HOMES IN THE NURSEEX—Most of the plants in Anaheim City park get their start in the greenhouse. Here Park Superintendent Vic Ruedy inspects some fifteen hundred potted Cinerarias and Primroses that will be planted out of doors when cooler weather comes. The Primulas will be spectacular clusters of red flowers for Christmas while the spring blooming Cinerarias give intense color to shade gardens at Earl time.—(Gazette photo by Krelft.) WHITE As fall comes to California, many a home gardener gets discouraged. The landscaping and flower beds, no matter how well tended, have a way of disintegrating from lovely greenery and riotous color to a tangled mass of brown stalks flecked by falling leaves. Too often at this season, there is nothing left in the garden to brighten the yard or to provide interesting decoration for indoors. An Inspiration For the discouraged home gardener, we suggest a stroll through Anaheim's lovely City park which even at this season continues to present an orderly, colorful vista, marked by towering shade trees, well tended lawns, quiet lily pools and formal and informal flower beds. Multiplied man power makes a difference, yes, but these professional gardeners have tricks that the lone home gardener may put to good use. For example, the accent is slowly shifting to perennials and a great deal of fall color comes from perennial shrubbery. The Koelreuteria or "Golden Rain Tree," retains its green leaves and at this season is covered with spectacular seed pods which range in color from pink to deep red. The shrimp bush derives its name from exotic fall foliage. The sweet gum tree, sometimes called "liquid amber," bears beautiful yellow leaves which now are tinged with touches of red. The intense purples and crimson of the Bougainvillea vines will remain until touched with frost, and in protected places, tropical Hibiscus bushes are covered with big pin blossoms. And who is not drawn to the feathery plumes of Pampas grass which wave gently in the breeze beside broad leafed banana trees, or the masses of purple heather bordered by rows of silver grey Dusty Miller. The man who master-minds all is popular park superintendent and horticulturist, Vic Reudy. "Mother Nature can never be carried," says Vic, "so we rely long range planning and planting for ornamental effects." To bear this out, he points to husky plants of winter blooming annuals, such as pansies, snapdragons, calendulas and stock that have just been planted, and to the spring bulb planting that is now underway. Besides mass plantings of 500 pansies and 1000 ranunculus bulbs, daffodils will peep from among the rocks in the rock gardens and Vic is toying with the idea of tulips. His secret of constant color is to have one garden do double duty. Look closely at the Bearded iris garden, dormant now for winter, and you will see Iceland poppies sprouting among them. The debris from summer gardens is cleared away as it is practical, and the beds are paired for a new season. Wet and winter taken care of, remaining empty gardens colder weather so that climate and primroses can be planted. They do not, however, put on the show of color which is seen in colder sections, and disappointment is the reward if they are planted with that purpose foremost. Maples are good deciduous shade trees, providing a clean fresh green in summer and allowing the winter sun to shine through. Most of the maples prefer moist, rich light soil but will grow in quite a variety of soils. They are good lawn and street trees. Pests and diseases are not serious. Acer saccharinum, the White or Silver Maple, is an important timber tree in the East. It is a fast growing, wide spreading tree with slender branches. Leaves are good sized, deeply lobed, and silvery underneath. It is more planted here and seems to be better than the regular maple, acer saccharinum latter is occasionally planted. The Oregon maple, acerophyllum, is a native of oak coast, where it can in moist canyons from Southern California north. It is also large tree, found headway very large three- to five-rich green leaves. It is for planting alone as a stand. Acer negundo, the box is found in eastern North Carolina. A variety is native to yeons. The tree becomes tall, but is rather brushy. The Japanese maple palmatum, is offered in many varieties. It is a small treeing to 20 feet, likes partiLeaves are palmately lobed varieties being finely divided some are highly colored. For Health: Eat Californian Need an Electrician? JOSEPH A.
