Anaheim Gazette WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1952 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Social and Club Activities Pat Terrebonne — 2206 High School P-TA Witnesses Driver Training Program at Last Night Meet "Watch Out! Junior is at the Wheel," a practical demonstration of the driver training programs being offered to students, was enthusiastically received by members of Anaheim High School P-TA at their meeting last night in the school cafeteria. Speakers were William Hicks, instructor; and Harold M. Long of the Auto club. Assisting in demonstration of tests were sophomore class officers and representatives of the student council, Lou Ann Fukudu, Mary Cone, Jerry Nielsen and Mike Troop. Highlighting the program was a faculty surprise act presented in the form of a pantomime. Featured were Mrs. William Fackliner, Miss Beverly Schnugg and Sheldon Disrud. The proposed junior high school building program and curriculum was discussed by J. A. Baker, trustee; and Ralph Wines, curriculum committee chairman. Following their complete reports a question and answer period was held. Mrs. Fred Lee, recreation chairman, moved to discontinue plans for a dancing lesson program due to lack of interest on the part of the students. Mrs. Howard Wilkinson, membership chairman, reported 552 current membership and said that the membership poster entered by Jean Jones of Anaheim High school had taken first place at the district judging and will be sent to the state convention in San Francisco. Mrs. Foster Warwick presided over the business session. In charge of the social hour were Mrs. H. Martin, Mrs. B. Stewart, Mrs. W. Arrowood, Mrs. W. Lewellyn, Mrs. C. Rail and Mrs. H. Lenz. Decorations were arranged by Mrs. Jesse Coykendall, Mrs. Everett Koontz and Mrs. Fred Holve. WASHINGTON (P)—The Truman administration is campaigning for extension of an international wheat agreement on the ground that it helps thwart communism in Europe. Remember Speed Kills! Silver Tea to Honor Council Past Presidents Annual P-TA Founders Day silent tea will be held Jan. 25, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the home of Mrs. J. Lee Rogers, 13371 E. North st. Past presidents of the council will be special guests and wives of the principals of different schools will pour. Guests of the afternoon are teachers from local schools. Mrs Warren Hodges, general chairman, has issued an invitation to all members and friends of the P-TA. Previously held in February, the date has been advanced by one month this year. Visiting Nurses Annual Meet Set "Medical Care—the expanding horizon" will be the topic of guest speaker Dr. John Beeston at the annual dinner meeting of the Visiting Nurse Association of Orange county Monday, Jan. 28, 1952, at 7 p.m., at the YWCA, 1411 N. Broadway, Santa Ana. Dr. Beeston's wealth of experience in public health makes him well qualified to give his listeners some food for thought concerning Orange county's health problems and the expanding population. Dr. Beeston graduated in medicine at London University in 1940 and during World War II was health officer for a large borough in central London and later was Civil Defense medical director for N. West London. He came to the United States in 1947 to fill the position of assistant professor in Public Health at UCLA. Since 1951 he has been director of Disaster Preparedness for the HI- Home-Makers' Forum By JOAN S. WHITE Gasette Home Economist A decided delight to eye and tongue alike and easy to prepare are qualities that put the stamp of approval on that certain sweet something that usually climaxes the bridge luncheon or women's club meeting. You will enjoy the following recipe for just those reasons and bask in the compliments you will receive when you serve it. FRANCES WALDO'S FRENCH PIE 1½ pound chocolate wafer cookies 1¼ pound butter 2 eggs beaten 1½ cup powered sugar 1 cup whipping cream 1 small bottle marachino cherries 1½ cup chopped nuts Upon reading the recipe over, you will see it is something like the one for snowballs we gave the other day. It is uncooked and can be made well ahead of serving time. Crush the cookies and spread half of them in the bottom of a lightly greased shallow pan. Make a frosting of the butter, sugar and eggs and spread over the crumbs. Whip cream and pour on top of the frosting, spreading evenly. Drain and slice the cherries and sprinkle them and the nuts over the whipped cream. As a final layer, top with remaining crumbs and refrigerate until firm enough to cut in squares. This below cost on yard goods, sewing supplies, plastic curtains and the like. McMahan's entire stock of new and used furniture and appliances is discounted so that you save up to 50 per cent. Penney's January clearance features markdowns in nearly every department. Quality wearing apparel at SQR is moving fast at pin money prices. You may find just the casual dress or suit you've been looking for. Garey's Furniture store in Anaheim is continuing the sell-out of Rice Bros. stocks. Rice Bros. closed its doors recently, and through their arrangement with Garey's, you can still take advantage of big reductions on nationally advertised appliances, furniture, bedding and rugs on an easy payment plan. An offer that's hard to beat! ABOUT FOLKS YOU KNOW Are you partial to mushrooms? Then get set to envy Mrs. Millard