Although the Civil war ended officially with the surrender of General Robert E. Lee to General U. S. Grant at Appomattox court house, on Palm Sunday, April 9, 1863, a serious conflict based on malice and hatred between the opposition has continued right up to the present year and is slated to continue to brew for many more.
The opposition now is the Los Angeles Angels and the Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast Baseball league and their Civil War series for the championship of the Los Angeles City baseball title.
With Hollywood coming to beautiful La Palma park and Anaheim and with Los Angeles’ Angels training in near-by Fullerton the feud will certainly take on more fuel this season.
Old Stamosloss Hack has been picked by several different corners to take the championship this year, but Fred Haney and his brightly shining Stars will certainly have a lot to say and do about that.
Just about the happiest person in these parts these past few days has been and is Victorious Rudy who has been working harder than a whole army of Bees in trying to get a top-notch baseball club to train in his beautiful park.
Certainly all his efforts were rewarded when it was learned late last week that Hollywood would spring train in Anaheim, the place where the St. Louis Browns, Los Angeles Angels, Sacramento Solons and Seattle Rainiers have held camp at one time or another.
And one of the happiest persons with the camp being held in Anaheim this year was the attractive Mrs. Fred Haney. She was all smiles about the layout at La Palma park and how easy it would be to get here from the LA area and for some of the players such as Chuck Stevens, who live in near-by Long Beach.

Newport Harbor's Unbeaten Runner
Tomorrow afternoon the Anaheim Cohnist cross country team will travel to Newport Harbor for their third hop race of the year and they will be seeking their first victory of the season while the host Tars have lost to Orange and Fullerton, but defeated the Saints from Santa Ana.
Anaheim dropped their first loop contest to Huntington Beach and just last week they were scaled by the Indians of Fullerton although Anaheim had the individual winners in both the varsity and junior varsity class.
Dick Reed set a new course record in the Fullerton hills to win by a five yard margin while Bob Calvo took individual winning honors in the JV class.
Both will certainly have to hustle if they expect to defeat the ace Sailor harrier, Raymond Stufford who has yet to taste defeat from an opponent of the Sunset league.
Stafford is really just a class Bee runner, but he can beat anyone on his team by 15 seconds any day of the week and he has been kept on the varsity where he will likely remain throughout the major part of the track season. He will run the mile and 880 but when he drops down into the Bee class for the league and CIF competition he will run the 1320.
In the all-league track and field finals held at Newport last year Stafford ran out of the money in the 100 yard dash in the class Cee competition, but he came back later in the afternoon to place second in the 880 yard race being winner Gil Montoya who is the ace for the Huntington Beach Oilers this year.
Jimmy Vineyard and Charles Babbitt have been running two and three for Newport in their meets of late with Vineyard placing fifth against Fullerton and Orange and second against Santa Ana.
The course at Newport is not run over any hills, but instead is laid out over their track, their baseball diamond and surrounding flat area. The race is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. with some 30-odd runners participating in the mile and eight-tenths course.

Colonists Come from Behind to Gain 45-43 Victory Over Fullerton Tribe
Coming from behind late in the final period the Anaheim Colonist varsity basketball team squeaked by Fullerton's Braves 45-43 in a Sunset league game played in the Anaheim gym and by doing so climbed into third spot in the loop standings, pushing the Tribe down into fourth position.
Anaheim, who was on a losing streak of two games, although they led at the end of the first period 10-9, looked like they were surely going down to their third straight setback and second by the Fullerton Tribe Fullerton won the first round game 45-44 in an overtime period at Fullerton.
The Indians led at the end of the first half, 23-21, and at the end of the third 35-31, but Anaheim just wasn't to be counted out. They had to come up off the floor and even after the timer's gun had sounded Fullerton and Anaheim still were willing to play ball and they did too, for another agonizing few seconds.

Hits for Two
Bill Ames hit for two points, but Fullerton countered with two in speeding Webber, grabbed the ball and put it in to put the locals only one point behind the Braves.
Steinborn then put the locals out in front with a drive-in lay-up and increased the lead with a point from the free throw line. But the Indians hadn't quit yet.
Owens scored two points under the basket to tie up the game, then into the game came reserve Papose Bill Gunn who came into the first Fullerton-Anaheim game and won it for the Braves.
He scored on a drive-in to put the visitors out in front with less than four minutes left in the game. Webber scored on a set shot to retie the game and Ames put the locals out in front on an eight-foot set.
For the next few minutes the game turned into one big battle—Fullerton's eager Indiana trying to get the ball. They finally succeeded in tying up the ball and got to get a jump ball out of it.
Calls Time Out
Anaheim got the ball and immediately called time out with five seconds left in the game, but the timer pulled the trigger of his gun and the game seemed over. But it was far from over.
For the next minute officials, timer, players and fans were all over the court expressing their feelings about the game. Finally the officials decided the game had five seconds left to play and so play was continued.
Fullerton got their hands on the ball or rather Elvin Boyd did and he shot at the basket three times

Hits for Two
Bill Ames hit for two points, but Fullerton countered with two in the form of Leon Owen’s field goal. After that it was all Anaheim until the final minutes of the game.
Ames drove hard into the basket for two points and Ira Webber followed that up with a speedy dash down the court and a drive into the basket for a lay-up. But he missed it; however, Johnny Steinbom, who had been standing near the basket and watching the Hornets Get Stung By Tough Mounties
Fullerton’s Hornet basketball team finally met their waterloo last night in the Mt. San Antonio gym when the Mounties jumped all over the two-time Eastern Conference champs for a 49-46 victory—their first ever recorded over the Fullerton team in the series which started back in 1947.
The Mounties led at half time 24-27 and proved to be just a better defensive outfit than the Hornets were last night. As a result the San Bernardino Indians jumped back into a first place tie with the Hornets. Both teams will end their conference season against each other in San Bernardino.

Bee Hoopsters Progress with Game For 48-15 Rout of Fullerton Redskins
Getting better as the game progressed the Anaheim Colonist Bee basketball team rolled to its seventh straight victory as a result of their overpowering 48-15 rout of Fullerton's hapless Indians in the Anaheim gym late yesterday afternoon.
The victory was the Colonists 15th victory of the season against only three setbacks, but in loop competition it leaves them in first place, a game in front of runner-up Huntington Beach with just two more games scheduled for the season—with Newport Harbor now in third spot and Orange who is in a tie for last place with the Indians.
The game certainly didn't start out with a bang. It was more or less like one hugh sigh. Fullerton didn't score a field goal until early in the second quarter, but the local cagers weren't doing too much better.
Anaheim led the scoring by quarters, 6-2, 16-7, 29-12 and the final score of 48-15. Fullerton's 15 points were the fewest Anaheim had allowed to one of their opponents this year. The low prior to yesterday's game was the 20 hung up by Monrovia in this Bonita tourney.
