ABSENT: Councilmen: None. ATTEST: DON B. HAIBER, CALIFORNIANA—San Jose de Guadalupe was the first city (or pueblo) to be established in California. It was founded Nov. 29, 1777 under the supervision of Jose Joaquin Moraga, who with four other colonists had come with Juan Banilla de Anza. HOMETOWN QUIZ—You'd undoubtedly know her if we'd mention her name. She was the promising young lady who received reams of publicity a few years ago when her mother boomed her for a career in show business. In high school she was just another gangly-legged kid. She played the violin in the school orchestra, but she had a flare for dramatics. It was only natural that she should try out for parts in school plays; but she never got to play the leads. She did bits—walkons. But, that didn't discourage her. She was going to be an actress. Her mother, quite naturally, thought she was talented and that a conspiracy had kept her braces on her teeth; dyed her hair and had plastic surgery "correct" the curvature of her nose. "That kid's got guts," her brother once said. "She's really going through a lotta hell to improve her looks. That a woman for you. They'll do anything for a career." BREAKS — Her well-known, well-to-do uncle introduced her to the right people. When told that show business wasn't an easy undertaking she expressed her willingness to make sacrifices. "You've gotta starve a little for a career in pictures," one top-flight producer's brother-in-law told her as he told her how some extras existed on dog food to keep body and soul together until they got that big chance. She wasn't discouraged at all. Her father hired dramatic coaches, voice coaches, and singing teachers. Nothing should stand in daughter's way to a career. OPPORTUNITY — One of her uncle's producer friends felt obligated to return a favor and so gave her a screen test. Ironically enough they liked it when they saw it. "Give her the works. Make a personality out of her," a studio executive whose name is a household word ordered. She posed for millions of cheese cake photos. Was seen with the right people in the right places. Studio publicity men plugged her and planted her name in gossip columns. Mrs. Lillian Funeral Friend Funeral services on Carver who died Tu-age of 76 years will morrow at 2 with them. T.
