We are not going into that time-worn "day after" lecture about how you shoulda voted Tuesday. It happens too many times; few take advantage of a basic and precious right: the vote. Anyway, please just realize that 12 per cent of the registered voters (that, of course, is not the total citizenry of voting age) voted on a proposition which means a tax rise for every property owner in the elementary school area. We are happy the issue carried; but we also are mindful of the implications of the slight vote. A theme of this column has been: “Our schools are exactly what we, parents and taxpayers, make them.” (We should not add “voters” to that lineup.) None of us wants lousy schools or schools infiltrated with foreign “isms.” So, just let slink in for a few moments the shocking fact that in an area with well over 15,000 population, only 507 people swung an election—only 850 persons were interested enough in the welfare of the schools to vote on an important school (and tax) issue. And, while you are at it Just dwell on the terrifying thought what 507 voters might do with some of your valuable freedoms. What the Register is FOR... Capital News Capsules The price of Bill Oatis- What the Register is FOR... The Anaheim Gazette, as a newspaper, has a rather envious respect for the mighty Santa Ana Register; it is a good newspaper because apparently it gives its readers and its Santa Ana advertisers their money's worth. But, for the life of us we never have been able to completely comprehend the Register's editorial page policles. The other day we apparently "crossed" the Register by recording: "The only opposition we have noted so far (to Anaheim's election on whether to raise the school tax levy) comes from outside the area which pays for the Anaheim schools. The Santa Ana Register, a newspaper which is never FOR anything and which has absolutely NO stake in the Anaheim schools and children, has taken it upon itself to oppose the school measure." "But, to be as kindly as we can with the Register, it is our understanding that paper thinks the public school system is the bunk and that a child should be educated only in accordance with the wealth of its father." In Sunday's Register the Gazette received a fatherly lecture which set up the situation thus, in the words of the Register: In a recent editorial in the Anaheim Gazette, it had this to say in discussing a proposed bond issue (sic), for schools in Anaheim: "The only opposition we have noted so far comes from outside the area which pays for the Anaheim schools. The Santa Ana Register, a newspaper which is never FOR anything..." etc. Now, the important part of this exchange is the fact that the Register is FOR..." People swung an election—only 850 persons were interested enough in the welfare of the schools to vote on an important school (and tax) issue. And, while you are at it just dwell on the terrifying thought what 507 voters might do with some of your valuable freedoms. What the Register is FOR... Upwards of 100 couples were present and tripped the light fantastic so the voluptuous strains of McEachran's orchestra. The ball was tastefully decorated with flowers, palms and evergreens, which transferred the drill hall into a bower of beauty. The ball was in charge of the company's amusement committee, composed of Herman Stern, chairman; Louis Kroeger, treasurer; Eugene Adams, secretary; Charley Fay, Ed Zeus, Ed Bennescheidt and Bobby Mills. The floor committee was composed of those heavy swells L. Kroeger, Albert Nagel and Dick Zerman. At midnight, the dancers sat down in a sprightful turkey dinner, prepared by those local Delmonicos, Bennerscheidt and Bob Mills. Tables literally groaned under the weight of good things. After supper dancing continued until a late hour. Socially and financially the ball was a success, and the company realized quite a handsome sum to be turned into the fund to provide it with amusements during the winter. Anaheim Lodge No. 193 LO.O.F., elected the following oficers for the ensuing terms: O. W. Warling, Noble Grand; A. L. Lewis, vice-grand; Frank S. The Speaker recommended that a crusading Attorney General be named to start prosecutions. The shrewd Texan, a veteran of many political storms, is described by friends as "extremely concerned" by the scandals. He told the president that, if he did not act quickly, mink coats would be thrown at the administration on every bill sent to Congress from 1600 Pennsylvania avenue. Under these circumstances, Rayburn warned, Democratic leaders would have no hope of controlling even a majority of their party members. In private the Speaker has gone much farther. "Harry Truman is a dead duck politically right now." Rayburn has told friends, "and the party will be just as dead unless we can prove to the people we're cleaning out our own black sheep. If the administration won't move it's up to Democrats in Congress to do it. After all, every one of us is concerned. The tax scandals are hurting us badly." Rayburn has also intimated it might be necessary for party leaders on Capitol Hill to repudiate the Truman administration—unless the president moved energetically. Modestly we bow to your wishes. So here he is. THE FARM EDITOR shown above taking on a hot rumor by telephone straight from the prosperous orange groves of Florida. THIS IS A quiet little letter to Exchange growers designed to provoke these quips are getting into someone's hair. Last week the Exchange ran one of their "grower service" ads which, in plain language, are pure propaganda designed to show the grower what a great boon the Exchange has been to the California grower. These ads have run in the Anaheim Gazette for many years. But on the current schedule we were cut off, period. Now the mere fact that we were cut off is of little importance. But the reason why is an entirely different matter. Capital News Capsules The price of Bill Oatis—Defense Secretary Lovett has told the State Department he will never agree to swap a steel