Anaheim Gazetteer
by JOHN S. NEUBAUER
... Speak ye truth each one with his neighbor; for we are members one of another—Eph. 4:25.
CALIFORNIANA—A board of United States Army engineers engaged to determine the relative merits of Santa Monica Bay and San Pedro Harbor as a site for the City of Los Angeles, reported in favor of San Pedro, Nov. 1, 1892. This ended a long-drawn-out conflict between Hollis P. Huntington and the Southern Pacific interests who favored Santa Monica, and Stephen M. White, who supported San Pedro. This report was not made public until Jan. 7, 1893. Construction on the San Pedro breakwater was not begun until April 28, 1899 and was completed in 1910.
NOTES—The Associated Riding Clubs of Orange county are to be congratulated for their humanitarian effort to help those less fortunate—the crippled children of Casa Caloma. They tell me more than $3500 was turned over to the institution from last week's
San Pedro breakwater was not begun until April 28, 1899 and was completed in 1910.
NOTES—The Associated Riding Clubs of Orange county are to be congratulated for their humanitarian effort to help those less fortunate—the crippled children of Casa Caloma. They tell me more than $3500 was turned over to the institution from last week's El Rodeo hoss show. It was a mighty nice gesture. The Ol' Gazetteer wishes to say: "bravo" to each and every one who had a hand in the shindig. It was for a worthy cause. And what's more—it was the best hoss show ever staged in the county!
OBSERVATION—Menalke Tex Middleton, the Anaheim automagnate, work hard, but they have never coased to play equally hard. Tex isn't a youngster by any means, but he can hold his own with most of them on the tennis court. That's something to be mighty proud of. Eew men can play a game of tennis at 40.
PEOPLE — Tom Donovan's hanging up his splkes 'til spring. It seems that Anaheim's foremost softballer wishes to concentrate on his golf game... They tell me that Joe Anton doesn't make a good fisherman. Why? "He eats up the hail!" That’s what the man said. ... Jack Salveson is making himself a name as an after dinner speaker in Anaheim. It is only natural. He was John McGraw's last protege. ... Hugh Bridgeford, the meatpacker, recently joined up with the Anaheim Rotarians. ... Rudy Casillas, the Placentian who pitched so well for the Fullerton Junior Legion baseball team, is likely to make baseball history for Wendell Pickens' Orange Coasters come spring.
SCUTTLEBUTT — Lupe Gonzales, they say, will be a four letter man in baseball at Anahi. The lad is good. ... Don Hudson, we are told, has been told that he will be Fullerton's first string catcher this spring. That means that Teddy Sullivan will have to ride the bench. ... It's getting so that there's politic involved
SCUTTLEBUTT — Lupe Gonzales, they say, will be a four letter man in baseball at Anahi. The lad is good. Don Hudson, we are told, has been told that he will be Fullerton's first string catcher this spring. That means that Teddy Sullivan will have to ride the bench. It's getting so that there's politics involved in high school athletics. At least, Mike McGonigle thinks so.
SPORTSCENE — Joe Zeigler was in town for the Hallowe'en pea-rade. The former owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs will join Ken Penner, Cardinal West Coast scout, on a hunting trip to Mayhe-go.
PREDICTION — Anahi football fans who journey to Fullerton t'marra night won't be the least bit disappointed with Clare Van Hoorebeke's team. If Anahi had depth of material, which Fullerton has, there would be no doubt of the score. Dick Spauding's Braves are in for plenty of trouble as it is. The Gazetteer rates Van Hoorebeke as one of the finest coaches in high school ranks. He is the equal of any of Anahi's great coaches—L. O. Culp, George Hobbs and Dick Gigyer.
NITECAPSULE — The tax collector will get your paycheck if you don't watch out.
NEW YORK (P) — A woman ghost-writer is suing "comedian" Milton Berle for $250,000, charging he scrapped a serious novel she wrote for him, out of deference to his former wife.
