ON THE LAM ... with Jim Lamhofer Just after our column of Wednesday night went to press, it was announced that Joe Louis after all was going to be allowed to play in the San Diego open-golf tournament. The reason given by Horton Smith, PGA president, for the two-fold ruling by which Louis was named as eligible to compete and Bill Spiller, Negro professional, as ineligible, was that Louis was an amateur and thus did not come under PGA jurisdiction. Smith added that a PGA rule limited those eligible to play in PGA-sanctioned tournaments to Caucasians. In other words, Smith told us approximately nothing that was not already known. Under a flood of righteous public indignation over the matter, Smith sought refuge in a convenient line of thinking — that the Professional Golfers of America were obligated by moral principle to observe the laws set up by themselves as legislators and governing body. How much moral principle is exemplified by observance of a rule such as this is a good question. So endeavored Horton Smith to quell the furor and to cause it to subside. He has been temporarily successful. Louis has gone ahead to play in the tournament under protest, over the exclusion of Spiller. But the matter is far from a dead issue. Conversely, it is a hot potato. Caused originally by ignorance of the "Caucasian" requirement by San Diego officials when they invited Louis, the resulting attention brought to focus may prove conclusively that in this case, ignorance is definitely bliss. For, as we have said before, this is not the first incident of this type, but it is the first involving a "name" sports personality such as Louis. People somehow react diffidently when a Joe Schmoe is given a dirty deal. Barring an unforeseen postponement because of bad weather the field of 130 or more was ready to swing into the second round of the 72-hole event, first major tournament in San Diego's history. Leading the field with a seven under par, competitive course record-breaking 64 was 32-year-old Ted Kroll of New Hartford, N.Y. Kroll's score, achieved on the last few holes in a driving rain, broke a 25-year-old mark for the par 72 San Diego Country club. The old mark was set by the present PGA president and storm center of the racial question, Horton Smith. Smith himself shot an incredible 73—remarkable in that for days he has been embroiled in the Negro vs PGA controversy. He started with a pair of sixes. He took 39 for the first nine but came back with a magnificent 34. His partners were Joe Louis, who had essayed the role of spearhead in the controversy, and Leland Gibson, a member of the PGA tournament committee. Louis, a two-handicap amateur, turned in 38-38—76 and Gibson 37-36—73. WASHINGTON (UP)—The Internal Revenue Bureau denies them League Champs Tangle Tonight on Colonist Court Opening a home stand for the next five Sunset league basketball games will be the Anaheim Colonist hoopsters and they start off their home stand by playing host to Newport Harbor tonight, who is now undefeated in loop competition. Game time is 3 p.m. Anaheim just concluded a road tour of three league opponent's territory—Santa Ana, Huntington Beach and Fullerton, where they won the first one and dropped the next two which puts them in a tie with Fullerton and Orange. Newport has yet to go up against powerful Huntington Beach, who is undefeated and working on a string of 12 straight victories, but they have met once this season, in the Oller's tourney and the Oilers won that game, 47-42, and as a result should be favored in their next meeting which will take place Tuesday. Anaheim and Newport Harbor are defending champions, and while the Tars have been carrying on in the same way as last year, the locals have been getting worse in their type of play on the hardwoods. That could be accounted for maybe as their ace point maker, Bill Ames hasn't played in the last two games due to the flu, and then it was the fact that they were playing before strange crowds and in different gyms where some would have the fan type of backboard (Huntington) or would be made of glass (Fullerton) or in a tiny gym (Santa Ana). Anaheim has scored, in league competition, 133 points while the Tars have totaled 145 points which is high for the loop. Anaheim's opponents have scored 127, while the opposition of the Sailors have scored 121 points. Led By Nettles Newport Harbor's offensive attack is led by All-CIF second team member of last year and Sunset League first team member, Armand Nettles, who took the league scoring title last year. Nettles stands 6'3", the tallest on the team, but of late he hasn't been the scoring threat of last season, although the team's attack has moved from more or less a one-man attack to a three-man attack. The other two aces of coach Jim Miller are forward Jim Mendon and center Lee Jayred, both 6'2". Mendon was selected on the all-tourney team at Huntington last month and almost ruined the Colonists single-handed. Anaheim possesses a short team, compared to the Sailors