Santa Ana Dons Host Mounties Tonight in Bowl Tagged as underdogs for the first time in many seasons, Santa Ana College's Dons will meet the Mt. San Antonio Mounties at the Municipal Bowl tonight. The Dons will be out to gain their first conference victory after losing a close decision 8-6 in the closing minutes of last week's opener against Riverside. Crippled by injuries to several key players, Coach Bill Cook's squad was not quite up to fighting strength. The return to the lineup of halfback Floyd Strain and lineman Denny Sampson may be of valuable help to the Dons against Mt. SAC. Coaches Arehle Nesbit and Johnny Arranibide of Mt. San Antonio will rely on All-Conference full-back Dick Fouts and halftack Norman Nygaard to carry the Mountainer's attack behind the line play of Bob Newton, Ronald Greei, and end Orlin Allen. Still on the Dons doubtful list are injured lineman Sam Palmer and Wayne Schnakenberg who both missed last week's game. Jerry Dickenson also is on the casualty list and may not see action tonight. Coach Cook was impressed with the running of fullback Bob Griffith and the line-play of Jim Matsunaga along with the regular standout performers Marvin Kravitz, Leroy Elsenbraun and Chuck Sitton. Loyd Kirby, filling in for the injured Strain made a good showing and is slated to see plenty of action in the Don backfield along with regulars Bob Shiffli and Bob Umpress. Gridders Open Loop Saturday in Santa Ana, For almost one year the Saints from Santa Ana have ing and raving as to how they were going to make them tomorrow night in the Santa Ana Bowl where the meet in the Sunset League opener of the 1951 season. Last year on the field surrounded with palm trees, Gold clad team sprinted up and down the field with no regard for the reelections of the Santa Ana Saints and to a man, or rather a player, they vowed they would make Anaheim feel small if it took all year. They tried hard in all other sports to humble the locals, but considering all the competition between the two schools came out just about even in the different sports and so the battle of the mobsters returns to the football field. Tough Luck Coach Bill Cole has had tough luck with his team this season, but he still insists that if the Saints beat one team in a bad way, next to Fullerton, it will be Anaheim. The Saints run from a single-wing formation with Dick Bennett doing all the damage to opposing linemen. He is very speedy and one who likes to get into the open and run. And combined in the Southland this tice season and that counts for their win. The general concern is that Fullerton top teams with Santa second what with th ing Excelsior, Long B Chaffey and Mont closest they came to game was in the E counter where they lo Six Man Line On defense they use line with only two for the most part, th fense they used again last season, but this change at almost any upon occasions does. Both teams will be out to gain their win in Conference play as Mr. San Antonio dropped their game to Orange Coast last week. The two teams are evenly matched with both sides showing signs of becoming stronger as the season progressing. For Health, Bat California Fruit! HURRY! Old Home Week For Ell Peralta it will probably seem like old home week since he attendd Santa Ana last year and was counted on to lead the Saints to a good and healthy season. Over in Santa Ana they don't like that one bit and will be going all out to show the Senior Peralta the advantages of going to Santa Ana. Ell however, who is having a great season with Anaheim will be trying very hard to show the home folks how much they needed him. Johnny Steinborn has never liked anyone from Santa Ana and the same goes for rough and tough Dan Berg who wants to rack up the Saints just as bad as they do against Fullerton and when one mentions Fullerton on the local high school they should be in a low-flying jet or else they might not be around. It should be a hard fought game. Colonist Cee Team in 27-7 RoutOf Santa Ana Yesterday Afternoon Erupting for 27 points in the second quarter, the football team rolled to a smooth over-whelming 27-7 victory on the losers field yesterday afternoon before bleacher section. It was truly a team victory from the first whistle and although the Saints didn't score until the fifth nevertheless started out in high-spirited form and low were really going to prove a tough nut to crack. As a result of the Colonist victory, Coach Dick Glover's team was realting in hole first place in the league standings as a result of a 12-12 tie between Orange and Newport and the final that Fullerton and Huntington didn't play, but play today at Huntington. In the Orange-Newport contest, the Sailors scored first in the first quarter then didn't cross the goal until the final period while the Panthers punched across two tallies in the second