Medical Association Discloses New Substance Not Guilty of Trouble LOS ANGELES (UP)—Tests indicating that a fatty substance long suspected of causing arterial hardening may not be guilty after all were reported today to the American Medical Association. The substance is cholesterol. It is present in animal fats, egg yolk, cream, and many other fatty foods. A three-year study of 211 persons having abnormal amounts of fat in their blood was made by Dr. Rex M. Alvord, of Tooele, Utah. He reported that when they were fed high amounts of fat and cholesterol, the cholesterol and fat content of their blood dropped sharply. When they were fed diets low in cholesterol and fat, the percentage of fat in their blood increased to abnormal proportions. This is exactly opposite what other researchers have been finding. The other researchers have been restricting cholesterol in the diet to lower the blood cholesterol level, because cholesterol is supposed to figure in the makeup of a substance that accumulates on the inside walls of arteries and later hardens to reduce arterial capacity. This reduction of capacity presumably increases blood pressure because more is needed to pump blood through them. Another surprising feature of the tests, Dr. Alvord said, was that although the 211 persons came from families in which 109 individuals had died from arterial disease, only two of them were found to have that kind of blood vessel trouble and only one had high blood pressure. Another puzzling angle was that when nine persons were given choline, the amount of fat in their blood increased. Two of the nine before being given this substance had normal amounts of cholesterol in their blood. Since then their cholesterol level has remained high, Dr. Alvord said. Transport Hits Mountains with No Life Visible ETIWANDA (UP)—A C47 transport crashed and burned last night in the San Gabriel mountains north of here. Today aerial searchers located the wreckage and found no sign of life. A helicopter pilot from the Air Sea Rescue Service at March Air Base, Riverside, radioed to the control tower at Ontario International airport that only charred fragments of the plane remained. Wreckage was located at about 4500 feet elevation on the south slope of Ontario Peak, which rises from Etiwanda canyon. The crash occurred about 7:35 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing 7706 Gents Sign Up for Gambling Tax WASHINGTON (UP)—The government says some 7706 gents customized to more favorable offers offered to pay a "heads win, tails I lose" federal tax. That many, Internal Revenue Commissioner John B. Dunlap, nounced yesterday, have applied for the new $50-a-year professional gambler's stamp. The occupation stamp does not legal gambling—that's the rub, from the gambler's point of view—just puts the gambler in compliance with the stamp tax law. Officials have estimated at least 17,750 persons, probably more, are subject to the gambler's tax. Dunlap said 2300 speeches revenue agents organized in "racket squads" throughout country have been ordered to out and collar the delinquers. The deadline for filing applications was Dec. 1. It's the application that hurts more than the 50 bucks. To the stamp — required whet your place of business is a cash office copied from the films your hat—the gambler has to out a painfully personal form. It requires the gambler's name place of business (even if that's a street corner), and names associates, superiors, and emplies. Commissioner Dunlap said Internal Revenue bureau will try over to local police comp Rates to Europe In Air Cheaper NICE France (UP) — Europe gets $300 closer for the American air tourist next spring. The International Air Transport Association agreed last night on tourist rates for the transatlantic plane trip—$417 round trip in the November-March off-season and $485 the rest of the year. The present first class round trip fare is more than $700. Pan-American Airways announced it would start the new rate service in May, with four round trips a week in new DC-6B's carrying 82 persons. For the cheaper rates, the passengers will get "service without frills." The conference still must decide which services will be retained and which frills will be discarded. Agreement was reached after seven days of controversy. Pan-American had demanded a $405 year-round rate. Other companies announcing they would start cutrate tourservice in May are Trans World Airlines, British Overseas Airways, Air France, Sabena (Belgian), Scandinavian Airlines, and K.L.M. (Dutch). Lili St. Cyr to Perform Free BEVERLY HILLS (UP) — Time was when you could turn up your coat collar, duck into a Main street burlesque house, and watch Lili St. Cyr shuck her clothes for 85 cents. Later, after she moved to a plush night spot on Sunset boulevard, the tab assumed the propor-tion because cholesterol is supposed to figure in the makeup of a substance that accumulates on the inside walls of arteries and later hardens to reduce arterial capacity. This reduction of capacit presumably increases blood pressure because more is needed to pump blood through them. Another surprising feature of the tests, Dr. Alvord said, was that although the 211 persons came from families in which 109 A helicopter pilot from the Air Sea Rescue Service at March Air Basa, Riverside, radioed to the control tower at Ontario International airport that only charred fragments of the plane remained. Wreckage was located at about 4500 feet elevation on the south slope of Ontario Peak, which rises from Etiwanda canyon. The crash occurred about 7:35 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing the flames, but a storm