John Marshall said it...
Karl Marx, the intellectual father of communism, devised a 10-plank platform whereby he believed, the capitalistic or free enterprise economic system, with its right of private ownership of property, could be destroyed. Two of these plans dealt with taxation and ran as follows: 1. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax. 2. Abolition of all right of inheritance—that is, a 100 per cent inheritance tax.
We have not yet reached the entire communist objective, but we have come an ominously long way along the road. Today the tax on individual incomes runs to a high of 92 per cent—and its minimum is 22.2 per cent on incomes of not over $2000. The corporation tax is 92 per cent, to which 30 per cent more is added for so-called "excess profits." And the inheritance taxes are very steep.
It is this situation which has stirred up so much support for a Constitutional amendment to limit the taxing power of Congress. The proposed amendments fix the rate at 25 per cent, and provides that it can be raised to a higher level in the event of such an emergency as war. The whole aim is to force economy and efficiency on the government by Constitutionally depriving it of excessive amounts of money. The cloth would have to be put to fit.
Destruction of free enterprise and truly representative government can be accomplished by drying up the economic resources that maintain them. That is what our insane fiscal policy is doing now. John Marshall said it all when he said that the power to tax is the power to destroy.

On old trick...
For some reason, a great many bureaucrats take a peculiar delight in denouncing business. And they often do it in such a vague and general way that it is impossible to make a factual refutation of the charges.
An anonymous Office of Price Stabilization official provides a current example of this dangerous and insidious strategy. He recently alleged that there have been price control violations by what he termed major elements of the meat industry. He did not name names, and he was not specific in any way. Thus, by implications, he smeared all those who have anything to do with the important add complex job of supplying this country's huge demand for meat.
It is undoubtedly true that somewhere somebody has misunderstood or misinterpreted a technical regulation laid down by OPS to govern the selling of meat. OPS regulations have often been models of confusion—OPS officials themselves have been unable to solve particle problems arising under the complicated language of a vast array of orders and amendments. In some cases, the regulations have been in the nature of controls for the mile of controls, rather than controls designed to produce the kind of meat the consumer wants.
All this to one side, to make a blanket accusation against a major industry, without specific evidence, represents an extreme of official recklessness. Every objective study made of the meat industry shows that the vast majority of people and companies within it have done their level best to abide by the law, unreasonable and unworkable as the law may be—and that many concerns have suffered severely in a financial way as a result.

Band Television Show Is Sought by Dick Jurgens
By TOM E. DANSON
HOLLYWOOD—Many memories come back when on the radio you hear the voice of Johnny Grant say—"Here's that band again." Yes, it's Dick Jurgens, currently playing at the Hollywood Palladium, but the nostalgia of it all comes from the old Catalina days, where Dick became popular. "I'd like nothing better than to be at Catalina again in summer," Dick told me, "it brings back memories to me, too, after being there for five seasons, from 1937 to 1941."
World War II brought a halt to Dick's band business when he joined the Marine Corps in 1942, however, his talents could not be anothered, for soon, he and organized entertainment units for shows in the South Pacific. The mits played for 300 captains, 350 military camp units and traveled to 30 islands. We once stopped on Makin Island and played to five White men doing the full show," said Dick.
Dick reorganized his band in 1960, starting on a series of one-hitters from coast-to-coast. His popularity is proven by the fact that the balance of the year is ready booked solid.
What I'd really like," Jurgens said, "is a television show of my life. I have lots of things ally set for TV—for sight, that and feel that we are primed at now for a good TV show." continued with, "a show that gives plenty of living room time, too.

ON THE LAM ... with Jim Lamhoff
The approaching Rocky Marciano-Lee Savold fight looms as a mismatch from the prestige angle if from nothing more. Savold has everything to gain and nothing to lose. He's well along on the old downhill trail—a loss would do him no more harm and an upset win for him, which appears highly improbable, would provide him with a good argument for a title shot and would certainly rate him as a top-notch heavyweight again.
Marciano may justifiably have trouble getting excited about the bout. If he wins easily as expected, fightdom's reaction will be "so what?" The Massachusetts Mauler has just about reached the top of the heavyweight contenders' pile, and is expected to dispose of those fistmen from the lower heavyweight echelons.
However, if Savold pulls the big upset, the effect would be disastrous to Marciano, who has captured the fight public's imagination probably more than any heavyweight since Billy Conn. But is doesn't appear the competent Marciano has to worry too much.
Our reaction to the whole thing is that it seems a shame that worthy challengers such as Marciano who deserve title fights right away, have to keep in practice and in funds by belting such hasbeens as Savold, while his highness, champion Joe Walcott, folls in idleness and takes his own sweet time at arranging to take on any...

