It is interesting to note that mention mentioned above and over Giles Miller, new Dallas owner of the former New York Yankee pro football franchise has solved one of the major problems confronting him with the transfer.
How could he bring the New Englandish team nickname to Dallas? Yankees? In Texas?
But diplomatically Miller has selected a new name for his adopted charges. They will be known as the Dallas Rangers—a good Texas name if there ever was one.
From his feelings as quoted in the public prints this week, Jersey Joe Waleot is a realist—he does not expect at 38, to remain heavyweight champion for very long.
This can be inferred from his statements that he feels a champion is entitled to a warmup bout before risking his title. It took old Joe a long, long time to reach the top, and now he wants to scoop up all the riches and stay up there as long as he can.
That is only natural, especially considering Joe's background of poverty and the large family he has to care for and take into consideration when planning for the future.

That is only natural, especially considering Joe's background of poverty and the large family he has to care for and take into consideration when planning for the future.
But Joe, why haven't you taken those warmup bouts before this—right after your late-summer exhibition tour? The hour is now late! Also, you should have made a good part of your "mint" by now from that exhibition tour.
The most inane character of the whole muddled heavyweight and light-heavyweight picture appears to be Jack Hurley, manager of Seattle's heralded Harry "Kid" Matthews.
Matthews and Hurley screamed long and loud for a title go with lightheavy champ Joey Maxim. They said Maxim was ducking Matthews because he was afraid of him, and that Matthews would probably never get the title chance he "so richly deserves."
Perhaps prompted by these castigations, Maxim and his manager, Jack Kearns, offered Hurley and Matthews a title bout under the standard financial split arrangements.
Hurley bellied that Matthews and he had been "insulted" by the terms offered, and that they would not even consider them.
And now Matthews and Hurley say they expect to get a heavy-weight title fight with Walcott ahead of both Ezzard Charles and Rocky Marciano, the two logical heavyweight challengers. How they deserve such a fight chance is apparently a product of the weird calculations of Mr. Hurley.

THEY'LL MOVE THE YANKEES TO DIXIE—New owners of New York Yankee professional football team are Giles Crawford and Connell R. Miller, his brother, of Dallas, Tex. The National Football league team was purchased by the Millers and other named interests for a reported $300,000 from Ted Collins. Storm Slated to Hit OCAC Arena Friday Night
Boy Scouts of America and carrier boys from various county daily newspapers will sit in on the wrestling "gigantic" at the Orange County Athletic club tomorrow night when Great Mr. Moto, self-styled "greatest Japanese wrestler in all Asia", attempts to match his ruthless "Japanese Siceper" hold with the speed and daring of Carlos Guzman, Mexican matmaster.
Two Garden Grove Scout troops, No. 71 and the "Demos" will attend as special guests of promoter Sybil Willis.
The match featuring Mr. Moto and Guzman originally was scheduled last week but the program was called off because of uncertain highway travel and a reported threatening storm, which was to follow the heavy rainfall of the past week.
OCAC officials say that the storm will hit the highway arena Friday night but it won't be rain, it will be when Guzman charges into the 240-pound Japanese championship.
Phoenix Open Starts with Large List of Up and Coming Golfers
PHOENIX UP—It's up to the old guard of the nation's golfers to regain the limelight as the annual $10,000 Phoenix Open gets underway today — the fourth tournament on the 1952 winter trail.
Two events have been won by newcomers to golf fame. Ted Kroll of New Hartford, N.Y., won the $10,000 San Diego Open last weekend, and Tommy Bolt of Durham, N.C., grabbed the rich $17,500 Los Angeles Open.
The old guard, represented by colorful Jimmy Demaret of Ojal, Calif., moved in once. Demaret won Bing Crosby's $10,000 tournament at Pebble Beach, Calif.
Today 130 or more players tee off at the Phoenix Country club, a par 36-35—71 test over 6578 yards.
Included is Lew Worsham, a comparative old timer who dazzled the galleries a year ago with a course record breaking 63 on the final day and a 72-hole total of 272. Worsham, U.S. Open champion in 1947, had only moderate success so far this year. But then, he went into the Phoenix Open with the same record a year ago.
Kroll finished the San Diego Open with a 276, 12 strokes under par. The Phoenix course is much the same type as the San Diego Country club layout.
Jaunty Demaret has quite an affection for the local course. He won the event in 1949 and 1950. In winning the Crosby event and finishing as runnerup to Kroll at San Diego, he served notice that he is on his game.
Most of the other familiar figures of the sport are here, including Lloyd Mangrum, Dutch Harrison, Lawson Little, who placed second to Worsham here last winter; Jim Ferrier and Cary Middlecoff. The latter two tied in the invitational 36-hole pro-amateur meet at Palm Springs en route from San Diego.
Also eligible after successful qualifying were three Negro players, pros Ted Rhodes and Bill Spiller and Eural Clark, amateur, all of Los Angeles.
Joe Louis, who spearheaded a successful move to gain entries for Negroes in PGA co-sponsored events, failed to qualify.

