Danson. Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and shall never thirst. PERSONALITIES—Any Texas schoolboy could tell you about Dick Dowling, but chances are that no California schoolboy could. Tex Dowling and his 42 Texans licked a Yankee army of 15,000 in the Civil War at Saline Pass. George H. Bailey was the medical officer attached to Dowling's group. He so distinguished himself in that battle that he was personally decorated by General Magruder, but the hardships of war broke his health. He came to Julian in 1872 and moved to Anaheim in 1875. Dr. Bailey was the father of Mrs. Henry Kuchel at whose home he died in 1909 at the age of 72. OUTSTANDING—Dr. Bailey was one of Anaheim's outstanding pioneer doctors. After attending public schools in Texas, he graduated from University of Louisiana (now Tulane) in 1861 and began his professional life in Milburn, Texas. Dr. Bailey obtained his California license (No. 371) in 1876. CLASSIFIED ANNOUNCEMENTS Classified rates for Anaheim Gazette. After attending public schools in Texas, he graduated from University of Louisiana (now Tulane) in 1861 and began his professional life in Milburn, Texas. Dr. Bailey obtained his California license (No. 371) in 1876. ISMAELITE—Joseph G. Bailey, the Ismaelite, was one of the most controversial figures in early day history. He came to Anaheim in 1887 where he remained for several years and then moved to Santa Ana. He was a hard worker and had an intense civic interest. He is now regarded as one of Santa Ana's greatest pioneer boosters. Not only did he build the first brick building in Santa Ana, but he provided the ground for the YMCA building, and was the founder and first secretary of the Santa Ana Public Library. FIRST—Anaheim also had the distinction of having the first woman doctor—Allice Boyle Higgin—who was distinguished also as being the first woman to graduate from a California medical school. She was also the first woman doctor to be licensed (No. 954) in the state. Dr. Higgin came to Anaheim in 1869 with her husband who opened a drug store here. It was believed that Mr. Higgin was a doctor in his own right, but he never practiced medicine. UNUSUAL — Jasper Newton Burtnett was perhaps one of the most colorful figures of the pioneer days. He served in theivil War with Co.H of the 89th Ohio Infantry brigade as a private. He came to California after the war between the states and worked as a laborer in Downey though he had a degree in medicine from the Jefferson Medical college, 1871. Dr. Burtnett came to Santa Ana in 1875 and the following year when he decided to practice medicine was issued state license No. 275. Floral arrangements by Fred's HOUSE OF FLOWERS 273 E. (P) — Butch, a six-year-old mongrel, knows his groceries even when they are enclosed in heavy metal containers. He sniffed a three-pound roast on the back porch where Mrs. John L. Watson had placed it to keep until dinner yesterday. Setting his teeth on the handle of the metal container, Butch lugged it all the way to the home of his master, Garrett Osterhouse, a block away. Oven Fresh & Delicious Special attention given to all your family bakery needs. Open evening's for your convenience. HADLEY'S BAKERY Los Angeles at Center Phone 2981 High School Youths Sell Trees for Stricken Teacher EL CERRITO, Calif. (P) — Students of El Cerrito high school today presented a check for $2700 — earned from the sales of Christmas trees—to their polio-stricken teacher. Jack Wilde, civics and history instructor, was striken Nov. 14, and taken to Herrick Memorial hospital in Berkeley. The students heard that their teacher's hospital care was very expensive, and his wife was expecting their fifth child in May. Someone suggested a Christmas tree sale to raise funds for the Wildes. The students, headed by Larry Billings, 17, of 105 Ardmore rd., Berkeley, got busy immediately. They set a goal of $1500. Each evening more than 100 students came to the school's patio and sold trees. Finally the last tree was gone. An El Cerrito merchant, learning of the students' project, suddenly decided he was not so anxious to be in the Christmas tree business. So he disposed of all his trees to the students. The youngsters presented the $2700 check to Mrs. Wilde at her home at 3047 Judith Court, San Pablo. A school choir went along to serenade Mrs. Wilde with carols. Cranberry juice is now bottled; serve ice-cold as an appetizer.
