Anaheim Gazette MONDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Salvation Army Asks Donation Of Winter Clothes Requests for winter clothing are piling up at the Salvation Army Social Service Center which serves this area, Brigadier Ranson D. Gifford, manager, reported this week. The Salvation Army leader said the Center urgently needs 100,000 garments of all kinds and sizes for men, women and children. In addition to winter clothing, the Center needs discarded furniture, home appliances, radios, bedding, dishes, newspapers, magazines and odds and ends to continue its social rehabilitation program. Reconditioning of castoff articles in the Center's workshops provided 235,000 hours of work therapy, 55,158 wholesome meals, 20,145 warm, comfortable beds and substantial financial aid to many hundreds of needy and handicapped men during the past 12 months, Brigadier Gifford said. "The only possible way in which we can carry on this very practical rehabilitation program is for Anaheim residents to continue giving us their discarded materials regularly," Brigadier Gifford said. He urged local residents to call 4631 to bring a Red Shield truck to home or office. For Health, Eat California Fruit! Both vessels limped into port on their own power. The collision occurred a few miles off the gate at 10:15 am (PST) when the Pope & Talbot Line freighter Pere Marquette, in bound from Los Angeles, and the Tide Water Associated tanker Associated, from Seattle came together at reduced speed. Both ships sustained considerable hull damage. A member of the crew of the Pere Marquette said the vessel struck the Associated on the port side just abaft the bridge. The tanker was losing large quantities of oil from her midships compartments as she docked. The Pere Marquette had a jaggedrip in her starboard bow about two feet above the water line. A Pope & Talbot official said the Pere Marquette would require dry docking for repairs. Tide Water Associated officials withheld comment, but the tanker appeared more seriously damaged of the two ships. The Pere Marquette is a 4,383-mon Liberty ship. When the St. Louis Browns dumped the New York Yankees in both ends of a double header in Yankee Stadium recently it marked the first time the Brownies turned the trick since Sept. 19, 1945.
