For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. —John 20:29. IT HAPPENED—Just a year ago Gen. Douglas MacArthur was confident of Allied victory after his ninth trip to Korea ... That was when the wage-price freeze went into effect ... Dr. B. D. Roberts was seriously injured in an automobile collision ... Anaheim raingauges registered .07 to bring the season total to 3.54 inches to date ... Foster Lamm announced a $3.00 dividend on Southern County Bank stock ... Mrs. Florence Williams told police that her purse containing $150 was taken from her parked car ... Donald Resler and Barbara June Freeze got a marriage license ... Mrs. Nancy Evans; an Anaheimer of 30-years standing, died ... W. D. Grafton resigned his post as chairman of the Planning Commission. Joe Thompson succeeded him. Al Rutilel, J. E. Schumacher, Melbourne Gauer and Ralph Summers are members of the board. Coal Operators Find Fault with Mine Safety Bill WASHINGTON (AP)—A spokesman for the Kentucky Coal Operators charged today that the "principal design" of a pending federal mine safety bill is to "eliminate small producers throughout the United States." The Kentuckian, O. S. Batten, told a Senate subcommittee the legislation aimed at putting teeth into federal mine inspection law was drafted to "aid in the organization and unionization of non-union coal mines." He said the Kentucky Coal Operators are "definitely against" the bill introduced by Senator Neely (D-WVa). Batten said it is impossible to "legislate safety." The mine safety hearing, now in its third day, reaches a cilmax later today with John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers, scheduled to testify. World's Record-Holding Hiccuper Still in Action LOS ANGELES (AP)—Frail Jack O'Leary now tips the scales at 78 pounds, the least he has weighed since he started hiccuping more than three and a half years ago. Resler and Barbara June Freeze got a marriage license... Mrs. Nancy Evans; an Anaheimer of 30-years standing, died... W. D. Grafton resigned his post as chairman of the Planning Commission. Joe Thompson succeeded him. Al Ruitcel, J. E. Schumacher, Melbourne Gauer and Ralph Summers are members of the board. NEWSPAPERS—"Want to see an old newspaper?" Al Keenig asked... "Sure. How old?"... "Oh, about a 118 years," the octogenarian replied... That reply brought skeptical looks from the skeptical Anaheimers who like the man from Missouri had to be shown... A grin brightened his face and his eyes twinkled as he reached into his coat pocket to pull out an envelope... "Now, don't handle it like last night's Gazette," he warned as he produced a copy of the Tuesday, Sept. 3, 1833, eddition of The Sun. The 8% x 11% inch, three-column four-page paper actually was a first edition of the old New York Sun. PRESS NOTES—Anaheim's INS correspondent, Howard Handleman, is doing a great job in covering the Korean conflict which he termed a "Yo-Yo" war... Vern Thomas, the man who once kept Anaheim presses rolling is now working at Port Hueneme... Clyde Wells, who also was a stereotyper-pressman here in Anaheim is now head of the Ellay Times stereotype department... CORONER'S CORNER — The State Highway Commission is making a survey to decide whether traffic signals at Lemon and Orangethorpe are needed. With Anaheim's new Northrop plant in operation, signals at the "coroner's corner" are an absolute necessity. Marion Wolfe, a Placentia school marm, could testify to that, even though she cheated the coroner at the corner a few years ago. PERSONALITIES — Bernard The above drawing shows the various formations Steele Petroleum Co., geologists expect to encounter in searching for oil frm Anaheim's north-end industrial area. Their geological estimates place any likely pool of production-quantity oil at below 6000 feet. The arrows at the left, however, indicate an area where oil may be found. The well is straight down 1850 feet, then whipstocked toward the city. Steele Petroleum Co. officials reported today that the drillers have reached 3650 feet, the drill just biting into the Pico formation which runs from 3500 to 4500 feet. State Candidates To Be Given Chance To Say Yes or No World's Record-Holding Hiccuper Still in Action LOS ANGELES UP—Frail Jack O'Leary now tips the scales at 78 pounds, the least he has weighed since he started hiccuping more than three and a half years ago. The former market manager weighed 135 pounds when the world's longest hiccup attack started June 13, 1948. Since that date, O'Leary has been shaken by the spasms at the rate of at least one per second. Except for two brief respites while he was in Phoenix, Ariz. His mother, Mrs. Margaret O'Leary, said his falling weight is due to his restricted diet. For breakfast, she said, he eats toast and a glass of hot water. Lunch: Peas or carrots and a glass of hot water. Supper: Peas and carrots toast and a glass of hot water. This is all he is able to eat she declared. And he regurgitates all food after it has been in his stomach 20 minutes. Whatever nourishment he gets is obtained during that brief time. O'Leary, 26, dropped two pounds while delivering mail during the Christmas holidays. He worked for three weeks. His mother drove their car and he delivered packages. Mrs. O'Leary hopes to take her son to New York City, where an anonymous doctor has offered to treat him free, she said. A promoter proposed to make a movie of the hiccuper's life, she added. She turned it down upon learning that the promoter wanted to make the script a comedy. More than 200 doctors have attempted to help O'Leary. He has tried hundreds of remedies. More than 20,000 letters have been sent to his home at 4044 Garden ave., Los Angeles, most of them containing suggested cures. None have worked. The hiccups started after an appendix rupture. PERSONALITIES — Bernard Couch is seeing the country as one of those itinerant printers. Since graduating from Fullerton J.C., he's worked in Anaheim, Fullerton, Montana and St. Louis. He recently wrote his college prof—Ralph A. J. Porter—that he's seeing the country as a journeyman printer . . . Eddie Portillo is one of those good natured individuals a guy likes to have as a friend . . . Newell Christensen, the Anaheim rancher, was quite a bassoonist. He really is a talented musician . . . Edward Negrette, former Anaheim market operator, won a battle against red tape when he opened his "Papa and Mama" neighborhood grocery store in Fullerton . . . Ralph Smedley, founder of the Toastmasters club, whom you'll recall as the former Santa Ana YMCA secretary, got himself written up in one of those "hip-pocket" magazines. Fifteen years ago, the Gazetteer told Smedley that the Toastmasters' would make him famous. He laughed at the prediction . . . The Riutcel Brothers—Lloyd and Wallace—have added another furniture store to their chain. The newest addition is an exclusive Maple Shop in Whittier. Albert Riutcel, now retired, got the boys started here in Anaheim. NITECAPSULE—It's easier to quit drinking, if you don't start. Steele Petroleum Co. officials reported today that the drillers have reached 3650 feet, the drill just biting into the Pico formation which runs from 3500 to 4500 feet. State Candidates To Be Given Chance To Say Yes or No SACRAMENTO (P) — Prospective presidential candidates will be given the chance to say yes or no to the placing of their names on California's June 3 primary election ballot. Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan said today he intends to wire notifications to all persons for whom primary slates are drafted. Official consent of a presidential candidate is not required in California. However, his repudiation of a proposed ticket of national convention delegates will keep it off the ballot. The law provides that a convention slate may be sponsored either by the presidential candidate to which it is to be pledged or by a state-wide campaign committee not repudiated by him. As a matter of precedent, Jordan notified General Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo in 1948 that a Southern California Republican group proposed to enter a presidential ticket in his behalf. MacArthur replied he was not a candidate and would not authorize use of his name. It's still too early for any filings for this year's primary. There is the possibility of at least five tickets. Republican regulars favor a slate committed to Governor Warren's favorite son candidacy, but anti-Warren party members are working for a delegation headed by Congressman Thomas H. Werdel of Bakersfield. In addition, ex-Governor Harold Stassen of Minnesota has said he may enter the California primary.
