Poll Discloses Feeling Toward Nazi Party
FREIBURG, Germany (AP)—U.S. High Commissioner John J. McCloy said today public opinion poll taken by his staff showed only 20 per cent of Germans interviewed would do anything to prevent the rise of another Nazi party.
But, he said, the survey indicated "only 13 per cent of the German people would support a Nazi-like party today."
"It is incomprehensible even that 13 per cent of the German people would again support such aberration," McCloy said. "Nevertheless, this percentage shows there is no immediate threat."
McCloy said the real threat of a rebirth of Nazism "lies in the apathy of millions of men and women in this country, in their failure to recognize that they must act in defense of their own liberties."
In an address prepared for delivery before the faculty and students of the University of Freiburg in this French zone city the high commissioner said:
"It is my belief that the German people, which has suffered terribly as a result of Nazi rule, ought to be in the forefront of those opposed to any recrudescence of Nazism. Not enough Germans are alert to resist extremist movements."
Eisenhower in Honor Role
PARIS (P)—Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower was made an associate member today of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of the Institute of France, a 300-year-old French seat of culture and learning.
In accepting the honor, he told the members of the academy in a prepared speech that the task of forming an international defense force to resist communist aggression "is a task of a scope never before seen in peacetime, even during the three centuries of the existence of this ancient institution."
The general said "the freedom loving peoples of the world have now embarked on a great collective effort to preserve those things which make life worth living.

Chestnut St., Anaheim, California, and whose business is that of an ice cream parlor and which business is known as Currie's, intends, as mortgage, to mortgage to Bank of America National Trust and Savings Association, whose branch address is given herein below, as mortgage, certain personal property of which a general statement of the character thereof is as follows: All furniture and equipment used in the operation of Currie's Ice Cream store which personal property is located at 621 West Center St., Anaheim, California, and that any consideration for said mortgage will be paid at the hour of parts of the state and there is a heavy snow pack in the mountains."
SAIGON, Indochina (P)—Communist Indochinese terrorists employed a new weapon today against the French and their Vietnamese allies — exploding bicycles which injured some 30 persons.
NEW YORK (P)—Winston Churchill will bid goodbye to the United States tomorrow, but whether it will be a big send-off or a quiet farewell was not clear today.
EDUCATION — While Brea school trustees advertised for bids for the $210,000 school expansion program, voters of Newport voted down a $983,000 school bone proposal.
COURTORIX—the courtroom fight to free Gerald Bonebrink, 21, of a murder charge began in superior court. The Laguanan is accused of fatally shooting Richard Shaw at a Christmas Eve poker party. Rollin McGill Billings, Jr., the 15-year-old Santa Ana youth accused of a brutal elaw hammer assault of a Santa Ana housewife, Mrs. Elaine S. Alling, 32, Dec. 31, will be given a mental hearing this week. Former Arizona deputy sheriff Mitchy Naumicheff, claims he was "framed" and demanied a jury trial on charges of grand theft. A jury of 11 women and one man is expected to get to the child-burning case today or tomorrow. Mrs. Curlyn Munger and Mrs. Julia Ward stand accused of unjustly punishing three small boys who attended the Bethel school between Anaheim and Buena Park Oct. 18.
BUILDING—Anaheim building was practically at a standstill during the past week according to figures by Homer Wallace. The rain cut down the building activity and it also reduced highway fatalities.

Neither rain nor flood slows down the drilling on Anaheim Industrial No. 1. Steele Petroleum officials today said the drillers have reached a depth of 2200 feet after setting the whipstock at 1980 feet Saturday. The lateral drill is going approximately south.
BUILDING — Anaheim building was practically at a standstill during the past week according to figures by Homer Wallace. The rain cut down the building activity and it also reduced highway fatalities.
SPORTLINES — Successive losses to Fullerton and Newport jolted Anahi's basketball hopes. Huntington Beach and Newport, both unbeaten, will clash tomorrow in a game that may determine the Sunset league title... Valencia and Capistrano are leading the Orange league. With Rickey DoCasas ringing up 17 points, Valencia beat Tustin, 45-50.
Alex Omalev's Fullerton college Hornets moved out in front in the Eastern conference by beating Chaffey, 68-51. Mount San Antonio defeated Santa Ana , 82-55.
Many county sporting events were canceled or postponed because of weather conditions.
AGRICULTURAL — Anaheim and Orange county farmers benefitted considerably from the heavy January rains, according to Dixon W. Tubbs, agricultural commissioner. Although the downpour and accompanying flood waters caused damage to orange groves and truck crops west of Anaheim, the over-all value will far outstrip the damage he pointed out.
HIGH AND DRY — Although Fullerton has gotten it's share of the precipitation, thanks to the adequate planning by a son-of-an Anaheimer — Herman

Hiltscher—that city is comparatively dry.
During the depression years, Fullerton utilized WPA monies to finance its flood control projects. Two barrancas running through the town were cement lined to assure rapid flow off.
While the Fullerton and Brea dams were built by the army engineers, it was Hiltscher who added in seeing that these projects were given top priority and completed.
In a way, Hiltscher’s good work also benefited Anaheim inasmuch as a lot of water is diverted to Coyote Creek which otherwise might gush through Anaheim streets.
DAM—Back in the days when the Fullerton, Brea and the Prado dams were engineers’ dreams, the army engineers planned a dam in Olinda to check the swerling waters from Carbon Canyon.
It is the waters from these hills that run thorough Anaheim. Had Anaheim had a man of vision to boost the project, La Palma park might not be flooded.
If it is true what the weather prognosticators say, we’re in for a series of wet years — flood years.
While these floods may not be major disasters, they will have their nuisance factor in that roads will be inundated, cars flooded and stalled, business houses and manufacturing plants flooded with muddy, silt-laden water.
Debris will also be piled up and the already inadequate storm drains blocked.
SUGGESTION — Something should be done about the swirling muddy waters that run from curb to curb in Northgate streets.
Anaheim building rally at a standstill past week according to Homer Wallace. The town building activity also reduced highway and stalled, business houses and manufacturing plants flooded with muddy, silt-laden water.
Debris will also be piled up and the already inadequate storm drains blocked.
SUGGESTION — Something should be done about the swirling, muddy waters that run from curb to curb in Northgate streets. Something must be done about an aggravating condition. Influential Anaheimers should make a New Year's Resolution right here and now to do something about it. It can be done. And it should be done.
TRANSITION — Six births, four deaths; and three marriage licenses composed Anaheim's vital statistics of the week. F. H. Nieblas, Trinidad Vasquez and Jerome Schinhosen became proud papas of boys, while George Brown, C. W. Petitt and Ellis Berdin welcomed daughters to their respective families. Death came to Mrs. Vona Allen, 74; Oscar L. Hughes, 57; Miss Meria P. Van Oost; and Carl R. Wollenman, 44... Phillip Webb and Elen Jane, Nichols got a marriage license, as did Denny Dickenson and Billie Jeanine Sanders; and Don Reed and Molly Jane Bummett.
NITECAPSULE—A lot of doole chaps really get brave when they slide in behind the wheel of a car.
LONDON (F)—Britain has named Robert Hankey, a young but tried as her new ambassador to Tehran in the hope of ending the long Anglo-Iranian oil deadlock, informed officials said today.