Four miles west of Anaheim was reported by Dr. M. M. Mas. The consideration was a while Protestants are largely Republican. The top Democratic leaders of the state are also Catholic.
Therefore, to make any headway with the voters of his own party, Kefauver advisers think he will have to take a firm stand in favor of sending an ambassador to the Vatican. Otherwise, they advise, Harry Truman, who has already expressed himself, will walk away with the Catholic vote.
Meanwhile, sentiment in Kefauver's home state and most of the South—from which he must also win delegates — is strongly against sending an ambassador to the Vatican.
A desire to smoke the Tennessee Senator out on this dynamite-laden issue was reported to be one reason why the president reversed himself to remain in the New Hampshire primary.

Our reaction to the whole thing is that it seems a shame that worthy challengers such as Marciano, who deserve title fights right away, have to keep in practice and in funds by belting such hasbeens as Savold, while his highness, champion Joe Walcott, lolls in idleness and takes his own sweet time at arranging to take on any challengers.
Walkcott's robust claims that he can definitely kick Ezzard Charles or Marciano or anyone else seem to be belied by his refiance to emerge from his easy chair and fight them.
Speaking of Walcott, what ever happened to the hallyhooed defense of his title against Harry "Kid" Matthews that was supposed to be definitely in the making?
It looks now as if Matthews will have to wait his turn after Charles and Marciano, and this appears only fair. After all, Matthews is, in reality, only a light-heavyweight and has already ducked out of one opportunity to meet Joey Maxim for supremacy of that division.
We wonder now if the great Sugar Ray Robinson will someday be among those battling it out for the heavyweight crown.
If the proposed Maxim-Robinson bout for the lightheavy title is arranged and the Sugar Man wins, he will, and let us know if we're wrong on this, be the first man in boxing history to consecutively hold the championships of four weight divisions.
Henry Armstrong held three different weight class titles, the featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight, simultaneously, but he did not go on to fight as a middleweight.
And from a lightheavy title斗, Robinston, probably the most naturally-endowed and best-developed and most intelligent of the present crop of pugilists, conceivably might put on a few more pounds and go on in quest of the most esteemed championship of all.

Anaheim Bee Cagers Capture Tilt From Newport Harbor Squad 49-44
In a six-saw battle Friday night in Newport Harbor's gun the Anaheim Bee Colonists and the Sailors really put on a thrilling display of basketball talent for the sparsely attending popul with the locals coming out ahead 49-48 to clinch at least a tie for the Sunset league title.
Anaheim has one more loop game to play—Friday night at Orange and a victory there for the Hustockmen will give them the title outright, while a loss there will give them the title along with Huntington Beach.
The victory Friday night was the eighth league victory of the season for the Colonists and their eighth straight win of the season. It leaves them with a total win-loss record of 16-3.
For a while Friday night it looked as though Anaheim would not win their eighth victory that night as they trailed at the end of the first quarter 12-0 and early in the second period the score was 19-9 in favor of the Sailors.
But with Bob Stewart taking a pass from George Bishop and scoring, followed by Fred Frank's two points under the basket and points by Paul Salazar on a gallop into the basket; Stewart on a free throw, Frank Navarro on a five-foot set shot, Frank on a set and Navarro on another set shot the locals took the lead with the score board reading 22-19.
Early in the third period the Sailors recaptured the lead at 29-27, but Stewart put the locals out in front again on his set shot. Newport scored a field goal to go out in front again, but another rally from the Colonists gave them a 38-35 lead at the end of the third period.
Newport was never a serious threat in the final period. Paul Salazar took high point honors with 16 to recapture the honor of leading the Colonists in scoring in loop competition from exleader of one week, Stewart. Stewart hit for seven points Friday.
Anaheim attempted 63 shots and completed 21 for a field goal percentage mark of 33.3 while the Tars were attempting 49 and completing 15 for a mark of 37.5.

Little Beaver, miniature Mohawk Indian from Canada, is the idol of children and their elders throughout the USA and Canada because of his sensational ring performances. He wrestles like Don Eagle and Argentina Rocca rolled in one. Blond, fuzzy, Dangerous Dan Cupid is a 92 pound package of villainy.
The tag team match which will close the program, sends two rugged favorites, Let (Butch) Levy and Freddie McDaniels out against the ruthless tandem of Krippler Karl Davis and Ivan The Terrible. The latter weighs 325; Davis, 247. Levy scales 243, McDaniels, 232.
The team match is expected to be so rough that the OCAC asked the California State commission to assign big Al Billings as the referee. The program is to get under power at 8:30 with Paul Britton meeting Dennis Clary, onetime known as "Mr. California." Clary is fast gaining top favor in this section because of his science and clean-cut style.