or for that matter, compared to just about anybody. On the starting unit there is only one player. Those very general and honeyed phrases require a little elaborating, Mr. Smith, before they can carry any coherent meaning whatsoever. As for box office receipts, we doubt of there are many golf fans anywhere who would stay away from a tournament because there were Negroes playing in it. Thus we question the use of the word "protect." As mentioned above, we have not heard the last of this controversy. An aroused Joe Louis and any clearsighted professional golfers should see to that. We have never yet heard of a horse being barred from entry in a race because it was a black horse. Must Win Tonight But what ever the reason for the two-straight defeats the Blue and Gold clad hoopsters have had, they now must win this game tonight or any chances of winning the title will vanish where the locals won't ever see it again this year. With the coming games in the second round going true to the dope bucket, as well as the final games of the first round, the Colonists will have to beat Newport twice and Huntington as well as the rest of their games. Huntington Beach doesn't figure to lose to Newport Harbor twice, let alone even once, but the Sailors could possibly win one of the games which would set up the titantic in the local gym with the Ollers, but all that hinges on the game and its results to The other two aces of coach Jim Miller are forward Jim Mendon and center Lee Jayred, both 6'2". Mendon was selected on the all-tourney team at Huntington last month and almost ruined the Colonists single-handed. Anaheim possesses a short team, compared to the Sailors or for that matter, compared to just about anybody. On the starting unit there is only one player who is over six feet and that is center and sometimes guard, Dave Moody who is 6' and one-tenth of an inch. Fast Breaking Team Not having the height that goes to make a winning team, coach Clare Van Hoorebeke, has tried to install the fast break style of play, but at times they find themselves coming down the court last. Possessing the speed on the team is little guard or forward, Ira Webber, who made the All Sunset League second team last year. He is slowly rounding into shape after an extended football season where he made the all-Sunset loop football team at a halfback spot. Trying very hard of late to lift the team up off the floor since the absence of Ames has been guard Johnny Steinborn, another top-notch footballer. Steinborn went on a scoring rampage at Huntington, potting 17 points. He made eight against the Tribe Tuesday. Steinborn is the leading point maker in loop games with 32 and is closely followed by Webber, who has 26 and Moody with 25. However, Mendon all three with his 43 points. Nettles has 25, while Jayred has a total of 32 for the three games. News dispatches from Santa Cruz said a frontier police patrol had recovered the body near Tres Lagos. Poincenot and seven other French Alpinists had planned to climb the mountain in the southern Andes. He was trying to cross Fitz Roy river when a rope he was holding broke. Defending Champs Face Current Leader Tars at 4 One and possibly two league champions will meet today in the Anaheim high school gym starting at 4 when Anaheim, defending Sunset league basketball champion, will meet Newport Harbor which has won three straight games and could possibly be the new league champs with their win tonight over the Colonists. Newport in their three league games have rolled up 141 points for an average of 47 points per contest while holding their opponents to 119 points for an average of 39.6 points. Anaheim has scored 128 points for an average of 42.6 while limiting their foe to 107 points for an average per contest of 35.6. The Colonists are currently working on a winning streak of two straight and will be going all out to knock over the loop leaders and get back into the driver's seat with 34 registered in loop competition. Salazar is averaging 11.3 points per game while runner-up Bob Stewart has 30 for an average of 10.0 points. Stewart and Fred Frank, center of the team, are the ace bounders for coach Bill Hunstock's team that is sporting a win-loss record of 10-3. In the last two games Hunstock has started his reserves, keeping the first unit on the bench to watch the play of the others. But in the Fullerton game, that maneuver almost cost him the ball game as the Indians jumped out to an easy and early lead. It wasn't until early in the second quarter that the Anaheim team passed the Tribe in the scoring race to take their eventual victory 45-36. With Pat Roberts still not feeling up to par the starting lineup for Anaheim will probably be George Bishop and Frank Navarro at those forward posts while Fred Frank works at center. Guards will be Salazar and Stewart. If Hunstock plans to follow his tactics of the last two games the forwards could be Lonnie Jenkins and Fred Sanchez, center Val Wiethorn and guards Dennis Nelson and Andy Johnson.
