Ding Dong Dell— Shandon Driller Can Fish in Well SHANDON, Calif. — Joe Bisegilla was happy to strike water at 600 feet while drilling a well near here, but he was astonished to see fish come bubbling up too. The fish resemble miniature tuna, Bisegilla said today. He described them as about 1½ inches long and have small spikes instead of fins on their backs. He explained that his well lies near the San Andrea earthquake fault and the fish may come from an underground cavern formed there. WHITE There is nothing unusual about a U-shaped house, plan, but there is plenty of brainwork behind this beauty. It is the new ultra-modern home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ring at 420 Leonora st. Maybe you know the Rings, Mrs. Ring operates the Sybil Ring Starlet Batton school as a hobby, and she and daughter Rita actively participate in the parades so popular throughout the county. Ralph heads a newspaper agency. They are a hardworking, fun-loving family, and their home reflects their way of living to the last detail. INDOOR-OUTDOOR First there is the correlation between indoors and outdoors which accents fun in the sun. The generous 75x120 foot city lot is bounded at the back by a five-foot cement block wall attractively topped with tile. The U-outline of 2000 square feet of house encloses the remaining three sides of the property forming a fully protected and private central courtyard. This has become a turfed patio, the setting for barbecue, redwood and aluminum lounge furniture, and athletic equipment. The rustic texture of concrete blocks, stucco and redwood provides the perfect backdrop, enhanced at intervals by semi-tropical exotic shrubs. To fully enjoy California living at its finest, the Rings installed floor to ceiling sliding glass panels in the living room, dining area and lanai which overlook the patio. A generous overhang in the roof line regulates the amount of sun and shadow, and the interior decor takes its theme from the out-of-doors. Among the Arbor Vitae varieties are available ranging from the dwarf formal ones with gold tips on the twigs to the tall pyramid of the American Arbor Vitae. The Golden Column Arbor Vitae is a beautiful variety of medium height. Although our native Monterey cypress has become afflicted with pests, we can turn to another native from our own Santa Ana mountains, the Forbes cypress, which so far is free of the troubles besetting the Monterey. An improved variety known as the Tecate cypress is available. The Lawson cypress of our Pacific Northwest does well here and is usually planted in the lovely blue form. A number of other forms are available, some green with a gold tint. Among trees there are available besides the popular Deodar cedar, two other fine cedars, the Atlantic and the Lebanon, the latter halling from ancient Bible lands. Besides the above there are also some excellent pines, Podocarpus, the coast and mountain redwoods, Incense cedar, and others that do well here. All these evergreens are best planted at this time of year when they are more dormant than at other times. Field grown stock is available. Oysters and scallops are lazy members of the seafood world. In their native element they lie on one side, whereas most other bivalves live erect, standing on the edges of their shells. A generous overhang in the roof line regulates the amount of sun and shadow, and the interior decor takes its theme from the out-of-doors. UNINHIBITED SPACE A minimum of partitions as such gives a feeling of uninhibited space to the interior of the house. The entrance way is separated from the living room proper by corregated glass and a handsome flagstone planter. The full sweep of the long living room is interrupted at the far end most effectively by an angled fireplace island which forms a cozy dining room, adjoining the living room yet separate from it. The kitchen comes next at the bend of the "U," followed by a half bath and the Ring's version of the all-purpose family room which in this case takes the form of a lanail. Hardwood flooring has been used throughout the house with the exception of the lanai which is floored with cement at the level of the outdoor patio. By opening the sliding glass panel wall which faces the patio, the lanai can become part of the patio itself. It may also be screened off to adapt itself to the requirements of den or study. The knotty pine paneling, comfortable bamboo furniture and open brick fireplace lends atmosphere either way. A television set fits nicely into one corner.
