be little hassle and that there would be only 2 or 15 guests. It will be the second wedding for each. She is divorced from hotel heir Nicky Hilton, Wilding from British actress Kay Young, this marriage, the couple agreed, to stick. And Liz said they both want children. State Senator Urges Holding Line On New and Old State Operations SACRAMENTO (CNS) — State Senator Ben Hulse, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, today recommended to the committee "most urgently and seriously" that no new services be added to the state's operations, and that no old service be expanded. In effect, he said, "it means economy to a greater extent than even is recommended by the Department of Finance and the Legislative Auditor." Finance has recommended an operations budget $36 million higher than last year, and the legislative auditor has recommended cuts of $6 million additional. Hulse said that the auditor "has not squeezed all the water out of the budget, so let us get our wringers and get all the water out. I mean it." He also warned the committee as it got into its first session of the current budget hearings previous to the legislature's convening next month, that he doesn't think there is a great surplus to be expected. "Even if revenues are high," he stated, "we can't claim a surplus when we are in debt, as we most certainly are." He referred to bond issues the state owes, among other items, including $250 million for schools. Last week the Assembly Ways and Means committee finished its hearings on the budget. They barely nibbled at the $36 million increase over last year, cutting out only $800,000. Hulse and other members of the Senate committee commented on this. Hulse said the legislature pays a considerable sum to maintain the auditor. "It is money well spent," he said, "but we must follow his recommendations and put the burden of proving Auditor Alan Post wrong on the department seeking the big boosts. Let's follow Post to the item, and cut even more than he recommends!"
