State Leads U.S. In Number of Federal Workers WASHINGTON (UP) — Where would you find the most federal government workers? Oddly enough the answer, a compilation by the Civil Service Commission, showed today is California—not Washington, D.C. It is the first time that federal employees in a single state outnumber those in the nation's capital. The figures, based partially on estimates, show the Pacific Coast state had 252,000 federal employees on Sept. 30. The Washington area, including not only the District of Columbia but also nearby sections of Virginia and Maryland, had 249,900. The government payroll on that date totaled 2,503,691, of which 173,349 were outside the continental United States. California's huge total, the commission said, reflects the emphasis on the nation's defense effort. About 50,000 civilian employees have been added to military departments there in the past year.