Clark who has a whole field of them and picks them by the box full just for family use. She can tell a toadstool from a mushroom everytime, she' is that kind of a farmerette. Did you know a mushroom has no measurable calories? LaVern Jensen's folks are visiting from Minnesota. So are Marge Kettler's relatives. All report that they feel the California brand of cold more than they ever did the Minnesota winters. Can you beat Dr. Beeston graduated in medicine at London University in 1940 and during World War II was health officer for a large borough in central London and later was Civil Defense medical director for N. West London. He came to the United States in 1947 to fill the position of assistant professor in Public Health at UCLA. Since 1951 he has been director of Disaster Preparedness for the University. Because of his special interest in the field of geriatrics and medical care, Dr. Beeston was invited by Governor Warren to be a panel participant and editorial writer for the governor's conference on aging in Sacramento in October of last year. "The Board of Directors of the Visiting Nurse association is proud to present this outstanding person to Orange county," said Mrs. George Kellogg, president of the association. "We feel that he has much to give those of us interested in the care of the sick." Reservations may be made until Friday, Jan. 25 by calling the Visiting Nurse association office, Kimberly 3-5686. Lingerie Treasure ABOUT TOWN Everything has been changed at Spears Camera and Photo Shop except the address which is 117 S. Los Angeles st. The new owners are Doug and Elsie Taylor who are making the shop headquarters for the View-master and reels, camera supplies, photo finishing and tinting, portraits and passport pictures. Winter hours of McCoy's Cut Rate Drug store are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on week days and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays. It might be well to jot down McCoy's emergency night phone number which is Anaheim 3908. The Spanish Kitchen on S. Los Angeles st., is now open under new management. Good food and courteous service makes it interesting. Two banquet rooms available for parties. And speaking of openings, Carrell Christie, public accountant, has opened an office at 433 W. Center street to handle accounting, audits—and most important to the homemaker—income tax. Sales—how we love 'em. January clearance sales have broken out in town like a rash with bargains galore. You have to watch the daily ads in the Gazette to be on hand when the doors open. Anaheim Textile store has cut prices to cost and lightly greased shallow pan. This amount serves eight. ABOUT JENSEN'S FOLKS ARE VISITING FROM MINNESOTA. So are MARGE KETTLER'S relatives. All report that they feel the California brand of cold more than they ever did the Minnesota winters. Can you beat that? Lots of colds going around come to think of it. Annabelle Hansen has been feeling poorly since before Christmas and a bad cough persists. Olive Dilley's daughter has tonsolitis. Keeping a pair of two year old twins indoors and quiet is a problem as Joyee Warde has discovered. Baby's cold has kept Evelyn Smirl close to home too, so you see, mother, there are many in the same boat! What happens when you plan a one dish casserole dish and then somehow drop the dish when removing it from the oven? Ask Lavonne Knox. Harriet Held's busy fingers are always flying over some bit of fancy work. Covers for coat hangers are the latest. Vera Jean Hilbers' first attempt in that direction is an afghan. She is in the midst of sewing one hundred and fifty finished squares together. Ester David was number 27 on a list of 28 Anaheim householders to report a window broken by wanton mischief. Her's is the large plate glass picture variety which after several smashings is now insured against that very thing. This time it was three teen-age boys from Santa Ana armed with marbles and slingshot who did the damage. Apprehended, they have $1400 worth of windows to pay for. A welcome addition to your lingerie wardrobe is this night-gown that fits so comfortably, looks so dainty and feminine. Wing sleeves give the right amount of arm covering, or it can be made sleeveless. Jacket is nice for reading in bed. Barbara Bell sew-rite perforated pattern No. 1213 is designed in sizes 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50 and 52. Size 38, gown, requires 4% yards of 39-inch fabric; jacket, 2% yards. Paul Women's Relief Corps was held yesterday afternoon at the home of Mable Ives 407 E. North st. Officers nominated for the coming year are, Alice Robert, president; Mable Ives, vice-president; Mary Ashenfelter, secretary; Olga Ballinger, treasurer. BROILED CHICKEN Broiled chicken tastes delicious when it has been spread with a mixture of butter or margarine, salt, pepper, and paprika before it goes under the heating unit. Make a little gravy with the drippings in the broiling pan and serve with the chicken and steamed rice. SHRIMP SAUCE If you add celery leaves, a slice of onion, a bay leaf, a few cloves and peppercorns to the salted water in which you cook shrimp you can strain the liquid and use it as stock for a sauce to serve with the shrimp or other fish. One or two cups of water is plenty in which to cook a pound of shrimp. PENNEY'S SAVE ON ALL YOUR INFANTS NEEDS!
