Among the distinguished speakers of the evening were D. B. Root of the Guy F. Atkinson Co., Long Beach; Larence Inman of the Inman Co., Long Beach; C. F. Renshaw of Nutrilite, Buena Park, and George Hansen of Southern Pacific Co. A large number of civic and community leaders were in attendance at the installation, as well as executives and their wives from leading commercial and industrial firms from Los Angeles, Pomona and San Diego counties. Layette Shower Honors Matron Mrs. Dick Ponteprino was honored by a group of former high school classmates this week at a lovely layette shower. Hostess for the evening was Mrs. Ronald Morris who entertained in her home at 1234 Oak st. The home was decorated in blue and white chrysanthemums and refreshments of individual cakes topped with pink and blue booties Low 'n Easy Newest Motif In Home Decor By BETTY PROSSER CHICAGO (UP)—The attractions of the West Coast's informal way of life have found their way into new furnishings designed for homes from coast to coast. Much of the modern furniture which has forged into prominence at the 1952 Winter Home Furnishings Market has evolved from the indoor-outdoor existence possible in California and other warm areas. Bright color and functional, easy to live with furniture distinguishes much of the new styling. An outstanding display of coordination among makers of various furnishings items is the "Pacifica" line of furniture, drapery and upholstery fabrics, lamps, pottery pieces, rugs and wallpaper. This line, a California product, will be featured in more than 50 leading department stores and by thousands of interior decorators this spring. Its theme includes motifs from the West Coast and from the Pacific islands. Seating pieces are very long and exceptionally low, reminiscent of Mrs. Dick Ponteprino was honored by a group of former high school classmates this week at a lovely layette shower. Hostess for the evening was Mrs. Ronald Morris who entertained in her home at 1234 Oak st. The home was decorated in blue and white chrysanthemums and refreshments of individual cakes topped with pink and blue booties were served. Miniature rattles were distributed as favors. Attending were Mrs. E. E. Winger, mother of the honoree; Mrs. Usula Moise, Placentia; Mrs. Edgar Mark, Mrs. Veoda Jackson, Downey; Mrs. Ramona Brawn, Anaheim; Mrs. Wando Acton, Fullerton; Mrs. Rosemary Stehling, Bell; Miss Barbara Mark, Mrs. Norma Cadenhead, Mrs. Carlyce Gregor, Miss Beverly Moise, Miss Pierina Ponteprino, Mrs. S. Ponteprino and Mrs. Inez Broadaway, all of A. heim. Prizes were awarded to Miss Barbara Mark, Rosemary Stehling and Mrs. Betty Ponteprino. National Head To Address County SAE Dr. Robert A. Aurner of Carmel, recently elected national president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, will be the speaker at a special dinner meeting of SAE Alumni Assn. of Orange county, 7 p.m., Friday, in Newport Harbor Yacht club. Dr. Aurner is a prominent educator, speaker, and author and has been on the faculties of the Universities of Iowa, Lucern, Switzerland, and Heidelberg, Germany. All SAE's and their guests are invited to attend and reservations must be made through Dr. John N. Osborn, 19 Bay Island, Balboa. EARL PUGH ON LEAVE Earl W. Pugh, ALAN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Pugh, 149 N. Lemon st., Anaheim, is home on a 15-day leave from Whidby Island Naval Air Station, Wash. Jan. 29 and Feb. 26 in Fremont school cafeteria. Current Den Mother problems were also discussed. Fellows presided. L. A. Paxton, Scout executive for Northern Orange county, gave a short talk on the organization of the year-old Boy Scout Summer camp at Irvine park. Committee members attending were Robert Werner, Chester Hamlin and Don Redline. Den Mothers present were Audrey Royer, Marjorie Lanier and Mrs. Lee Fellows. This line, a California product, will be featured in more than 50 leading department stores and by thousands of interior decorators this spring. Its theme includes motifs from the West Coast and from the Pacific islands. Seating pieces are very long and exceptionally low, reminiscent of island parties where seating is on the floor. A sofa called the "Lanai" is 110 inches long and only 17½ inches in seat height. The deep foam rubber