For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in Mercy.—Psa. 103:8. MEMORY LANE—Just a year ago today the Yanks hit the main Red Defense lines in the Korean "yo-yo war." ... Numbing cold gripped most of the United States on the day Adolf Schoepe announced that Kwikset donated the former La Palma school as a Anaheim Youth Center ... Raymond Pierce, a 12-year-old lad, was cut and bruised when he was knocked from his bicycle by a car driven by Joe Ellis ... Rural school areas voted down unification of the Anahi district ... Anaheim was the wettest spot in the county, getting 1.04 inches in a storm that sent the season's total to 4.56 ... Clinton Flynn stated that Anaheim Ikes would sponsor the national casting tournament at the Pomona Fair grounds pool ... It was a son for Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kirchner ... Harry F. Gray, 75, died after an extended illness ... Jimmy Smith's Fullerton college swimmers drop- British Vice Consul Frank Taylor Puzzled About Change of Weather ST. LOUIS UP—The "Hell Hole of St. Louis" slipped right up on British Vice Consul Frank Taylor today. If the friendly 38-year-old bachelor was aware the foreign secretary in London thought St. Louis is a hell hole, in a sense, along with Jibuti, Madagascar and Borneo it has slipped his mind until— He came across an article in a current magazine (Look). It reported St. Louis, Houston and New Orleans were on the British Foreign office's list of particularly disagreeable posts. At first Taylor was skeptical. After all St. Louis is a prosperous, industrial city of some 1,600,000 with its share of cultural background. So he checked the files. And there the three cities were on the list, but in a half-hearted way. They aren't considered first class hell holes by the British Foreign office. First class hell holes call for only 18 months of duty instead of the normal three year stint and time and one-half is given toward retirement. In the three American cities the diplomats get only time and one-half on pensions. "Living here certainly wouldn't affect your health and morale at the moment," Taylor said. "The only thing is that in the long run such changeable weather might affect your health; therefore the pension help." To illustrate an out-and-out hell hole Taylor took Kuwait, his last post where he came out a sick man. Kuwait, at the tip of the Persian Gulf between Iraq and Iran, is about the size of Connecticut and has a population of 200-600. All drinking water is imported into Kuwait in tank ships and hauled overland by donkeys. "It's straight desert on a floating sea of off," said Taylor, "and it's hotter than blazes. Sometimes it reaches 120 degrees in the shade." But back to the "Hell Hole of St. Louis," Taylor, who has been here 18 months, scratched around for the foreign office's reasons. He stuck with the weather. "For example," he said, "I played golf in my shirt sleeves Saturday. Sunday I went to the zoo in a suit and yesterday I had to bundle up in a duffle coat overcoat." the county, getting 1.04 inches in a storm that sent the season's total to 4.56. Clinton Flyna stated that Anaheim Ikes would sponsor the national casting tournament at the Pomona Fair grounds pool. It was a son for Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kirchner. Harry F. Gray, 75, died after an extended illness. Jimmy Smith's Fullerton college swimmers dropped a 49-26 decision to Hank Chapman's barnstorming Texans. That was the news you were reading a year ago today. SUCCESS—Marie Wilson, Anaheim's gift to Hollywood, radio and TV, will fly to Texas this week to put in an eight-hour day as a secretary at the March of Dimes headquarters at Ft. Worth. Her pay will be $5000 which will be turned over to the anti-polio drive. Good publicity, no? THEY TELL ME—That Floyd Robert (Bobby) Rose' number is up. He is to take his pre-induction physical Tuesday. This was to have been his year. He had inked a Washington Senators baseball contract. They say that his brother will be back in the Navy in March. That was when Billy Ross had figured to do his spring training at Vie Rendy's La Palma park. They say that Paul Czapla really can do things to victuals to make them palatable. I am told Mary Flynn is one of the best tennis prospects ever developed in Anaheim. POLIQ—Today, January 30, is the birthday of the late Franklin D. Roosevelt who overcame the handicap of polio to rise to the highest office of the United States. It is through the cooperation of those kind hearted, gentle people who live in cities like Anaheim, that the crippling effect of this dreaded disease is gradually being overcome. DAWGS — Anaheimers have often wondered why dogs are permitted to have "the run of the town." Dogs are wonderful pets. Traffic Safety Talk Given at Kiwanis Meet The regular weekly meeting of the Anaheim Kiwanis club was held at the Elks club Tuesday noon, President A. J. Schutte presiding. The speaker of the day was Captain R. L. (Cubi) Morris of the State Highway Patrol whose topic was "Traffic Safety." He was introduced by Ralph Matters, program chairman. Captain Morris stated that the Highway Patrol is very anxious to impress upon the individual automobile driver his responsibility for traffic law observation and to observe just as much courtesy while driving as he does in other walks of life. He also stated that during the first six months of 1951, more out-of-state cars came into California than for the whole of the year 1950. Because they come from states which have different traffic laws than California is a contributing factor to our high accident rate. He praised the program now being conducted by our schools in teaching the youngsters how to drive safely and