Scandals of Basketball Continue to Unfold as Cincinnati University Promoter Is Being Held as Briber
NEW YORK (P)—The basketball scandals, which have been running for a year and a week, today had entangled eight colleges, 32 players, one official and 25 fixers and material witnesses.
The list of schools was increased by one yesterday and one was added to the group of material witnesses when Sam D. Feinberg, 39, former Cincinnati sports promoter, was held in $10,000 bond as a would-be briber of two University of Cincinnati players.
The Cincinnati players, however, were praised in general sessions court for turning down the bribes. They were Alvin Rubenstein and Jack Laud.
A sworn statement read by Assistant District Attorney Vincent A. G. O'Connor said Feinberg asked Rubeinstein and Laub to shave points several times during the 1948-49 and 49-50 seasons.
Feinberg, the statement said, also agreed to put up the money so his half-brother, Saul, could fix a Kentucky game on the west coast during the 1948-49 season. The alleged fix, however, fell through.
Saul Feinberg is one of the 13 alleged fixers under indictment for fixing games. Another, Sol Rappaport, a salesman, pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiracy and faces a possible maximum sentence up to three years.
Henry E. Poppe, former Manhattan College co-captain, also pleaded guilty to conspiracy. Poppe and Rappaport were charged with attempting to bribe Junius Kellogg, Manhattan negro star.
It was Kellogg who told authorities the two offered him a bribe.
CINCINNATI (P)—The athletic director at the University of Cincinnati says the school allowed Sam Feinberg, a private promoter, to handle part of its home basketball games a few years ago because "he afforded us a place to play."
Charles Mileham said Feinberg promoted UC home games in downtown Music Hall prior to the construction of the Cincinnati Garden.
He asserted he knew nothing about Feinberg recruiting players for the university. The statement in court in New York was that Feinberg interested himself directly and indirectly in development of the team and recruiting players.
"Sam gave us the opportunity of playing good teams that we couldn't have played in our own gym," Mileham said. U.C.'s own gym is small.

Henry E. Poppe, former Manhattan College co-captain, also pleaded guilty to conspiracy.
Poppe and Rappaport were charged with attempting to bribe Junius Kellogg, Manhattan negro star.
It was Kellogg who told authorities the two offered him a bribe in a game against DePaul of Chicago, Dec. 16.
Kellogg's action set off the investigation that has led to the sentencing of 19 players and two fixers. Under indictment are five players and 13 alleged fixers. Two other alleged fixers and eight material witnesses also have been indicted. And eight players out of New York's jurisdiction also have been involved.
Colleges drawn into the scandal include CCNY, Long Island U., Manhattan, and New York U., all of New York City; Bradley, Kentucky; Toledo and Cincinnati.

Top-Notch Thriller Scheduled Tonight
In Fullerton’s Basketball Gym Between Champion Hornets, San Bernardino at 8
Off their season and conference records so far turned in, the two battling each other tonight should produce one terrific ball game, the likes which have never been seen in these parts for many years.
Fullerton junior college and San Bernardino tangle with each other tonight in Fullerton’s basketball gym at 8 in the top Eastern Conference battle of the year. A city league game will start at 6:30 to try and spread out the arrival of the crowd which will, in all probability, force the closing of the gym shortly after 7:30.
The reason for the large turnout is the result of the two teams possessing such top-notch talent and win-loss records as well as presenting such a high scoring game when ever they play.
The Hornets from Fullerton have won the conference title the past two years and are now undefeated, seeking their third straight under the leadership of Alex Ornalev, who has been on

San Berdoo’s Indians have one of the highest scoring teams in the Southland. In conference competition they are averaging 76 points a game; however, Fullerton is holding their opposition to a mere average output of 48 points a game while scoring on the average of 67 points a game.
The Indians have the two leading scorers of the loop on their team, forwards Clyde Maxim from Indiana and Tom Williams from Colton high school who last year made the all-conference first team as well as the all-Compton and all-Chaffey tourney all-star teams.
He set a conference record by scoring 40 points in one game. He is averaging 29 points a game while Maxim is "only" averaging 21 points a game.
Both teams use the fast-break style of play and as a result, the game between the two schools usually produces a rough, high scoring game.
Two years ago Fullerton went through the conference schedule unbeaten. Last year the Yellow Jackets lost only one game—that one to San Berdoo which ended up in a brawl.
Harry Matthews, Leading Contender For Title, Under Pressure to Fight
WASHINGTON (AP) — Harry Matthews, a leading light heavyweight contender, today was under Congressional pressure to sign for a title fight with champion Joey Maxim.
But Matthews' manager said in Seattle they are after bigger game—heavyweight champion Joe Walcott.
Senator Cain (R-Wash) said unless Matthews accepts a "generous" International Boxing Club offer to fight Maxim; he (Cain) may withdraw his Senate resolution designed to force the match.
Cain explained that when he and Senator Welker (R-Iraho) introduced the unusual resolution last year they honestly felt the IBC was discriminating against Matthews by refusing to give him a chance at the title.
The resolution urged an investigation of IBC as a monopoly "for refusing legitimate contenders an opportunity to fight."
Cain told a hastily-called ring-side news conference at a local fight arena that IBC has made Matthews a generaus offer (20 percent) but Jack Hurley, manager, turned it down without explanation.
In Seattle, Hurley thanked the senators "for their interest in Harry's career," but said his big goal now is a match with Walcott.
Cain said:
"The champion is begging the challenger to enter the ring with him. If such an offer has ever been made by a champion before, Welker and I are not aware of it.
"If Matthews does not take advantage of his present chance to become the title holder, there may be nothing that Welker and I can do to help him in the future."
