For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER I press on toward the goal unto the prize of the high calling of God—Phil 3:14. CALIFORNIANA—In 1934 Gov. Frank Merriam, a conservative Republican, defeated Author Upton Sinclair, "ham and egg" Epic candidate, in the bitterly contested gubernatorial election, Merriam received 1,138,620 votes to Sinclair's 879,547. NEWSEITTES—They say Don Hudson, Fullerton's great back, was injured in the Anahi game. Rumor has it that he was in no condition to play in the all-important game, anyhoq Clare Van Hoorebeke is to be congratulated for the fine way he handled his team. In the heated contest, there were several flareups, and Van Hoorebeke kept his men in tow. Incidentally, Cap Harry Sheue has completed an exhaustive research of Sunset league records. He notes Anaheim has most football champions. He Ship Explodes, Sinks in Cold North Pacific SEATTLE (UP)—A Japanese merchant ship pulled 12 survivors of the ill-fated American freighter George Walton from the storm-swept North Pacific early today and moved on to rescue 22 others riding bobbing lifeboats upwind from their burning and sinking ship. An explosion and fire aboard the freighter late yesterday killed three members of its crew, and drove the others to lifeboats to await rescue by commercial and Coast Guard vessels converging on the disaster scene. The Japanese freighter Kenkon Maru, the first to reach the stricken ship, battled rough water and a strong wind through most of the night to rescue 12 seamen in a lifeboat nearest the Walton. Seven were taken aboard shortly before midnight and the others rescued about four hours later. All were weakened by cold and exposure. Family Night Tonight at Baptist Revival Service The men of Anaheim will be the featured guests tomorrow night at the special meetings being conducted at the First Baptist church, Broadway at Citron, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Harold L. Fickett, pastor of the First Baptist church of Pomona, has a pertinent message for all the laymen. Dr. Fickett is well qualified for this task, having served as a U.S. Naval chaplain and being present at the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Tonight is Family night, and all adults are urged to bring the family. The largest family will be honored. Two nurseries are maintained for the children at all services, with qualified attendants and bassinettes for the babies. The preaching of Dr. Fickett is taken from the Bible, and he has a marvelous gift in interpreting the Scriptures to our everyday lives. The Bible is the only secure foundation in this time of individual and world upheaval. The meetings are characterized by congregational singing led by Mr. Vere Railey, a noted song leader and harpist soloist. INJURED IN THE ANAHEM GAME. RUMOR HAS IT THAT HE WAS IN NO CONDITION TO PLAY IN THE ALL-IMPORTANT GAME, ARRYHOO... CHUR VAN HOOREBEKE IS TO BE CONGRATULATED FOR THE FINE WAY HE HANDLED HIS TEAM. IN THE HEATED CONTEST, THERE WERE SEVERAL FLAREUPS, AND VAN HOOREBEKE KEPT HIS MEN IN TOW... Incidentally, CAP HARRY SHEUE has completed an exhaustive research of Sunset league records. He notes Anaheim has most football champions. He figures Huntington Beach has most all-sport, all-class (A, B and C) championships — 36:5/6; Anaheim has 29; Newport 19; Fullerton 18/12. Since Santa Ana, Fullerton and several other teams were not members of the alignment for the full 14 years of its existence, the statistics are non-conclusive. But they’re interesting. PEOPLE — Police Chief Mark Stephenson was a CPO small arms instructor during the war. They were stationed next door to the Mexican border. With Kenny Foster, the sand-and gravel man, in the same outfit, Mark had some interesting experiences. Nuff said... Aaron Peraldin is currently leading the Sunset league touchdown parade with 24 points... Brea-Olinda’s Joe Gudmunsson, the red-headed Icelander, is second to Justin’s Don Carter in the Orange league touchdown parade. He made 20 points to Carter’s 31. Gudmunsson’s father is a minister... Robert Barnes, Santa Ana attorney who was reared in Anaheim, will direct Orange county GOP politics. He is the son of the late H. E. W. (Doe) Barnes, an Anaheim civic leader... Roy Rosedale of Yorba Linda will attend the National 4-H congress in Chicago. His brother, Don Rosedale, won a similar honor last year... Walker Merrifield, the trucker, makes a mighty good master of ceremonies. PROGNOSTICATOR — Orange county Valencia orange growers didn’t fare too well on their 1950 crop, but they made money for other people a county grand jury agricultural committee report showed. That isn’t news. Gazette publisher Ted Kuehl has been shouting that from the housetop. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE OF FARM BUREAU BRINGS IN 4000 Membership workers of the Orange County Farm Bureau culminated a special campaign for new members with a complimentary "Chicken and Bean" dinner, at Violett hall in Garden Grove last Friday evening. Top producers were treated to chicken, while the losers ate beans in various forms. Consolation to the losers was expressed in the form of pie in mode. There were more than 150 present. The dinner was planned by the membership department of the county. Farm Bureau, of which Kenneth Casper, Yorba Linda farmer, is chairman. It was arranged and executed largely by Russell L. Hepler, assistant secretary of the Farm Bureau. The group participated recently in a statewide Builders’ day, during which there were estimated to have been over 2000 workers on membership in the field on Oct. 17 and about 4000 new members brought into the organization. Lewis Wicker, manager of the Cal-Farm Insurance Companies, a subsidiary of the Farm Bureau, and a resident of Berkeley, introduced the speaker of the evening, Larry Williams. Williams is president of the Sunland Life Insurance programs of the Farm Bureau in the middle west. He spoke on the subject of “Back to Fundamentals” interspersing his speech with the humor which has made him one of the outstanding speakers of the farm field. Kenneth Casper presented top awards to A. H. Heinemann, Richard (Bud) Haster and H. E. Balmer in recognition of securing most new members for the short period. Also, special pencil awards were made to 40 other members. It is expected that the “Chicken and Bean” dinner will become an annual affair. Bean caterers started with bean soup, had bean salad, a main dish of lima beans and ham, but a regular dessert; there being nobody who knew how to make bean pie. That isn’t news. Gazette publisher Ted Kuchel has been shouting that from the houseup ... Statistically, however, the report is very interesting as it showed that the consumer paid $7.70 for the average 1950 box of valencias. The retailer got $2.08; the jobber took $1.45; selling and advertising took 21 cents; packing house costs were $1.10, and picking and hauling cost 40 cents. That left the grower with $1.93 with which to operate his grove and show a profit ... The report also showed that six million packed boxes were sold in 1950 bringing $48,200,000 of which the growers got $11,700,000. No wonder the boys at the “kremlin” wince when they read Kuchel’s Colony Quips. Everybody gets something except the producer. ACCIDENT — Digby Davis, a 28-year-old Anaheimmer, must of done some quick maneuvering in Orange t’other day when he swerved his dump truck to avoid a serious accident. As it was, the truck clipped off, two traffic signals, cut down an orange tree and broke a concrete standpipe. Fortunately, no one was injured.
