Troubled Over Children's Gifts? Here Are Hints By JOAN S. WHITE You wouldn't give a pony to a child who lives in an apartment, but some of the gifts that youngsters receive at Christmas time, from well meaning friends and relatives, are just about as appropriate. The whole point is to make a selection that will make the particular child on your list happy. What are his interests, his likes and dislikes? What appealed to him most last yeah? Naturally he is now a whole year older and his interests may have changed. Spend a little time with the child to size him up, but if this is not feasible, ask his parents. Heavens knows, he has kept them well informed of his wishes in the toy line for weeks. Still stumped? Perhaps the following suggestions compiled by the American Toy Institute according to the child's age level will help. Infancy to Two Years Babies go for bright color, be it blocks, beads, or bath tub toys. Cuddly animals, soft dolls and rubber balls are good. When he starts to walk, he is partial to push and pull toys, toys for the sandpile, a rocking chair or horse, some type of toy for pounding and something that makes a noise. Playthings for this age should be washable, unbreakable and too playing doctor or nurse is a favorite pastime. Six to Eight Years Hobbies come into the picture and it may be that the youngster has started a collection of some sort or leans to a particular handicraft. Boys go for carpentry, electric trains, model building materials. Girls prefer sewing kits, weaving materials and dolls. Games that parallel school work put new knowledge of spelling, arithmetic and geography to work. In General Many of these toys carry over from one age to the next, simply increasing the complexity. A good toy is designed to teach a child something he is capable of learning and is one that will last well after Christmas. Do not buy poorly made objects that may break or splinter, and rule out poisonous paint, sharp edges and highly inflammable costumes. County Pasture Law Due for Possible Change Prospective amendment of the county zoning ordinance, to permit ranchers to pasture cattle on permanent pasture lands without objection. (Pub. Anaheim Gazette, Nov. 29 and Dec. 6, 1951.) RESOLUTION NO. 197 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLACENTIA GIVING NOTICE OF THE PROPOSAL TO ANNEX UNINHABITED TERRITORY TO THE CITY TO BE KNOWN AS THE "SUNSET VILLAGE TRACT" AND SETTING TIME AND PLACE FOR OBJECTIONS THERETO The City Council of the City of Placentia does resolve as follows: THAT WHEREAS, there has been dirt with the City Clerk of the City of Placentia and that it inhabited territory to the City of certain uninhabited territory hereafter described, and it appearing from said petition that it is signed by more than one-fourth of the owners of the area of land in such territory proposed to be annexed and representing more than one-fourth of the assessed value of such territory; and WHEREAS, it further appears that said property is contiguous to the City of Placentia and that it inhabited within the meaning of the law, and it further appearing that the proposal for the annexation has been approved by the County Boundary Commission. That the property heretofore referred to which it is proposed to annex in the County of Orange, State of California, and more particularly described in Exhibit 14, attached hereto and made a part thereof. That said property shall be designated as the "SUNSET VILLAGE TRACT." NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED That notice is hereby given that December 27th, 1951, at the hour of 7:30 o'clock P.M., of said day, in the Council Room Chambers of the City Hall of Placentia, California, is hereby designated as the time and place that any parent owing real property within such territory, to be annexed and having objection to the proposed annexation, may appear before the City Council and show cause; if any they have, why such territory shall not be so annexed to the City of Placentia. I. DON B. HAIBER, City Clerk of the City of Placentia, do hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was introduced by special meeting of the City Council of the City of Placentia, held on the 27th day of November, 1951, by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen: Dunham, Hannah, Jones, Tyneus, Wilson. Playthings for this age should be washable, unbreakable, and too big to be swallowed. Two to Four Years He is as active as a jumping jack and so is delighted with toys which involve exercise. Now is the time for a low slide, a tricycle, doll carriage, and sizeable animals on wheels. His creative instinct is cropping up and this is satisfied by crayons, chalk and clay, peg boards and pounding sets, and simple musical instruments. He begins to feel mighty grown-up and likes to imitate mother and dad with housekeeping equipment, dolls, tea-party sets and the like. He is really very little though, so keep the toys simple and in the range of his familiar surroundings—a good point to keep in mind when choosing picture books. Four to Six Years This is kindergarten age and his interests are sprouting in all directions. Physical activity is a must, so simple gym equipment rates high, as do wagons, tricycles, scooters and jump ropes. The child has discovered the joy of creating and welcomes hammer and nail sets, finger or easel paint, clay and big blocks. Blunt scissors, paper dolls, and puzzles come in here too. Imaginations run rampant and need such props as a playhouse, toy village, trucks and trains. County Pasture Law Due for Possible Change Prospective amendment of the county zoning ordinance, to permit ranchers to pasture cattle on permanent pasture lands without obtaining special permits was seen today as the county supervisors ordered a study of the zoning ordinance regulations on pastures. Edward Faulkner, 9902 Western ave., west of Anaheim, suggested the study, following his recent failure to obtain permit for supplementary feeding of his cattle on his 10-acre pasture. The present ordinance, as interpreted by the supervisors and county planning commission, prohibits supplementary feeding of stock without a permit. While the planning commission approved Faulkner's application for permit, the supervisors turned it down after hearing protests from neighbors. Faulkner not Satisfied Faulkner declined to let the matter rest with denial of his permit. He presented the suggestion for revision of the ordinance to the supervisors yesterday. Interpretation of the ordinance, he said, classifies a rancher as being in commercial livestock feeding business if "even one pound of hay...or a trough of blackstrap molasses or any grains are fed to cattle while being grazed." His suggestion was made in writing. Giving his stock extra feed makes a law-breaker out of a rancher, said Faulkner, who added that he "got a kick in the pants because I did what I thought was right." ANTON W.
