Problems of Aging Brought to Public At Conference SACRAMENTO — People want to work and be useful citizens delegates to Governor Warren's conference on problems of the aging found, and nobody wants to retire merely because he reaches the age of 60 or 65. There should be some more sensible plan than compulsory retirement at a fixed age, it was recommended at the conference attended for two days by 2000 delegates. It was also recommended that money for old age security should come primarily from one big system of public insurance and that meanwhile state pension grants should be upped from their present $75-a month maximum. (Oldsters now draw social security as well as pensions.) The 22 sections of the conference—each considering a particular problem of old age—handed their recommendations to Warren yesterday. He pledged that each of them will be studied and that the effort to find solutions to the problems of the aging will be made a "major item" in the work of his administration. The conference sections came up with suggested solutions in virtually every field. Employers should be taught to realize the advantages of hiring older workers, said one. Another urged that people be trained at 17 to meet the problems they will face at 70. And a third suggested that television channels should be allocated to educators and used partly for programs on leisure time education for adults.
