Dock Disputes Continue in East and West
NEW YORK (P)—Dock disputes nipped at the nation's vital lifelines today on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
Many of New York City's AFL dock workers appeared out of control of their AFL Union leaders, and no immediate end to the four-day-old walkout was in sight.
In San Francisco, a smoldering labor dispute threatened that key city's waterfront with its biggest battle since the bloody dock strike of 1934.
The West Coast trouble stacked up largely as a struggle between New York's Joseph P. Ryan, president of the AFL International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the West Coast's Harry Bridges, president of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union.
Ryan announced here that he was opening a drive to wrest control of the Pacific Coast stevedores from Bridges, his bitter left-wing rival.
Other disputes also plagued the San Francisco waterfront.
In New York, Ryan said ILA officials could do no more at the moment in their efforts to get insurgent union members back to Tobias Mixed Up With Reds too
WASHINGTON (P)—Senators considering President Truman's slate of nominees to be United Nations delegates shifted attention temporarily from Ambassador Philip C. Jessup to Dr. Channing Tobias of New York.
A Senate foreign relations subcommittee called Tobias to the witness stand for questioning about his background.
Chairman Sparkman (D-Ala.) has said the questioning would deal with records of the House un-American activities committee showing—as Sparkman put it—that Tobias has been a member of organizations cited as communist-front.

New York police doubled the Brooklyn pier guard to 100 men today.
Latest count on the walkout—not sanctioned by the union—showed more than 3000, men idle in the port, 33 ships incapacitated and four other ships diverted to pliers where longshoremen were not on strike.
Ryan has blamed the Brooklyn phase of the walkout on communist agitators seeking to steam up the men in protest against a con-

MONEY SAVERS
When shopping for food, it is a distinct advantage to keep cooking methods in mind. If the oil is used to full advantage or whole meal served from the baker, fuel expenses can be cut considerably as well as time spent in the kitchen.

SAYS CLAUDETTE COLBERT
These are days when danger never sleeps—when only our power keeps our country safe.
That's why I say now, with all my heart—let's not relax! Defending America, and the blessings it gives us, is the most important job we have today!
Three and a half million Americans are doing their part in our armed forces. But defense is our job, too.
And one very important way we can do a defense job is by buying our country's Defense Bonds. For bonds and other forms of saving are a protection for our homes and our families. They back up our military force with solid citizens and a sound economy.
They give America strength—and we all know by now that today peace is only for the strong!
Get in on the "D" Drive. Buy an extra Defense Bond today!
Do something now for peace! Sign up to buy an extra Defense Bond during the great Defense Bond Drive. Then go on buying Bonds regularly through your Payroll Savings Plan or the Bond-A-Month Plan where you bank.
Buy Defense Bonds every month.
Now they earn interest 10 years longer!
Now every Series E Bond you own can automatically go on earning interest every year for 20 years from date of purchase instead of 10 as before! The bond you bought for $18.75 can return you as much as $33.33! Bankers recommend Defense Bonds as one of the safest of investments.

We all have days when we are called upon to whip up a good meal in a hurry. A broiler meal is obviously the answer. Start preparations by preheating the broiler. While it is heating, arrange individual portions of your chosen menu on the broiler rack. Since the meat in this case will cook slowly, we like to coat it lightly with salad oil to prevent its drying out. Whole cold boiled potatoes may be split in half lengthwise, and given a coat of oil or other fat too, to induce even browning. Slice tomatoes in thick slices and sprinkle with bread crumbs or wheat germ and dot with table fat if desired.
Canned whole kernel corn heats nicely in the dripping pan below the broiler rack and is flavored as it catches the juices from the broiling meat. Set the broiling rack well away from the flame and allow ample cooking time according to the thickness of the foods that are being broiled.

Nobel Prize
Winner in '51
Is Theiler
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP)—The 1951 Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded tonight to Dr. Max Theiler of New York for developing the first effective vaccines against yellow fever.
The award recognized the contribution of Dr. Theiler—who has been on the staff of the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation for 21 years—as the most important achievement in 50 years in the fight against one of the great plagues of the world.
The 51-year-old medical scientist has spent half of his time in the past two decades attempting to find the effective weapon against yellow fever, scourge of the tropics and sub-tropics.
It was learned from reliable sources that he had been declared worthy of the Nobel Prize by experts of the awarding body at least three times in recent years.
Nearly 50,000,000 people are estimated to have been inoculated by one of the two vaccines developed for general use by Dr. Theiler. During World War II more than 8,000,000 men of the U.S. armed forces had their shots of his famous "17-D" anti-yellow fever vaccine. France alone has inoculated more than 20,000,000 people in her overseas areas using an earlier type of vaccine develop-

Oil is found, unleased spots in an area might set up the "om" situation which the city Anaheim is trying to avoid. All people and the lawyer stated above state the ideal situation is to have all property in an oil area leased to one or more suitable companies who are digged to strict conformance to oil ordinance. Actually, failure to sign a lease on the part of a property owner not prevent oil drilling in an area since the right to drill is indicated on a percentage (and tition) of acreage leased. (Accling to Section 3608, California State Public Resources Code.) To date oil leases in Anaheim have been obtained by the Steele Petroleum Co. and at least one other company. When asked about the prospect of unleased spots might lure regulators if oil is discovered, a Steele Petroleum official said it could happen. He agreed that the soundest protection was for reliable oil companies who are pledged to respect the wishes of the people of Anaheim, try to get the bulk of the land under lease before oil drilling starts.
The Steele official said: "we just don't mean our company, but we would rather see our toughest competitors come in with leases now to insure that we have a good, clean, unobtrusive oil operation in Anaheim."
(The Gazette agrees—with the folks of Anaheim—that it HAS to be a "good, clean, unobtrusive oil operation in Anaheim.")
RED BUREAUCRACY ENTERS EAST GERMAN BARNYARDS
BERLIN (UP)—Communist-ruled East Germany, (where everybody and virtually everything is pressured to fulfill a state-prescribed production quota) is hailing a sow these days.
She set a record by exceeding the state quota which requires that every sow produce at least 16 piglets in a year. The champ was credited with already having produced 13 litters totalling 114 in breedings so far.
