ON THE LAM ... with Jim Lamhofer A big hooyay for the Los Angeles city group athletic administration for finally opening the door to City-CIF playoffs each year in football, basketball, and baseball. Now a true Southern California high school champions can be determined such year in the major sports. Two years progressively-minded prep school authorities have been pleading for such a set-up. Considering the proximity of the two regimes, it was ridiculous to ever pretend they lived in separate worlds. Track and field has been the only sport in which CIF and city aces have fided each other, and then only in the state finals. And this is a product of revised policies of the last decade. All in all the trend is encouraging. It is breaking down short-sightedness, extreme conservatism, and downright stubbornness on the part of LA secondary school authorities, which was most discouraging. In order to pave the way for playoff with the CIF winners, the city will run its sports season entirely parallel with those of its surrounding neighbors. Historically the city has been spending on a screwball schedule in football from September to only expand the first of November, then basketball league play; running from the first of December to the middle of January to playing the sport coached by him. The whole business was still. It certainly would have cramped the style of the many fine all-around athletes the CIF had produced through the years. We have had our shape of such performers locally. An example is Dan Kraemer of the Fullerton high class of 1946, who hung up, during his prep days, the amazing record of 13 letters gained in five different sports. No Crew, Dee Basketball The above-listed feat becomes even more remarkable when it is pointed out that during Kraemer's freshman year there were no Crew or Dee basketball teams at Fullerton because of war conditions, and that he did not go out for football his senior year. As a former classmate of his, we recall the strenuous spring afternoons for Kraemer in which he would first whip through his track warm-up calisthenics, jog a little on the track, and then practice a few leaps at the high jump pit; then would dive in the pool, do a few practice laps, and splash through time trials and would wind up his labors by doubling his diamond uncle and taking in field and hitting practice. And he was 'a star competitor' in all three sports, something which athletic know-it-alls who may track and swimming cannot possibly mix, (because of the different muscles employed in each). Joe Louis, the ex-heavyweight champ, played his heat big-tall. He led the amateur team which includes Frank Stranahan with a peat 60. Frank had 71. Red Rhodes, Los Angeles. Santa Anita Presents Maturity as Richest Horse Race in World ARCADIA (P) — Santa Anita presents the fourth renewal of its Maturity tomorrow, an event modestly billed as the richest horse race in the world. The cast of thoroughbred performers is headed by the 1931 national champion, Counterpoint. Subject to decisions later today, here are the probable entries: C. V. Whitney's Counterpoint; W. C. Martin's Phil D. Brookfield farm's Intent; King-ranch's Black Douglas; To Market, owned by Sam A. Mason Jr. Wythe and May's Interpretation; Joe Himehoch's Lion; Charles E. Moore's Simonsez; Greentree stable's Big Stretch, and Mrs. Nato Goldstone's Gold Capitol. All are 4-year-olds, for the Maturity is a race set up exclusively for this age group. It was originated here in 1940 to give the new graduates from the 2-year-old ranks a chance at a fat stake before they launch into a season of engagements with the older, more seasoned handicap horse. Santa Anita Presents Maturity as Richest Horse Race in World Mature that greased an alktime bath of $203,700. As was anticipated, no less than 100 humorists mentioned that this was not hay. U.S.