quarter with neither team being able to convert. Races 26 Yields Santa Ana kicked off to the local and Weaver took the ball on his own 15-yard line and cleared up to his own 41 for a return of 26 yards and a first on the 41-yard line. However, the locals didn't go anywhere except on defense as right halfback Mickey Glover tumbled in going over right tackle for a Santa Ana recovery and a first down on the Colonists' 41-yard line. In eight plays that took the game into the second quarter, the home team moved the ball down to the locals' 14-yard line where the line stiffened and held and even pushed the Saints back to take over on their own 20-yard line. Leaped on the free helm recovery and the Sailors 38-yard. Weaver made left tackle then a zalea pitchout area and made four yards then humbled. Teaming up with Torres at the other tackle is Bill Dobbs who also weighs in at 200. The linemen are considered rough and ones who would just as soon pile on some hapless Colonist who happens to be carrying the ball and pound his poor body into the turf, as look at him and from the reports are, they don't like to look at anyone from Anaheim, especially from the Anaheim. Table Tennis Enthusiasts Enjoy Game Four Anaheim table tennis enthusiasts enjoyed a recent evening practice session with members of the Long Beach Table Tennis club who had invited the Anaheim Recreation Department to send a team to the Polytechnic High School gym where six tables were kept busy with a steady round of play. Anaheim players were all high school students who had been active in the summer program of ping pong on the City park tables this year. Representing the local department were Floyd Baker, Dick Hanson, Bob Stoll, and Bob Clemmer. The evening proved to be a profitable one for Anaheim's team as Long Beach has one of the most active and efficient table tennis groups on the Pacific coast, annually having many of their players on the ranking sheets of the Table Tennis Association of California. Anaheim players moved from table to table with challenge matches against the various Long Beach members, who also staged an expert doubles exhibition for the visiting players. Local participants have been placed on the mailing list when entry blanks are sent out for Long Beach tournaments of different types which how much they needed him. It should be a hard fought game with plenty of thrills packed in the 48 minutes of play. No matter how the locals came out with Santa Ana, they certainly can't let up because they have two more top games, Huntington Beach next week and Fullerton the following week. Gouyad carried over right tackle for four yards, then little Lupe Gonzales sprinted off his own left tackle and raced 19 yards for a first on the locals' 43-yard line. Weaver carried over his own left guard for one and a pitchout from quarterback Paul Grover to Gonzales made four after a penalty had occurred to make it third down. Grover then pitched a perfect strike to end Ronnie Sabe for a 25-yard gain and a first 68 Santa Ana's 39-yard line. Gouyad then stepped off left tackle and legged it 39 yards to score the first six points of the game. Grover attempted to run the extra point over after looking to pass. It was not good as he didn't make the missed yardage. The locals kicked off and the ball carrier was bobbling the ball when he was hit and Mike Beech. The assurance was given by Chairman Celler (D-NY) of the House Monopoly subcommittee which is studying whether baseball violates anti-trust laws. So, the Saints took over on their own 28-yard line and being able to make only four yards in three plays, they punted out. Tallback Scores The third period was scoreless and in the final period the home team finally climbed up on the score board when their only letterman on the team, Bill Murray, tallback, faced 13 yards down the sideline and after he ran the ball over the goal, the final score stood, 27-7 in a very decisive rout. The Saints had won the game last year by the score, 15-12. In the first half for the locals they fell up 113 yards on the ground while in the second half they made a mere 13 yards. In the first half Grover attempted only two passes, but both were complete for a total of 46 yards. Weaver looked very strong hanging into the line, although he gives the impression that he isn't going anywhere and in no particular hurry, but he always managed to feet off the needed yards. Gonzales tried to go through the middle of the line and came out injured and the fans thought that he should stick to his end runs where he continually steps off large chunks of earth. Grover called a well-organized game and backed by his defensive aces, the linemen, the Colonists are on top of the league and intend to stay there and the way they played yesterday; they are certainly going to make a strong bid for the title.