mill for release of A.P. correspondent William Oatis from a Czech prison. The Czech government has told the United States the price for Oatis’ freedom is delivery of a $22,000,000 steel mill ordered from the United States in 1946. The mill was completed and paid for by the Czechs but the State Department has been holding up delivery. The Defense Department now contends that the Czech offer in pure blackmail and no matter how much it wants Oatis released it won’t hand a steel mill over to Czechoslovakia. Behind the Iron Curtain — Word from Moscow is that Stalin has ordered Russia’s top atomic scientists to produce atomic artillery for the red army by June first—or else, U.S. observers say there’s evidence Stalin and the Poluburo are schooled at America’s success in perfecting this new battlefield weapon, and realize that, unless the Russians catch up in the next six months, the red army will be hopelessly outdated. Until recently, Stalin’s advisers had told him the United States was bluffing and that it did not have any tactical atomic weapons. But latest tests in Nevada have proved this to be false; so Stalin has now ordered an all-out production campaign. Unfortunately, the Russians already have made substantial strides toward developing atomic artillery and U.S. experts fear they will be ready to test their first shell some time in March. Last week the Exchange ran one of their “grower service” ads which, in plain language, are pure propaganda designed to show the grower what a great boom the Exchange has been to the California grower. These ads have run in the Anaheim Gazette for many years. But on the current schedule we were cut off, period. Now the more fact that we were cut off is of little importance. But the reason why is an entirely different matter. The reason why is because this newspaper has dug up some truths, that the “hired help” did not want the growers to know, and printed those same truths right out in public. No, the “boys” up in the Kremlin did not like to be “told” on. They would like the California growers to be informed only by the “news reports” or propaganda that they put out themselves: WE MAKE this statement unreservedly; we would rather have our self respect than to keep quiet about some of the abuses that are present in the California citrus industry. And, mind you, this column has only examined the surface. All of these abuses take money out of the grower pocket. We would like to see the California grower get the full economic value out of his orange crop—and get it right in his pocketbook, not in Kremlin, “saloney” which does not pay bills. This is the only axe we have to mind. We leave it for you to guess about the axe grinding the boys in the Kremlin have to do. There are the ones who cut this newspaper off the advertising schedule. So there you have it. In the year of Our Lord, 1951, we see the sight of a large co-operative, unable to change the editorial opinion of a country newspaper, trying to hurt that newspaper by withholding advertising. AT LEAST they cannot burn us at the stake. This shows progress because the THINKING IS THE SAME. And mind you all we have said is that we believe the Exchange management has been willing to sell our oranges for too little net return for the grower. By saying this we were not trying to make friends among the management. We were trying to influence them to have a stiffer back bone when it came to selling California oranges. Any thinking person would agree that management which had turned in a comparable job to the Kremlin “krass” for the past few years had a little questioning coming. With a lot of government help and subsidy the citrus grower return in California was away under 50 per cent of parity. Private enterprise, the American way, we still believe, wants no government crunch and periodically it cleans out the deadwood. Now we know perfectly well there is no deadwood in the Kremlin because there has been nothing cleaned out up there except by an act of Providence since nineteen when? DANSON HOLLYWOOD — "Operation Santa Claus" got under way shortly after dawn this morning, as an Air Force C-54 rolled down the runway at Lockheed Air Terminal, in Burbank, with a cargo consisting of Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy, Songtie Carole Richards; Accordionist Dominic Frontiere, and thousands of gifts for our hospitalized service men in cities scattered from coast-to-coast. According to Edgar, he and Charlie will present their show not only in hospital auditoriums, but also in the individual wards for the benefit of the sick and wounded who are not able to move from their beds. "I feel that this is going to be the most satisfying Christmas season I have ever experienced," Bergen said, "and I am grateful to all the generous people who have mailed in gifts and helped make this trip possible." "Bergen just loves playing Santa Claus, with the long white beard and all," kidded Charlie via Bergen. "It isn't often he gets to run his fingers through that old OPA system of having retail stores post their prices will be instituted by OPS shortly. Then, a customer can compare ceiling prices with the articles he is buying." Bergen emphasized that it still was not too late to join "Operation Santa Claus," and thousands of additional gifts would be welcome for distribution in the nation-wide tour. They will be forwarded promptly to the hospitals on the itinerary. All gifts are to be addressed: "Edgar Bergen's Operation Santa Claus, CBS, Hollywood, Calif." One of the most unusual contributions to date came from the Bartow, Fla., Chamber of Commerce, which donated two freight carloads of oranges and grapefruit. Apprised of this generous contribution, the California Fruit Growers Exchange promptly offered four more carloads of citrus fruits. "After all," said the California growers, "we know that Charlie McCarthy comes from an old line of California redwoods, and in a cause like this, we certainly can't let Florida out-do-us."