-Jersey Walcott's immediate future is world heavyweight champion to be discussed here tomorrow. It appeared the verdict would a return fight with Ezzar Charles. Walcott's manager, Felix B. chicchio, kicked up a verbal attack when he announced he had agreed tentatively to a title bout with Harry (Kid) Matthews in Vegas (Nev). Jim Norris, president of International Boxing club, said would host release Walcott from his contract with the IBC to get Charles a return match. Added Al Weill, the IBC match makers: "Walcott is going to fight Charles for the title first. If he doesn't, he'll be sued for every penny he owns." Norris is scheduled to get together here tomorrow with Bexchicchio and Charles' manager Jake Mintz and Tom Tannas. Born Norris said: "The only thing I'm interested in is Walcott's fight with Ezza Charles." All are 4-year-olds, for the Maturity is a race set up exclusively for this age group. It was originated here in 1940 to give the new graduates from the 2-year-old ranks a chance at a fat stake before they launch into a season of engagements with the older, more seasoned handicap horse. The world's richest race billing comes from the fact that it is just that. If 10 candidates go, the race will have a gross value of $168,750. The winner will draw down a minimum of $122,375. A year ago the prize was even larger. Great Circle was the victor, winning $144,225 net out of a Wrestling Tonight Mwy. 191 bet. Anaheim-N.A. ORANGE COUNTY A.C. Baron Leone vs. Dr. Lee Grable Danny Savich vs. Carrie Guzman Don Arnold vs. Butch Levy Ray Peret vs. Dennis Clary Baron Leone vs. 'The Eye' In OCAC Feature Matdom's Great "Eye" goes into ring combat tonight at the Orange County Athletic club to see what he can see about putting the spell of defeat on Baron Michele Leone in the top event of a four-bout program. The "Eye"—Dr. Lee Grable, hypnotist-wrestler—is a double-threat in the ring and against any opponent. Few fans and fewer opponents know exactly what he can do, either as a wrestler or as a hypnotist. Most opponents fear for the worst and the arrogant Baron may prove to be no different. Dr. Grable may be able to catch his spell on the long-haired, short-tempered Baron and then lay him like an Italian rug. But flat. He figures to be one of the most interesting, and perhaps most heroic attractions the arrogant Baron has been in at the OCAC. The wildest match of the night could be the scheduled three-fair encounter between Mexico's Canos los Guzman and the Salt Lake City ring rabblerouser, Danny Salvin. Powerful Butch Levy meets Don Arnold, San Diego strong man in the special. The 8:20 curtain raises two favorites, Dennie Clery and Ray Peret. (AP) — Hungry homers and last year's big winner today were chas- Cary Middlecoff and Jimmy K in the second round of the 100 Tucson Open golf tourney. Neither of the leaders was satisfied with the fifteenth-par 68s shot yesterday. Middlecoff was lucky. Clark, of Laguna Beach, was disgusted. He missed 5-inch putt on the last green. He wasn't nearly as disgusted Jimmy Demaret. The brilliant-barred Texan who plays out of needed 14 strokes to finish 113-yard, par five, 18th hole, drove five halls out of bounds tried to cut across a slight angle. Those waited strokes gave 23-45—78. Even so, he grinmed when he walked off the green and Mangrum, who took the share of prize money in is one of 10 tied for seventh with 68. He is as feared as the tourney started. But two strokes behind the runs with 67s are four lesser-pros, Frank Champ, Lake Lea, La., Doug Higgins, Fort Smith; Fred Hawkins, El Paso Max Evans, Detroit. Expected the 75-degree temples, wide fairways and top greens produced or broke equally low scores are expected today. Louis, the ex-heavyweight player, played his best big-time. Veyna had to hurry to edge out the fast closing Gene Winger, who came down the final stretch like a scared rabbit and for once he was wearing shoes. Veyna finished the race in 11:49 with Winger timed in 11:49, but really was closer than a whole 60 seconds back. Serratee of Race Surprise of the race was Sam Azzara who squaked by Bay Bokleman to nab the tenth spot in 11:51. Bokleman was given the time of 11:52. Although the junior varsity squad members ran in the same race as the varsity leather-junggers, they nevertheless were awarded winning positions, but kept their times in regard to the varsity finishers. "Which team do you feel most?" That question has been at Stengel every spring for years. And Casey's answer now has been "The Boston Sox. Who else?" But yesterday the 60-year skipper ignored the Red Soxpletely for the 1952 Am League race. "We should finish one three," he said. "I expect the most compete to come from Cleveland, C and Detroit." The Walcott's out Future Discussion AMI. Fla. (AP)—Jersey Joe McCott's manager, Felix Bodio, kicked up a verbal storm, he announced he had agreed lively to a title bout with (Kid) Matthews in Las New. Norris, president of the national Boxing club, said he has release McCott from contract with the IBC to give as a return match. This is scheduled to get tohere tomorrow with Booco and Charles' managers, Mintz and Tom Tannas. But said: only thing I'm interested Valcott's fight with