Nobel Prize for 1951 Goes to Swedish Writer
STOCKHOLM UP—The Swedish Academy today awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize for literature to one of its own members, Par Lagerkvist, author of the novels "The Dwarf" and "Barababhas."
Lagerkvist, who is 60 years old and a playwright, poet, essayist and writer of short stories as well as a novelist, will receive a check for 167,012 crowns ($32,357) from King Gustav Adolf at the Nobel Prize presentation ceremony to be held in Stockholm on Dec. 10.
The selection of Lagerkvist for this year's literature prize was not unexpected here. He was mentioned among contenders in 1949 and again in 1950, running second to American novelist William Faulkner in the academy's balloting in the latter year.
He is the fourth Swede to win the prize. Previous Swedish winners were Selma Lagerlof, Verber Von Heldenstam and Erick Axel Karifeldt.
In choosing Lagerkvist, the academy, of which he has been a member since 1940, clearly followed the wishes of the donor of the prize, Alfred Nobel. Nobel stipulated that the writing of prize winners should have "an idealistic tendency."
Although Lagerkvist has written more than 30 books since he published his first work in 1912, he was little known outside Scandinavia until the appearance of his novel of the renaissance, "The Dwarf," in 1933. It ap-
Mock Atom Bomb Attack on New York City Held
(See Wirephoto Page 1)
NEW YORK—A mock atom bomb attack on New York City last night brought out a 332,000 member civil defense army which battled "destruction" wreaked by make-believe A-missiles and other high explosives.
The 25-hour drill involved defense volunteers, about 175 hospitals, some night school students, fire equipment from the city's boroughs, New Jersey, and suburban Westchester county; squads of ambulances and police cars.
The general public, not in on the exercise, will get its test during a surprise alert scheduled for the week of Nov. 25.
The drill last night was held to determine how many defense workers would respond to an alert and how they would operate in an emergency. After it was over, New York City's defense director, Arthur W. Wallander, said the workers did a "swell job."

Orphans in Home Of Elderly Couple
PONTIAC, Mich — Charles Moss, 73, and his wife, Stella, 68, shouldered the responsibility today of taking care of their 11 orphaned grandchildren.
"I am sure it will work out all right," said Mrs. Moss. "We will have plenty of help from relatives and friends."
The 11 children, sons and daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Moore, were ophaned when their parents were killed in an automobile crash Saturday. Four teen-agers in the second car also were killed.
The elderly grandparents will close their own home in neighboring Royal Oak and move to the nine-room home in nearby Leonard that the Moores obtained just six weeks before their deaths.
"It was the first place we ever had that was big enough for all of us," said Gerald, 15, the oldest child.
The children were placed in care of their maternal grandparents by Probate Judge Arthur E. Moor (no relation) yesterday. He named two uncles, Richard T. Moss and Arthur Mercure, as guardians to watch after financial affairs of the orphans.
A trust fund has been started for them by neighbors and others touched by their plight. It already exceeds $2000.
