WEATHERLINE — Freezing temperatures followed the season's biggest rain storm (3.42 inches). Wind machines and smudge pots minimized erop damage, however.
NEWSLINES — The Orange County Food Co., Inc., of which Robert Wurgaft is president, acquired the Tustin Central Lemon Ass'n plant as a warehouse... Robert Larson, the former Anaheimer, received the distinction of being Santa Ana's Outstanding Man of 1951. He is now in New Zealand visiting his wife's parents... John Ardiz of Yorba Linda will develop his 21 acre grove west or Anaheim into 92 single dwelling subdivision... With the Steele Petroleum Corp winning approval to drill for oil Anaheim's northern Industrial tract took on a "new look" when a steel derrick was added to the skyline... Infantrymen of the 40th Division—including Anaheim's own Co., K—donated 1500 pints of blood for use in Korea.
State Leads U.S. In Number of Federal Workers
WASHINGTON (UP) — Where would you find the most federal government workers?
Oddly enough the answer, a compilation by the Civil Service Commission, showed today is California—not Washington, D.C. It is the first time that federal employees in a single state outnumber those in the nation's capital.
The figures, based partially on estimates, show the Pacific Coast state had 252,000 federal employees on Sept. 30. The Washington area, including not only the District of Columbia but also nearby sections of Virginia and Maryland, had 249,900.
The government payroll on that date totaled 2,503,691, of which 173,349 were outside the continental United States.
California's huge total, the commission said, reflects the emphasis on the nation's defense effort. About 50,000 civilian employees have been added to military departments there in the past year.
New York, with 193,700 ranked second among the states.