seat is 34 inches from front to back and invites curling up on, but is practically impossible to sit on decorously. It's made for lounging and looks it. A modification of the same design has a seat of more conventional depth. Neither model has seat cushions, but features the new "tight seat" widely shown at the current market. Accompanying the sofas is a boomerang-shaped coffee table, called the "Outtrigger," in pressed dark wood the makers call "Tortoise Shell." Bamboo is used for tops of other coffee and occasional tables, while another called "Surfboard" is shaped like its name and features bands of maple and mahogany in natural colors for contrast. A dining room set has "hand chairs" as opposed to arm chairs. The "arms," narrow wooden pieces, are only two or three inches above seat level to accommodate the user to the lower trend in all furniture, including dining room tables. The low "arms" facilitate moving the chair but do not get in the diner's way. Bedroom furniture boasts upholstered box-type headboards which provide storage space, yet are hinged to give back support. SWEET POTATO TOPPING A sweet potato topping tastes good over a casserole of creamed vegetables; mash boiled sweet potatoes with hot milk, melted butter or margarine, and an egg. PEELING AN AVACADO If you can't strip the skin from an avocado easily just pare it off with a small sharp knife. For Health, Eat California Fruit! to the reader-in-bed. Chests of all sorts come without legs so the purchaser can use them flush with the floor or on various height matching stands, which have their own drawers for additional storage room. Draperies and upholstery fabrics are lavish. One hand print wallpaper with irregular strips of gold over dark grounds, called "Sea Grass," has a companion fabric printed antique silk taffeta. Colors in the collection include such provocative shades as avocado, driftwood, nasturtium, lemon peel and carnation. Names of some of the fabrics give the idea pretty well—"Papaya," "Tonga Thatch," "Pandamus," "Lava," "Maori" and "Fiji." Theyre likely to make a large section of the consuming public want to go native—and that's what the manufacturers are counting on. Large County Executives' Secretaries Drive Charter at Meeting Last Night Mayor Charles Pearson and wife were guests of honor. In accepting office as leader of the newly-formed group, Mrs. Bittles, extended a vote of appreciation to the Long Beach chapter of Executives' Secretaries, under the supervision of Mrs. Ouida Flack, national secretary, and Miss Kay Greene, president of Long Beach chapter, which is sponsoring the Orange county branch. Also taking office were Mrs. Mary Jones of Anaheim Truck & Transfer, vice president; Mrs. Calista Leonard of Rinshed-Mason Co., Anaheim, secretary; Mrs. Georgia Lentz of Dennis Printers and Stationers, Santa Ana as treasurer; Mrs. Verona Weeks of Weeks Wholesale Rose Growers as sergeant-at-arms; Miss Mary Alden of Essex Wire Corp., Anaheim, as ways and means director; Miss Eleanore Freberg of General Electric Co., Anaheim, program director; Mrs. Enid Edmond of Northrop Aircraft, Inc., Anaheim, as notebook editor and Mrs. Irene Adams of Pepsi Cola Co., Santa Ana, membership chairman. M. Roger. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Hess had a wonderful Christmas. They completely redecorated their new home at 515 N. Clementine and managed to arrange their move from 306 N. Pine just in time the holidays. A brand new baby girl moved with them, the first feminine addition to a household that heretofore revolved around two small bpys. A hobby room adjoining the patio is in the process of construction at the Leo Frils home. In about a month, Mrs. Frils will be able to move part of her collection of antiques to these new quarters. Planning for and adding to a home is an absorbing hobby in itself. Since carpeting usually covers the largest area of a room, interior decorators often start to build the decorative scheme of things around the floor covering. The Smith-Reafsnyder Furniture company in Anaheim offers a free decorator and color harmony service. The talented decorating staff has assisted scores of Anaheim home-makers to work out color combinations, furniture arrangement, window treatment, and room coordination.
