MODERN "COUNTRY KITCHEN"—This big kitchen, done in pale yellow with touches of green and red, has every convenience yet sacrifices nothing for its utility. A special trip to Mexico produced the figured tile which protects the wall at the cooking center while a bright provincial print paper covers the remainder. Because special treatment, the paper is water and grout resistant and resembles chintz. A breakfast separates kitchen from den. All work surfaces are topped with Formica—(Gazette photo Kreldt.)

The time is now to get the old spray gun going for a good FALL CLEAN-UP of your SHRUBBERY and TREES. At this time of year, a thorough SPRAYING with a really good SPRAY will help you to control the FUNGUS DISEASES and PESTS through the winter. While you are at it, give the SNAILS, SLUGS and CUTWORMS some BAIT and save your TENDER PLANTS from their VORACIOUS APPE-TITES. Another PEST that you have to be watchful of is the little GREEN WORM that chews holes in the leaves of the little CINERARIA and other BEDDING PLANTS. See us for the proper material for any of these problems.
There is an array of BLOS-SOMS in our NURSERY right now. I mean the nice CHRY-SANTHEMUMS in gallon containers that are covered with HEADS of BRIGHT COLORS.

English Holly, Ilex aquifolium, is a native to southern and central Europe, western Asia, and China. It is a variable species and many varieties have been selected from the origina. Much of this work has been done in England, hence the common name. It is this species which has become so associated with Christmas. Raising holly for holiday shipment has become quite important in our Pacific Northwest. In California the north coast is about the only area favorable to commercial development of the crop. Elsewhere, as in this area, the plant is a fine, richly colored shrub.
Under proper conditions of climate and soil English holly will grow to a tree of 40 foot height with short spreading branches. However, it is slow, and in general we may consider it a shrub of variable height, depending on how long we want to wait for it to grow and how much we want to spend. In our area it does best in partial shade. Soil should be deep and well drained. If heavy, a good portion of leaf mold or peat moss should be added and worked in deeply before planting.
The regular English holly is dioecious, that is, it has pollen flowers on one plant and berry flowers on another. Because of this it is necessary to plant both kinds to assure berries. When the plants are young it is not always easy to tell which kind is which. There is a variety called Van Tholl which has both kinds of flowers. The leaves of this variety are dull green and spiny only on the upper part.
Now's the Time To Tackle That Ol' Bermuda Grass
Bermuda and other grasses be satisfactorily controlled letting the soil dry out and vating during hot dry weather. The use of soil sterilant cals is also effective, report H. Holland, farm advisor, Agricultural Extension Service using sall sterilants one more them into the root zone of grasses. This can be done thoroughly watering after the ferial has been spread over soil surface. Several soll ants are on the market. O sodium T.C.A: Another man long used is a mixture of and sodium chlorate.
Soil sterilants will destroy roots. Because of this, He suggests persons using the careful not to damage roo nearby trees and shrubs.
Other methods of controlling grasses such as spraying with and fumigating the soil can be used. Some selective killers can be used to crabgrass and annual blue lawns. But (here is no k selective control for Bermuda grass.

Allreds Move into Magazine-Inspired, Modern - Provincial, Ranch - Type Home
On Monday, the Lenzi M. Allreds moved into their new home at 9052 Magnolia ave., a 1400 square foot, three-bedroom-home that brings together modern and provincial ranch-styleOrnamentally good taste.
Moving day was the culmination of six months of strenuous work. Allred, district representative of the Hillyard Sales Company, built the house himself, following the basic plan of the "Forecast House" recently featured in the American Home magazine.
He was attracted to the magazine version because it was designed by the well-known architect, James Duncan, who worked with decorator Marian Heuer, so that the modern suburban family’s trend toward informal living could be reflected in coordination between architecture and decoration.
County Building Slow for Past Week

There were no permits issued in the Anahaim area nearer than Katella district, which had a $20,-000 permit for a residence at 12781 Orangewood ave., issued to S. C. Anderson.
Orange had $2098 in miscellaneous permits, including a $1408 poultry processing building for Clarence Kroll at 9392 Batavia st. Permit for a $7101 residence was issued to Walter E. Meier at 16541 E. Heim ave., Olive.
Costa Mesa led the unincorporated communities for the second time.

Besides creating a house that is utterly charming both inside and out, the know-how of these experts produced a house that seems much larger than it really is. The living areas have been kept at a maximum and sleeping areas and halls cut to a minimum during this high cost building era when cubic space must be cut somewhere.
Allred made some changes in the basic plan to suit the particular needs of his family of four, and chose only the best of modern building materials. Dry-wall construction eliminated the need for plaster and will never show cracks. Cork tile floors in bedrooms and balls are warm, resilient and attractive. He is well satisfied with the steel sash used at all windows, a network of flush ceiling lights throughout the house, and a forced air furnace that can be converted into an air conditioning unit.
Space Saving Tricks
The over-all measurement of the combination living room and den is 16 x 35 feet. The den or dining space adjoining the kitchen can be partially closed off from the living room proper by an effective and practical room divider of lowered panels hinged to fold back against the wall. These also swing the other way to close off the kitchen completely.
A flagstone fireplace, fourteen feet long and eight feet high, is angled to give the room a still larger look as it slants from the den to a small entry hall. This entry way is set apart by a stone planter which is egg-created to the ceiling in a manner that lends a distinctive decorative touch to the big main room.
The only unbroken straight wall in the living room is the strictly painted a rich Monterey style. The remaining walls of the area of maple-stained knot paneling.Color Accent
In a small house, it is so of a problem to arrive at a nated scheme for three bays and the accompanying handout losing the individuality.
Taking her cue from de Marian Heuer, Mrs. Allred variations of the same design throughout the house carries the eye easily frost to room and ties the wicket. The master bedroom painted a deep Berkshire ridge popular new rubberized paint.Since its entrance is through the entrance of the living room, its woodwoven responds with that rooftop quaint hand-made chinatrapea at big plate glass windowthe blend of provincedmodern.A roomy ceilings make use of this space made by the angle place wall.

CHILD SALE LEGAL
VLENNA OP—An Austrian mother may sell her child without risking prosecution by the authorities.
This loop-hole in the country's laws was revealed recently, when a mother in Vienna attempted to sell her 11-year-old son to a childless couple for $192.
The deal was frustrated when the youngster got wind of the transaction and reported it to an older friend who in turn told police.
The mother was summoned to police headquarters, but the officers searched in vain for a pertinent clause in the Austrian penal code. The woman was set free while the child was entrusted to reliable foster parents.

In a small house, it is something of a problem to arrive at a coordinated scheme for three bedrooms and the accompanying hall without losing the individuality of each. Taking her cue from decorator Marian Heuer, Mrs. Allred used variations of the same deep color zones throughout the house. This carries the eye easily from room to room and ties the whole together. The master bedroom is painted a deep Berkshire green in the popular new rubberized base paint. Since its entrance is directly through the entrance hall in the living room, its woodwork corresponds with that room, and paint hand-made chinz drawrape at big plate glass windows echo the blend of provincial and modern. A roomy cedar-lined closet makes use of the waste space made by the angled fireplace wall.
Monterey brown is repeated again in a typical boy's room while daughter's room employs touches of green to mist grey.
Chartreuse subtly appears in antique bathroom cabinets and the soffited ceiling over the bath tub. Black introduced as the background color in the wallpaper leaves this room great flair.
