Growers in the San Bernardino-Redlands area admitted their crops probably were damaged, despite heavy orchard heating. In Los Angeles the mercury dipped officially to 36, one degree warmer than yesterday. In one downtown location it dropped to 33. There was ice on downtown streets. Two deaths were attributed to the cold wave. Mrs. Ardith L. Bell, 40, of Los Angeles, and Frank Martinek, 73, of Long Beach, were asphyxiated when heaters depleted oxygen in their rooms. Western states today are crawling out from under the paralysis of a three-day snowstorm and subzero spell that marooned motorists, tied up rail traffic and took three lives in Colorado. Another two are missing after the cab of a semi-trailer was swept off snow-packed Wolf Creek pass in southwestern Colorado in a snow slide. Reecuers last night used snow plows, sleds and snowshoes to bite through eight-foot deep banks of snow and rescue 21 men marooned for more than five days in 10,000-foot Cumbres Pass on the Colorado-New Mexico border. The pass remained blocked Thursday, one snowplow — not used in three years — was stuck in deep, icy drifts and communications to the summit of the pass are out. Eastern New Mexico most of WANTED—A. Famed American Sculptor Dies On French Soil PARIS (AP)—Jo Davidson, 68, famed American sculptor, died of a heart attack last night at his country home in central France. The bearded sculptor, who rose from New York's lower East Side tenements to the top level of art and living, had been regarded as in relatively good health despite a few minor heart attacks in recent months. His wife telephoned friends in Paris that Davidson died near Sache, a village a few miles from Tours. He had gone from his Paris home to Becheron, his country place, for the Christmas and New Year holidays. He became ill late yesterday afternoon through eight-foot deep banks of snow and rescue 21 men marooned for more than five days in 10,000-foot Cumbres Pass on the Colorado-New Mexico border. Eastern New Mexico, most of West Texas and the south plains area of Texas is locked in the grip of an ice storm. Telephone calls out of Lubbock in West Texas are expected to be on an emergency basis only Thursday because of ice on wires. Thirty minor wrecks were reported on highways in that area. The cold and ice extends as far west as Central New Mexico. POSSIBILITY — Jim Lamhofer has again been separated from the service. Funeral arrangements were being made today. Burial probably will be in Paris, his widow said. Many of the great men of his time sat for Davidson's sculpture and many of his works are on permanent display in museums and government building over the world. Harold Stassen Plans to Enter Primary Contests in Three States WASHINGTON (UP)—Harold E. Stassen announced today he will enter primary contests in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Minnesota in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. Stassen told a news conference he has decided to go into Ohio because he feels that Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio, also a candidate for the GOP nomination, has challenged him in Pennsylvania and Minnesota. Stassen is a former governor of Minnesota. In order to become a candidate for the presidential nomination he took a leave of absence from the presidency of the University of Pennsylvania. Stassen said he is deferring a decision as to whether to enter presidential primary races in such other states as New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Nebraska. In reply to questions, Stassen said his decision as to whether to go into the New Hampshire primary will be influenced in part by whether Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes a candidate for the top nomination, or even whether Eisenhower’s name is entered in that primary. The New Hampshire contest on March 11 will be the first in the nation. Stassen said he was conceding that “the odds are against” him in his bid for the nomination. He said Taft has a “long, long lead.” Alluding to the table of the race between the tortoise and the DRUNK DRIVER FAILED LaRoy A. Osler of 138 E. Mt. st., Fullerton, was committed a 125-day county jail term yesterday by Anaheim city court; he appeared on charges drunk and driving. He was rested at 8:30 p.m., Jan. 1, Anaheim. In 1938 a strange 5-foot-lish fish was caught off the tip South Africa which was believed by ichthyologists to have been extinct 60 million years ago. For Health, Eat California Fruit hare, Stassen pictured himself the tortoise. Asked whom he regards as hare, Stassen laughed and replied “Senator Taft.” The Minnesota primary will held March 18, the Pennsylvanian contest, April 22, and the O primary May 6. Senator Fulbright (D-Ark), who headed the original Senate probe of the big government lending agency, told a reporter that members of his Banking subcommittee are going to “watch very closely” all changes at the higher levels of RFC management. His curiosity was aroused by the way the White House handled the sudden departure from RFC of Peter L. Bukowski, who has been No. 2 man to W. Stuart Symington in a housecleaning of the agency. Symington himself is reported by reliable sources to have asked President Truman for permission to resign and return to private life. Symington and Bukowski went to RFC last summer to become the big two in charge of a mopup job resulting from the Senate subcommittee’s charges that the agency had yielded to pressures of a political influence ring having White House contacts. Fulbright said he was concerned by reports that the White House—possibly through an oversight—failed to notify Bukowski before announcing that Mr. Trueman had accepted his resignation. Bukowski, a Republican, had won praise from both Democratic and Republican members of the Fulbright subcommittee for his work with Symington.
