Public Support Sought in Fight Against Muscular Dystrophy
To fight the least-publicized, but most-deadly of all disabling diseases, public support is being sought in Southern California. It was announced today.
It is the mystery disease, muscular dystrophy, which has a 100 per cent fatality record.
As dangerous as cancer, polio, cerebral palsy, leukemia or multiple sclerosis, it is relatively unknown, although it has stricken an estimated 200,000 Americans, the majority of whom are children between the ages of 3 and 13.
As part of a National Muscular Dystrophy appeal to accelerate research, $150,000 must be raised in California, according to Mrs. Martha Yorke McGeein, president of the Southern California chapter, Muscular Dystrophy Associations of America, Inc.
Victims and families of victims are urged to join the drive by writing to Mrs. McGeein, in care of Muscular Dystrophy Appeal, Los Angeles 19, the only source in Southern California that can provide information on the disease.
According to Mrs. McGeein, herself a victim, the stricken face progressive degeneration of muscles until the body no longer is able to fight off other maladies. Without knowledge of cause or cure, medical science is helpless to combat the disease and death is certain, usually within a range of ten years.
Early symptoms include wobbly legs, lack of pep, tendency to fall down and loss of chest and shoulder muscles. One by one sets of muscles become dead.
Public donations should be directed to Muscular Dystrophy Appeal, Los Angeles 19, Calif.

Big Question Is How to Proceed Without Falling
CHICAGO (AP)—Rep. Engle (D-Calif) said today that the big question in land and water development is "how to proceed without falling victim to complete federalization."
The Californian, chairman of the House Reclamation subcommittee, said in a speech prepared for the annual meeting of the American Farm Bureau Federation that he believes the benefits of federal participation in development of natural resources can be retained without sacrificing the benefits of local participation and administration.
But, Engle said, there are some people who favor complete federalization of land and water development programs of the nation on a regional basis.
"They believe that state governments have outlived in a large measure their usefulness except for the exercise of police power and purely local concerns at the local level," he said.

"A grim test makes the Washington rounds today. It is "A single atom bomb can save the country... if it is dropped on Washington."
What is meant is that seemingly this is the only way to eliminate the free-spending bureaucrats who have fastened such a hold on the American tax dollar.
Washington veterans can understand, although not condone, the greed behind alleged graft disclosures now making headlines. But sheer luncy, as exemplified by many bureaucratic actions, passes all understanding. That is why the saying now is: "We are used to a White House clique, a Capitol Hill clique, a military clique, and others, but now there has been added to government a St. Elizabeth clique.
St. Elizabeth's is the large hospital for insane near Washington.
For example, the Marshall Plan publishes many, many publications, all carrying clever little stories, ground out by hundreds of government press agents, hailing Marshall Plan accomplishments.
The Marshall Plan News, an expansively printed slick paper publication points with pride that Marshall Plan dollars are now being used to rehabilitate the ancient ruins of Greece, just as new taxes bite deep into every family.
Marshall Plan officials rush into print to boost about their new way of throwing away dollars.
Congress, when more money was voted, was told that Marshall Plan would be changed to the Mutual Defense Assistance Plan, to aid free Europe arm for defense.
The fact that Congress accepted this statement indicates even Congressmen fail to understand lunacy.
And now with great pride, Marshall Plan officials rush into print to report how greatly they have helped the Austrian zither industry. A zither is a seldom used multi-stringed musical instrument.
They carefully point out that Marshall Plan dollars, given to an Austrian government lending agency, financed the zither industry expansion.
Undoubtedly, more zithers is just what Eisenhower needed.
Divisions of men armed with zithers must be an ideal solution of Ike's problem of how to stop Russian armor.
Such blatant boasting of squandering American taxes, many believe, can only come from unbalanced minds.
And many a vacationing Congressman, finding constituents questioning his family for tolerating such things, will return to Washington in an ugly mood.
And even though the Marshall Plan is strongly supported by a few huge corporations profiting from the billions of dollars worth of petroleum, machinery, chem-

Ladies' Night, Christmas Theme At Toaster Meet
Ladies' night was observed at the Anaheim Toastmasters club last night with a Christmas party which carried a Yulotide theme throughout the program.
The invocation by Melvin Mungerson was followed by singing "Silent Night" under the direction of Songmaster Marion Pickel with Miss Katherine Steward as accompanist, after which the members and guests were introduced.
Renta Vaila
R. H. Allen, in the costumed role of Santa Claus, distributed the gifts brought by the various members and guests, while the group sang "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Louis Taylor, Topic Master of the evening, then invited each person to give a story of his gift which was accompanied by no little merriment.
Lewis Boys spoke on "The Spirit of the Thing" in describing the typical male problem of buying presents for the ladies and Walter Knott gave a graphic description of "An Old Time Christmas." The speakers were introduced by Guy Tester, who was Toastmaster of the meeting.
The tables were decorated with holly leaves and red-berried sprays, and accentuated by tall red candles in rustic bark candle holders. The speakers' lectern was highlighted by a tall red candle with a natural bark background.
Holiday Service Offered at PO
The Post Office will be open at the Parcel Post and Stamps windows on Saturday afternoons Dec. 15 and 22.
Christmas cards take the same rate as last year—2c unsealed. The cards can be signed with appropriate holiday greetings on them. However if messages containing news are written on the cards they become first class, can be sealed, will be given directory service and will be returned to the sender if undeliverable where the return address is given. The cards sent unseeded at the 2c rate do not receive directory service so please give as complete address for them as you know.
There has been of recent years a very noticeable tendency to mail packages early. This is a great help to the Post Office in avoiding congestion in the terminals and elsewhere and it is hoped that Anaheim patrons will mail their packages early too.
WASHINGTON TRIP
Mrs. E. Gilson, mother of Mrs. Al Cotler, has returned to Anaheim following a trip to Washington, D.C., where she visited her son, Russell, and his family, and had the pleasure of seeing a new granddaughter for the first time. She was away seven weeks and made the trip by plane.