Ezzard. After several minutes of running up and over railroad tracks, down a highway and through an orange grove, the tiring harriers reappeared on the Indian's reservation. As the runners hit the track for the final 400 yards Fullerton's Danny Doss was out in front with a lead of five yards over Anaheim's Reed who was, at that point, 20 yards in front of Fullerton's Jim Moore. Hitting the final stretch, Doss still led Reed by three yards, but when Coach Sam Keith gave Reed the word he immediately jumped out in front and won easily, going away with a good six yard margin over Doss in the time of 10:53.4 which was the fastest the course had been negotiated this year. Cecil Veyna was the runner-up to Reed for the Colonists, but he was only seventh in the field that Harry Heilman, Paul Waner Selected For Baseball’s Hall of Fame Spot NEW YORK (AP)—For the second straight year power has overshadowed pitching prowess in selections for baseball’s Hall of Fame. The nation's baseball writers reached into each of the major leagues today for the latest additions to the shrine at Coopers-town, N.Y. They honored the late Harry Hellmann, a great righthanded hitter for Detroit in the '20s, and Paul (Big Poison) Waner, who came along a decade later to belt out base-hits for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Two sluggers—Mel Ott of the New York Giants and Jimmy Foxx of the Philadelphia Athletics—were last year's nominees and no one was picked in 1950. The last pitcher to reach the Hall of Fame was Mordecai (Three-Finger) Brown, picked in 1949. However, if this year's voting is Although the junior varsity squad members ran in the same race as the varsity leather-jungers, they nevertheless were awarded winning positions, but kept their times in regard to the varsity finishers. Fullerton won the JV race 27-20, although the Colonists had the individual winner—this time in the person of Bud Calva who hasn't ran in a race for several months. He scooted across the finish line in 11:54 with Bruce Horner right on his heels in 11:56. Erlin Eberhard placed seventh in 12:29 while Jerry Stagner finished in 12:50 and Don Davis in 12:56. Charles Flynn finished the race in 13:26, but many, many more trailed to the end of the line. Anaheim is supposed to host the Newport Sailors Thursday, but due to having no home course; they will probably journey to meet the Tars on their own hill and dale track. Harry Heilman, Paul Waner Selected For Baseball’s Hall of Fame Spot famous "big and little poison" team of the Pirates, played in the majors for two decades. He joined the Pirates in 1926 after-breaking in with San Francisco in 1923. He played with the Pirates through 1940 and then did service with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Boston Braves and New York Yankees before hanging up his glove in 1945. The elder Waner now 50, and a resident of Sarasota, Fla., led National League hitters three times, hitting .380 in 1927, .362 in 1924 and .373 in 1936. He was the National League's most valuable player in 1927. Kansas State May Lose Two What about Boston? Boudreau Predict High Finish for Boston Red Sox BOSTON (AP)—Although he counting on slugger Ted Will for the 1952 campaign, MaLou Boudreau still predicts a two-three finish for his B Red Sox. The new Boston pilot left doubt that he has written off sockets $100,000-a-year star faces recall to active duty; the U.S. Marine air arm. "The loss of Williams defies is a big one," Boudreau told Boston baseball writers after dinner last night. "But I was say we will definitely finish two or three—and we have eyes on the No. 1 spot." In New York, Williams nothing definite has been deas to whether he will take in spring practice before to his physical. "Any announcement concemency my connection with the team come from Red Sox officials said. Tommy Holmes promised in his first full season at the No. of the Braves "we won't be ooffer excuses. However, if this year's voting is a barometer of things to come, one of the pitching stars of the modern era probably will be honored in the near future. That is Dizzy Dean, iron-winged righthander of the St. Louis Cardinals in the pre-World War II days, who was one of the four highest men in the balloting. A total of 234 votes were cast with 75 per cent—176—heeded for election. Heilmann with 203 and Waner with 195 got in easily. Next in line were Bill Terry, former first baseman and manager of the New York Giants, and the fabulous Dean. Terry received 155 votes, Dean 152. The sentiment turned