prophesied that the results would be apparent in the next few years in cutting the accident rate. In other states this program has reduced accidents 42 per cent. It was announced that Lieutenant Governor J. Franklin Sullivan of Division Four would make his official visit to the club next Tuesday. Hoag Hospital Construction Open for Tours Seeing is believing and as Confucius said, "A picture is worth a thousand words." So the 30 or more members of the Newport it reaches 120 degrees in the shade." But back to the "Hell Hole of St. Louis," Taylor, who has been here 18 months, scratched around for the foreign office's reasons. He stuck with the weather. "For example," he said, "I played golf in my shirt sleeves Saturday. Sunday I went to the zoo in a suit and yesterday I had to bundle up in a duffle coat (overcoat to you) because it was cold and snowing. Now wouldn't you say that was a bit of weather?" Defense Orders, Gov't Jobs Swell State Income Preliminary estimates by the Research Department of the California State Chamber of Commerce show that income payments to individuals totalled $21,000,000,000 in 1951, or were 13.3 per cent larger than during 1950. During 1951, California payrolls and incomes expanded at a higher rate than over the nation as a whole. This was due primarily to the concentration in this state of some 14.2 per cent of the prime contract awards for defense mobilization and to rapid expansion of civilian employees of government in various military installations. Wages and salaries in 1951 rose by approximately 19 per cent to a total of $14,000,000,000. The 1951 per capita income was $1,918 or nearly 10 per cent higher than the 1950 per capita income of $1,-751. In 1950 California ranked sixth among the 10 leading states in highest per capita income which was 22 per cent above the national average of $1,436. Other leading states in 1950 in order were: Deleware, New York, Illinois, Connecticut, Nevada, California Pennsylvania, Washington, Massachusetts and Michigan. highest office of the United States. It is through the cooperation of those kind hearted, gentle people who live in cities like Anaheim, that the crippling effect of this dreaded disease is gradually being overcome. DAWGS — Anaheimers have often wondered why dogs are permitted to have "the run of the town." Dogs are wonderful pets, but they should be taken care of. Just the other day, three-year-old Linda Denny was bitten by a stray dog. That's inexcusable! Anaheim is a city where dogs are a traffic meme. Something should be done to overhaul outmoded ordinances and to make Anaheim safe for kids to play and grow up in. TOP SECRET — The shift of California's 40th division to the "Korean police action zone" might not be unexpected. Soldiers are trained to do battle, but why was the Defense Department so underhanded in making the shift. Promises were made that California's 40th Infantry Division—including Anaheim's Own, Co K—would not be sent to Korea. Letters from the soldiers intimated that they were being shuttled to the fighting front. Even as these reports trickled home, top brass denied it. "It's no secret that our boys are in Korea," one mother said, "Almost everyone knows that they've been sent over a long time ago." Strange, indeed, is the reluctance of some parents to discuss the shift to the fighting front. They preferred to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals against their loved ones. That, friends, is the sad commentary on the transfer of the 40th to the fighting front. Hoag Hospital Construction Open for Tours Seeing is believing and as Confucius said, "A picture is worth a thousand words." So the 30 or more members of the Newport Harbor Optimists club, under their president, Tex Holmes, went to see and get a picture of what's going on at the Hoag Memorial Hospital, Presbyterian. This was Jan. 28 when the regular luncheon-meeting of the club was held at Tom Norton's Bay Shores cafe. After luncheon, instead of listening to speeches, the group adjourned to the hospital site and took a Cook's Conducted Tour of the building. Their guide was Ed Mahl, superintendent of construction for the hospital. He told them everything they wanted to know, from the fact that the main building was 356 feet long—that there were over 100 rooms in all—the would be 75 beds and four operating rooms, and in an emergency, the hospital could handle 100 patients. All 30 optimists were impressed with their visit and agreed the Americans are free men and should be treated as such. Military brass should play fair with the wives, sweethearts and parents of the men who will distinguish themselves in the field. NITESAPSULE — It's easy to get along with some people if you can stand to listen to their endless boasting. Employers Warned On Tax Returns Thomas H. Kuchel, chairman of the Franchise Tax board, warned that on or before Feb. 15, all employers must file information returns, Forms 599, with the State Franchise Tax board for single employees who earn $2,000 or more and married persons whose income is $3,500 or more. These forms as well as Summary Form 596 may be secured from the Los Angeles office or the Board at 286 State building. trip was worthwhile. The trip is in line with a plan for a series of visits by service club members and others interested. It is only the beginning of many and already other organizations are planning for the same tour. The building is now almost entirely roofed over, clean-up of the interior is in its initial stages, and there is a good opportunity to make a careful and personal inspection. A meteorite weighing 36½ tons was discovered in Greenland in 1895, and brought to the United States by Robert Peary, discoverer of the North Pole.