prevented rescuers from reaching the scene, in rugged mountain terrain, during the night. Ontario airport said it was overcast above 4000 feet at the time, and had been raining. Ground crews set out this morning, heading down the mountains from a fire road. The plane was attached to the 1738th Ferry Squadron at Long Beach, and had left Noston Air Base, San Bernardino, shortly before the crash. Aboard, Norton officials said, were two lieutenants as pilot and co-pilot; a captain and two sergeants as passengers. Their names were withheld. Newspaperman on Trial Charged With Defaming LAKE CHARLES, La. (UP) — A newspaperman—one of five who agitated for strict enforcement of gambling laws in this area—goes on trial today charged with defaming 16 public officials and three gamblers during the crusade. Kenneth L. Dixon, managing editor of the Lake Charles American Press, will be the first of the newsmen tried when court opens at 10 a.m. (CST). Dixon, charged on four counts of defamation, will be tried for allegedly defaming District Attorney Griffin T. Hawkins, Assistant District Attorney Melvin Wetherill and the 13 members of the parish police jury (county governing board). The rangy 35-year-old former Associated Press war correspondent allegedly defamed the officials in an editorial and his daily column "Charley Lake Says." Rabbits vs Coneys In Fur Confab at Washington, D.C. WASHINGTON (UP) — A great of furriers told the Federal Tra Commission yesterday that rabbits aren't rabbits. They coneys. Or, more specifically, a rabbit's skin isn't a rabbit skin, specially if it's a foreign rabbit. It's a coney skin. The furri-fetched along three models (mans, not rabbits) to support their point. The argument came up because of a new fur law passed by Congress. Under this law, all furs must be correctly labelled. The FTC is trying to decide what a correct label is. It'll come up with a tentative list forms. And it also has suggestions that, to keep a customer from being confused, no other animal should be named in describing fur. No leopard-like coneys, chinchilla coneys. Furthermore no coneys. The tentative list of furs suggested by the FTC includes rabbits, and Alfred B. Cohen, chairman of the Retail Fur councilthe National Retail Dry Goods association, said it also should include coneys. Coney comes from the LA "cuniculus," Cohen said, and we used extensively in early Europe. Rabbit was a Johnny-completely. "The earliest reference this word was in 1440," Cohen said."when it was spelled 'rabbit'." Lili St. Cyr to Perform Free BEVERLY HILLS (AP) — Time was when you could turn up your coat collar, duck into a Main street burlesque house, and watch Lili St. Cyr shuck her clothes for 65 cents. Later, after she moved to a plush night spot on Sunset boulevard, the tab assumed the proportions of a $20 bill. There was no cover charge, because what could you say was covered? But food and drink come high where the lights and the music are low. Lili's next public performance, however, is going to be free. The jury trying Miss St. Cyr on charges of staging an indecent performance Oct. 29 was informed by her attorney yesterday that she will repeat her show in the courtroom. The idea, he said, would be to prove that when Lili strips to the buff, it isn't rough stuff, it's art. CHP Capt. Henry Meehan to Retire Capt. Henry C. Meehan, of the California Highway Patrol, who has directed traffic law enforcement in Orange county for 25 years, will retire next Jan. 2, having then reached the compulsory retirement age of 65. Capt. Meehan, who was reared in Orange and lives in that city, became a member of what was then the Orange County Highway Patrol in 1835 and was named captain of the squad in 1926. He retained that position when the county squad became part of the California Highway Patrol later. Dixon, charged on four counts of defamation, will be tried for allegedly defaming District Attorney Griffin T. Hawkins, Assistant District Attorney Melvin Wetherill and the 13 members of the parish police jury (county governing board). The rangy 35-year-old former Associated Press war correspondent allegedly defamed the officials in an editorial and his daily column, "Charley Lake Says." City editor James Norton, charged with defaming Sheriff Henry Reid, follows Dixon on trial. Norton's indictment was based on a story he wrote for the Louisville, Ky., Courier-Journal saying the Sheriff's records were never available when American-Press reporters requested to see them. Cinderella Co-ed Wants Old Life Back, Not Money SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California's Cinderella isn't living up to the script at all. Emerging from hiding to fly home to mamma, Martha Morris De Vigier, 16, told reporters: "The money doesn't mean anything to me. It doesn't make you happy. I was very happy before I want my old life back." The money is her demand, in a suit for separate maintenance, for $10,000 a month, $75,000 fees for her attorney, and a share in community property of Roland De Vigier, wealthy Swiss industrialist. Martha's old life was that of a Torrance high school coed. As such, she met De Vigier over a malted milk. They were married within a month, on Nov. 14. Martha's suit added that she still is an unkissed bride—after both civil and church (Not Dame Cathedral in Paris) ceremonies, and a lavish 15-day European honeymoon. Her charge mental cruelty. She showed up at the airport for her flight to Torrance, a Los Angeles suburb, in what society writers might call contrasting tire: Her 4½ carat diamond engagement ring and diamond studded ring . . . and slacks, turtle neck sweater and leather jacket.