back to the hitters with Al Simmons, the oldtime Athletics' star, and Bill Dickey, the New York Yankee's brilliant catcher, following in that order. Heilmann died of lung cancer last July 9 at the age of 56. A native of San Francisco, Heilmann was a powerful six-footer who starred for the Tigers between 1914 and 1929. He won the American League batting championship four times—hitting .394 in 1921, .403 in 1923, .393 in 1925 and .398 in 1927. He had a lifetime average of .342. Waner, also an outfielder, who with brother Lloyd formed the Kansas State May Lose Two Frosh Finds MANHATTAN, Kas. (AP)—Kansas State, which has been booming in basketball on a combination of excellent coaching and good recruiting, may lose a couple of its frosh finds. The Kansas State Athletic Council yesterday declared intelligible two former Omaha high school players after the University of Nebraska said the boys had been recruited illegally. The players were identified as Stanley Schaetzle and David Bell. Kansas State is rated No. 2 nationally in the Associated Press poll. The Wildcats went to the NCAA finals last year but lost to Kentucky. Coach Jack Gardner said in his opinion the college was not in violation of the recruiting rule, "but an investigation is being made and it is up to the conference to decide." The specific charge was that Kansas State violated a new Big Seven rule which prohibits "personal solicitation of athletes off the campus by members of the athletic staff or representatives of the athletic staff." SORTS Red Sox Fail To Scare Old Casey Stengel NEW YORK (UP)—Casey Stengel, for the first time since he became manager of the world champion New York Yankees, has at his fear—and respect—for the once murderous Boston Red Sox. "Which team do you fear the out?" That question has been hurled by Stengel every spring for four years. And Casey's answer, until now, has been "The Boston Red Sox Who else?" But yesterday the 60-year-old stripper ignored the Red Sox comely for the 1932 American league race. "We should finish one-two-for," he said. "I expect the most competition come from Cleveland, Chicago and Detroit." What about Boston? "I don't know a thing about them except that they lost Bobby Cerr, Junior Stephens finished season crippled, and they may be Ted Williams to the Marines." If Williams stays around—let say, until September—the Red Sox will be dangerous. If he is early... Bill Ames, Dave Moody and Joe Clark Lead Colonist Basketball Members All alone in fourth spot in the Sunset league standings the Anaheim varsity basketball squad took leave of the loop competition and off the record, seems to be stepping out of the frying pan into the cooking fire. They haven't fared too well this season in league competition, although they have three more games to go and they could end up in third spot and even in second, but the way they played against the Huntington Beach Oilers Tuesday night, that seems rather remote. Today at 2 p.m. the Colonists took on Redondo in the first round of the Beverly Hills annual cage tournament. If they won that game they were scheduled to tangle with the winner of the Twenty-Nine Palms-Compton game tonight at 7:45 at the Beverly Hills swim gym. The tourney is a single elimination affair and if the Colonists lose to the Sea Hawks who are now in second spot in the Bay League, they will come home to rest up for their final loop games with Fullerton, Newport Harbor and Orange. A look at the Anaheim varsity basketball book finds Bill Ames still leading the point makers with a high of 131 points for the season's 17 games which gives him an average per game of 8.1. Runner-up to Ames is Dave Moody who has potted 101 points for an average of 5.9. Other leaders in the scoring department are Johnny Steinborn, 99 (8.2); Gayle Herbel, 90 (5.2) and Ira Webber, 85 (6.0). Leading the scoring at the free throw line is Moody with 27 completions out of 48 attempts for a percentage mark of 56.3. Herbel has the same percentage mark as a result of his 22 attempted shots and 18 hits. Webber trails Moody from the gratis line with 23. Ames and Kolb with 15 each and Steinborn with 13. Dennis Ryan has 13 points scored from the line. Sporting the best field goal percentage mark again is little Joe Clark with a mark of 80.0 as a result of his five attempted goals and four connections. Dean Philpott is next with his percentage mark of 42.9. Mad Dog Leo Makes Debut At Speedway Len (Mad Dog) Briethaupt; the Long Beach speed merchant, makes his debut into the cooking fire...
