HOMES ON THE WAY to local Thanksgiving Day dinner tables are the turkeys shown above in the slaughter house of the Parks turkey ranch. Parks is a popular place this week because it is literally surrounded by turkeys, all choice, broad-breasted bronze birds who strut majestically, or leisurely preen their feathers oblivious to the fact that the chopping block and roasting pan are for them but a day or two away. Some 5800 birds, plump and sleek at the peak of perfection, glance curiously through the high wire fence at the steady stream of visitors who hurry down the well-worn path to place orders for the piece de resistance of Thanksgiving dinner. The noble fowls with the bright red heads and purplish wattles emit throaty "gobble, gobble, gobble" in unison when startled by a moving object that comes too close, but otherwise seem unperturbed by impending doom. Turkey Talk G. L. Parks, who turned to the turkey business from carpentry back in 1902, has never fathomed the secret that causes his turkey flock to call in a chorus or not at all, but he has come to understand the ways to make them grow. "The these broad-breasted birds bear almost no resemblance to the rangy variety we started with back in '32," says he. "The these are bred to be much more compact and meaty. It used to take a good nine months to raise a prime bird for the table, but now-a-days, because of a scientifically balanced turkey ration, it requires only about six and a half months." At this season, most of the Parks turkeys weigh between 12 and 30 pounds when dressed, and are sold eviscerated and oven-ready. The compact, spotlessly clean little building which serves as slaughter house, dressing room, and market (each completely separate from the other), is but a hop and a skip from Mrs. Parks' kitchen door, and she divides her time between home-making and serving the customers. From the cook's point of view, Mrs.-Parks says that few people know how to choose a good bird. "One sure way of getting a good one is to have confidence in the place where you buy and leave it to the seller to select a bird to suit your needs," says she. For the small family, Mrs. Parks recommends a half turkey which can be roasted and stuffed even as a whole bird. Turkey fryers weigh between five and seven pounds and are proving popular. They are in season in early summer and are available quick frozen the year round. Cheaper Than Beef How much space does it take to raise turkeys? The Parks have ten acres at-8731 S. Grand ave., just down the road from Knott's Berry Place. Their house and market occupy but a small portion and the turkeys take up the rest. As California weather is practically perfect for turkey raising, the birds need very little protection from the elements. A wire fence keeps the turkeys in, and a big Doberman Pincer dog keeps prowlers out. There are various diseases that a turkey is subject to, but contrary to popular belief, wet feet does not contribute to them. The diseases seem to cycles without much rhyme reason. Last year was a bit but this one has been very An enclosed chute at the runs directly from the yards into the slaughter and the protesting turkey marched up the ramp one. They are killed quickly and lessly, their feathers remembr machinery and the last of feathers by hand. A full 15 will work from now Thanksgiving to prepare turbirds for the table. The turkey business uses strictly seasonal, but today and more people are turning turkey as an economical man the year round. Pound for its meat is higher in protein steak, and as the price of advances, the scientifically turkey makes a satisfactory stitute. NASHVILLE (U)—Sen. It used to be that houses were designed and built to accommodate the normally large family; that provision was made for horse and carriage. Today, the garage replaces the stable; small houses have taken place of the many-roomed house. Further, as our mode of life becomes "mechanized" we arrange for a compact kitchen, where meals may be speedily cooked, and quickly served in a nearby dinette instead of a large dining room. Considering a house as the living quarters for members of at least two different generations (parents and children) does the modern house in fact provide for the varied and sometimes conflicting needs and uses of two different generations? We think not. We believe that while children are of nursery room age, a single room replete with baby crib and other tiny tot furniture is sufficient for the younger generation. But when the child or children grow through the toddler age and attain school age, then the needs of the modern house are not in agreement with the home of today. School-age children have definite need for space within the home to do more than just eat, sleep and bathe. They must live too. Children's recreation should be enjoyed by them without the appearance of being a concession from the parents. The parents too, on the other hand, should be able to enjoy the home. We believe that the trend "back to the home" is evolving now; that in recent years the trend was away from the home, caused particularly by the "automobile age." But today we are entering the "home enjoyment age"; radio, and television which is bringing into the home a sound enjoyable reason to stay home. Mother and father want to be quiet and read, or they want to listen to different radio programs or television programs than do the children, or the parents want to have some "grown-ups" in for dinner or bridge or cocktails. What just wish to sit quietly and read while they listen to their favorite radio program or watch a good television show. Or, the kids may want to have the gang over for a bit of studying followed by dancing or games; or, the kids may find it ideal as a place to study or read while they listen to their favorite programs, while mother and dad are entertaining guests in the living room. Whatever the purpose, an extra room appears to be the solution for the modern needs of the modern family—the family which again is learning that, truly, there is no place like home. General Returns To New York NEW YORK (UP)—Gen. Douglas MacArthur arrived back at his Waldorf-Astoria hotel suite early today after weather interfered three times with his plane trip from Seattle. He landed at Newark (N. J.), airport at 4:27 a.m. (EST) and came here by auto. A United Airlines plane on which he traveled was prevented by ground fog from landing at La Guardia field. MacArthur told a newsman waiting at the hotel that it was too early in the morning to answer questions on political subjects. BEAT More California beautiful weather we're having! All available manpower was marshalled to bolster the beleaguered city of 40,000 against the oncoming tide. Soldiers, police and citizens worked through the night stacking sand bags to hold back the water. Technical units of British and American Army Forces from Trieste were speeding toward the storm-stricken area. The Italian Air Corps also has joined the struggle. The threat to Rovigo, chief city in the Po Delta, came from the overflowing Bianco canal. It was flooded by the swollen Po river. The Italian airmen were reported planning to bomb the south side of the canal, seeking to divert the flood waters into the many irrigation canals which cut through the area. This would relieve the pressure on Rovigo. (AP) — A young paratrooper, floating to earth after a 90-man drop, grabbed the suspension lines of a deflated chute and saved a buddy's life yesterday. When his parachute collapsed, Pfc. James R. Fernandez of Providence, R.I., plunged head first toward the earth. Frank Elliott, 21-year-old private first class from Coates, N.C., saw his buddy's plight and reached out for the suspension lines in a quick, quiet rescue 500 feet above ground. Both soldiers landed on Elliott's chute. Fernandez, 20, sought to use his auxiliary chute but it failed to open until about 40 feet from the ground. More than 80 mayors from throughout the United States witnessed the spectacular rescue. "There you have it, gentlemen," cried an Army lecturer over a public address system, "the teamwork we teach. That man saved his buddy's life." The mayors were here for an orientation conference. Eat More California Oranges ... beautiful weather we're having! These crisp autumn days are hard to beat!
