CALIFORNIANA—Today is the day the San Juan Capistrano Mission swallows are scheduled to depart for parts unknown. They'll return in the spring. ANAHEIMITEM—Anaheim began to prosper almost from the time George Hansen surveyed the site and started to build irrigation canals in 1857. By December 1859 some of the first Colonists began to arrive to settle their partially cultivated land and to take over the management of the new enterprise. TRANSPORTATION—Although Anaheim was on the San Diego-Los Angeles stage route, transportation was poor at best. It took the best part of a day to make the trip to the county seat—Los Angeles. Anaheimers realized the need of adequate transportation. They produced various commodities. Accountants Host State President At Dinner Confab Orange county public accountants were hosts to their State Society president, Jay Robinson, of San Pedro, and of bankers and representatives of State and Federal agencies at a dinner meeting at Michael Manor in Santa Ana last evening. Guests included O. E. Hanson, Bank of America, Anaheim; L. W. Schauer, First National Bank of Garden Grove; T. H. Mock, Security First National Bank of Santa Ana; R. C. Hiatt and A. R. Baker, State Department of Employment; G. W. List, Federal Social Security Agency; and H. A. Peterson of the Internal Revenue Service. Robinson, who is visiting each chapter in the State, delivered a message on the duties of the public accountant to his client and the opportunity to be an effective assistant in the business world. He also covered the part professional ethics play in the work of the accountant, and how the State headquarters gives guidance in a continual program of education in new developments and standards. Robinson also announced that a three-way agreement between the two accountants' State societies and the federal government would be established. The concern built a wharf and a warehouse at Anaheim Landing. Coastwise freighters made Anaheim Landing a regular port of call between San Diego and San Francisco. Max Neblung was the freight clerk in charge of Anaheim's own port which handled most of the shipping for Los Angeles, San Bernardino—the prosperous Mormon colony—Arizona and Anaheim. NEWPORT—With James Morfadden accidentally falling into the shipping business, Los Angeles interests boomed San Pedro; and various lumber concerns boosted the wharves at Redondo and Santa Monica, Anaheim Landing gradually lost out. The lumber trade coupled with the early California land boom also played a part in by-passing Anaheim's "home port." RAILROAD—With the development of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1873, a new era in Southern California transportation was begun. Railroads gradually took the freight from the water carriers. As part of its agreement to enter Los Angeles County, the Southern, Pacific, was obliged to build 50 miles of branch line in Los Angeles County. Naturally, the railroaders pushed the track toward Anaheim, then the second largest city in the county. The Amerige Brothers established their headquarters in Anaheim while laying the foundation for their city. The Santa Fe and Union Pacific fought the Southern Pacific for rights-of-way. There was all kinds of political maneuvering. The Santa Fe wanted McFadden's Santa Ana Newport Railroad. It had assisted in building it; but the Southern Pacific managed to get it, but the line was never worth what it cost. SANTA FE—When the Santa Fe railroad built its Coast line to San Diego, to replace the inland route to the border city, the cities of Orange County benefited considerably. It provided Anaheim with a second railroad.
