Fibre Glass Used As All-Year Garden Mulching Material
A new all-season garden mulch of fibrous glass is finding favor among Western nurserymen and gardeners. Composed of tiny, inorganic glass fibers, the mulching material is an effective soil insulator, when used as a top dressing. It protects the root systems of tender and half-hardy plants and shrubs against rapid temperature changes in winter and soil baking in summer.
A mulch used as a top dressing has two main jobs to do. It must retard evaporation of soil moisture in the summer and it must retain soil heat in the winter.
Peat moss and other organic fibrous mulches absorb and retain moisture, thus acting as conductors. Fiberglas mulch, composed of inorganic glass fibers, on the other hand, acts as an excellent insulator, just as it does in your refrigerator, stove or attic. In winter it keeps the soil and root system warm, and in summer it turns back the baking rays of the sun and keeps the moisture in the soil where it is needed.
The superior winter mulching properties of Fiberglas have been proved conclusively by tests conducted by Cornell University. Those tests revealed that tender and half-hardy plants whose lower stems and root systems were protected by a generous layer of Fiberglas Mulch came through the harsh winters in better condition than those protected by other mulching materials. It's the sudden changes in temperature that do the real damage. By leveling out the high day and low night temperatures, the insulating properties of Fiberglas Mulch reduce plant injuries caused by these rapid changes.
These same insulating properties make the mulch an excellent top dressing and soil insulator, in summer. In areas where temperatures of 100 degrees and above are not uncommon, nurserymen have

The "Call" to United Christian Youth Action, being sounded from coast to coast on Sunday, Feb. 3, by the United Christian Youth Council composed of 38 major denominations and the YMCA and YWCA groups, is gaining rapidly-mounting interest in the church youth groups of Anaheim.
Representatives from the youth groups of eight local churches plus the YMCA Council have been meeting weekly to plan details of the city-wide youth rally to be held at 7 o'clock on Feb. 3, at the Church of Christ.
The committee includes: Dieter Hessel, community chairman; Erland Eberhard, Grace Lutheran church; Barbara Ryan, Presbyterian; Mary Alice Casebeer, Church of Christ; Pat Brooks, Wesley Methodist; Frank Stauffer, Episcopal; Mary Dougherty, White Temple Methodist; Shirley Pannier, Evangelical-United Brethren; Jim Hovey and Glenda Mungerson, YMCA Council co-chairman and Elma Clamp, First Bap-

Medical facilities including a number of treatment rooms occupy a substantial portion of the 250-000-square-foot building at 500 E. Orangethorpe ave. The Anaheim Division is occupying the 500x500 foot building under lease from the Marda Corporation and is building fire control instruments to Army Ordnance Corps design for use in tanks.
A long effective life as an "air conditioner" of the soil. It does not absorb nitrogen, the valuable nutritive element, from the soil, as do many organic mulching materials.
A few people notice a slight itch of the "hair-in-the-collar". Variety between the fingers when handling it. It is entirely superficial, however, and stops immediately after a good soap and water hand wash.
Fiberglass Mulch is completely sanitary and weed-free. It is extremely light weight and, therefore, can not damage small delicate plants. Yet it will not blow away in fairly strong winds. Spread on the soil and well wet-tied, the tiny glass fibers or nodules seem to knit together, forming a mat-like covering.
