Colonists Display Will to Win in 39-36 Victory Over Excelsior in HB Tourney Anaheim will go into battle tonight at 8 against Bell Gardens in the semi-final lower bracket of the 23rd Annual Huntington Beach Invitational Basketball tournament as a result of their terrific game with Excelsior last night. It was by far, the best game of the short season for the locals and just about had to be too, since the Pilots from Excelsior possessed one of the stronger teams in the Oller tourney. Bill Ames, Harold Rees and Dave Moody were all sensational and were truly the determining factor in the Anaheim 39-36 victory. Seven Man Team Len Kolb, Gayle Herbel, Ira Webber and Jim Holve made up the rest of the Anaheim team and all were truly playing some of their best ball last night. Moody and Rees were controlling the boards while Ames and Kolb were scoring on long set shots throughout the evening. Kolb was kicked out of the game while Ames had to leave due to too many fouls late in the game. Anaheim built up a first period lead of 9-6 then increased that to 24-16 at the end of the half, but in the third period Excelsior with their five free throws quickly closed the gap and made the score at the end of the period 32-29. Anaheim still out in front. Clean Gap Quick Ira Webber scored two free throws and Jim Holve put in one from the floor, but five straight points by the Green and White clad team put the game in a very dangerous position, for the Colonists, that is. With four minutes left in the game, Moody, then Ames scored from the gratis line while forward Andy Boersma scored on a running set shot to make the score 39-36, but with three minutes left in the game. Anaheim then went into a long, but successful stall, controlling the ball in the enemy's court. The Pilots tried vainly to capture the ball, but in their eagerness would foul. Take Ball Out of Bounds Anaheim would then forego their free throws and take the ball out of bounds and that's the way it happened.
